Test a deliberate sample of the devices and configurations your app supports—not every phone on the market. Use iOS simulators and Android emulators for fast development checks, then verify device-sensitive and high-impact flows on physical devices. Add a local device lab or managed cloud service when you need broader coverage or parallel test runs.

Build a device matrix around real risks

A device matrix is a planned set of configurations, not a claim that you have tested every possible phone. Start with your app’s support commitments and the devices and conditions your users actually encounter. Choose combinations that exercise the parts of your app most likely to behave differently.

Choose the dimensions that matter

  • Platform and OS: Include iOS and Android versions your product supports, with attention to versions that differ in relevant APIs or behavior.
  • Model, vendor, screen, and density: Include representative devices and screen sizes. Add vendor-specific models when your app relies on vendor behavior or hardware.
  • Orientation and locale: Check supported orientations and languages, including text expansion or layout changes that could affect important screens.
  • Network and app state: Consider offline or unstable connections, permission choices, notifications, background/foreground transitions, and first-install versus upgrade flows.
  • Hardware and OS features: Add only capabilities your app uses, such as the camera, biometrics, location, or other device-dependent functions.

Firebase Test Lab describes a device configuration using model, OS version, orientation, and locale—useful starting dimensions for a matrix, even if you use another testing service. Track which combinations are covered by automated runs, manual sessions, or production monitoring. A short list of flagship phones alone does not establish broad compatibility.

Use a layered testing workflow

1. Run fast local checks during development

Use Android Studio Emulator and the available iOS simulators for quick feedback on launch, navigation, layout, and regressions. Keep a short smoke set covering app launch, authentication or the core entry flow, the primary task, and a representative error or permission path. Local virtual devices make iteration convenient, but a passing emulator run does not prove that the app behaves correctly on physical hardware.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

2. Validate device-dependent behavior on physical phones

Prioritize real devices for high-impact user journeys, release candidates, OS- or hardware-sensitive behavior, and defects tied to a particular configuration. A small team can keep a few representative devices for frequent hands-on checks and use a cloud service for wider sampling. Physical testing can expose issues that do not appear in Android Studio emulators; remote physical-device sessions are also useful for visual checks, install and upgrade sequences, and reproducing handset-specific bugs.

When you file a defect, record the exact model, OS build, app build, account state, locale, network conditions, and reproduction steps. Attach relevant logs and screenshots so another person can repeat the scenario.

3. Automate repeatable critical flows

Automate stable, high-value user journeys and run them across a selected matrix. Use unit and component tests for fast logic feedback, platform-native UI testing when it fits the app, and cross-platform automation when the shared workflow justifies maintaining it. Assertions should check meaningful outcomes rather than incidental layout details or fragile timing.

Google’s Firebase Test Lab documentation describes XCTest/XCUITest and Android test workflows, as well as Robo tests that explore an Android app’s UI without user-authored test code. AWS Device Farm documents Appium, Android instrumentation, XCTest, XCTest UI, and a built-in fuzz test. These are provider-documented capabilities, not independent quality comparisons.

Keep run status, logs, screenshots, video where available, and device/configuration metadata with each result. A failed test is much easier to triage when the exact execution and device are identifiable. Firebase’s Android guide describes summaries that include test-specific screenshots and videos, raw logs, and app failure details.

4. Expand to a local lab, cloud service, or hybrid

A local lab provides direct control and can suit frequent hands-on testing, privacy constraints, or specialized peripherals. It also means buying, updating, charging, maintaining, and sharing devices. A managed cloud can provide remote access and parallel runs without requiring your team to own a large inventory, but device availability, queues, concurrency, service regions, and terms vary. A hybrid approach can keep essential daily devices nearby while reserving broader cloud checks for scheduled runs or release candidates.

Android Studio Emulator and local iOS simulators Local virtual devices for development feedback. Firebase recommends running iOS tests locally before cloud tests and notes that physical-device testing can reveal Android issues absent from the emulator. Fast iteration and early regression checks. Whether the required OS images and hardware, sensor, radio, or OS behavior are represented.
Firebase Test Lab Android and iOS test infrastructure, selected device configurations, test matrices, XCTest/XCUITest, Robo tests, and console or CLI initiation. Teams already using Firebase that need managed runs during the transition period. Google says Firebase Test Lab executions will be supported only until September 30, 2027; plan a migration.
Google Cloud Developer Device Platform Google’s named replacement for Test Lab, with Device Run, Device Streaming API, and a device catalog. Teams planning a move from Test Lab or using Google Cloud-native device orchestration. Billing is required. Google says rates will match Firebase Test Lab through April 30, 2027; pricing changes after that date.
AWS Device Farm Physical Android, iOS, and Fire OS devices; managed automated runs; interactive remote access; documented Appium, Android instrumentation, XCTest, XCTest UI, and fuzz options. AWS-oriented teams seeking parallel runs or interactive remote reproduction. AWS documentation states the service is available only in us-west-2. Confirm current inventory, framework versions, quotas, data handling, and price.
BrowserStack App Live and mobile cloud Vendor documentation describes interactive real-device testing, multi-device sessions, app sources, local testing, and logs; its broader mobile page describes manual and parallel testing. Teams considering a commercial real-device cloud for manual sessions or parallel testing. Verify plan-specific devices, parallel-session limits, features, and current commercial terms. Inventory claims are vendor-published.

Questions to answer before choosing

  • Does the service cover the specific Android and iOS models and OS builds you need?
  • Are the devices real or virtual, and does the distinction matter for your test?
  • Does it support your native or cross-platform framework and the balance of manual and scripted testing you need?
  • What are the concurrency, queue-time, CI integration, and test-artifact arrangements?
  • Can it reach your staging environment or local network, and do its data handling, permissions, and retention meet your requirements?
  • Which region is available, and what is the total cost—including device ownership or subscriptions and concurrency charges?

Plan for the Firebase Test Lab transition

Google says Firebase Test Lab is being deprecated and will support executions until September 30, 2027. Its stated replacement is Google Cloud Developer Device Platform. Google also says billing must be enabled for the replacement platform and that rate matching with Test Lab applies through April 30, 2027. Because these dates and commercial terms affect migration and budgeting, check Google’s current official FAQ before committing to a plan.

If you currently rely on Test Lab, inventory your test types, device configurations, CI triggers, artifacts, and billing assumptions. Then validate the corresponding workflow on the replacement platform before treating a migration as complete. Do not assume that a similar service name or catalog guarantees identical behavior, availability, or cost.

ScreenshotNeo for an app’s web surfaces

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for testing a native iOS or Android app on devices. It can be useful alongside a mobile test matrix when you also need to capture a responsive website, a web-based flow, or a page that an app links to. Its API offers viewport and device presets and screenshot or PDF output; that does not reproduce a native app’s hardware, OS, or in-app webview environment.

Or skip the browser setup

For a web page associated with your app, make one GET request. The ScreenshotNeo documentation has the API details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Keep the matrix useful over time

Review the matrix when supported OS versions, app features, user patterns, or device availability change. Retire configurations that no longer represent a meaningful risk, and add coverage when bugs or product changes reveal a gap. Distinguish what automated tests cover from what still depends on manual checks; the matrix is a record of tested combinations, not a guarantee that every device will behave identically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every pull request run against the full device matrix?

Not necessarily. Keep fast local and automated checks on the development path, then reserve broader or slower device sampling for the cadence your team can sustain, such as scheduled runs or release candidates. Select that cadence according to risk and the cost of delayed feedback.

How should a small team prioritize devices when it has little usage data?

Begin with the platforms, OS versions, screen classes, locales, and hardware features your product explicitly supports. Make the assumptions visible in the matrix, then revise it as support commitments and observed defects change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a screenshot of a page confirm that a native app works on a phone?

No. A page screenshot can help review web content or a responsive site, but it does not validate native app behavior, device hardware, or OS integration. Use the appropriate simulator, emulator, or physical-device test for those checks.
