Watir lets you select a browser when creating a session; Selenium WebDriver then communicates with that browser through its driver. Your practical choices are which browsers and operating systems to cover, and whether their sessions run locally or remotely.
Choose a browser matrix that fits your product
There is no universal browser matrix. Start with the browsers and operating systems your product promises to support, then select targets that exercise meaningful differences in rendering, input, storage, and browser-specific behavior. Selenium’s supported-browser documentation has sections for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari, but that list is not a recommendation to test every browser or to include Internet Explorer in a new project. Selenium notes that each browser has custom capabilities and unique features.
- List the browser and operating-system combinations your users need.
- Decide which core user journeys must pass on every target, such as signing in, submitting a form, or completing checkout.
- Keep specialized checks for browser-specific features separate from shared behavior tests.
- Record whether each target runs locally or remotely, and who maintains its browser and driver environment.
Watir’s guides show browser selection for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and Internet Explorer, but the session guide was last updated March 12, 2021. Verify browser selection and support against the Watir version in your project. Watir Guides
Reuse the test intent and select sessions explicitly
Watir documents Watir::Browser.new for the default browser and examples such as Watir::Browser.new :firefox for selecting a browser. Put browser selection in test configuration or setup, then run the same scenario against each selected target. This keeps assertions about what the user can do separate from the mechanics of starting a particular browser session. Watir: Starting a Session

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Here is a small runnable-style example of the pattern. It assumes the app is available at the configured URL, the Ruby project has Watir installed, and the chosen browser session can be created in the environment. The exact driver setup depends on your installed Watir and Selenium versions.
require "watir"
TARGETS = [:chrome, :firefox, :safari].freeze
APP_URL = "http://localhost:3000"
TARGETS.each do |browser_name|
browser = Watir::Browser.new(browser_name)
begin
browser.goto(APP_URL)
browser.text_field(name: "email").set("person@example.com")
browser.button(type: "submit").click
raise "Expected dashboard heading" unless browser.h1.text == "Dashboard"
ensure
browser.close
end
end
Change the target list to match the browsers your product must support. The example’s selectors and expected heading are illustrative: replace them with elements and outcomes from your own application. Ensure every browser is closed even if an assertion fails, so repeated runs do not leave sessions behind.

Set up a local WebDriver session
A local run requires Ruby and the project’s Watir/Selenium dependencies, the selected browser installed on the machine running the test, and a compatible WebDriver setup. Selenium WebDriver is the control layer: a browser-specific driver relays commands between Selenium and the browser. Selenium’s getting-started documentation and driver installation and troubleshooting guide explain those roles.
- Install your project dependencies. Use the versions declared by your application, then check the current Watir and Selenium documentation for installation and Ruby compatibility.
- Install the browser on the machine that runs the test. A local Watir process cannot start a browser that is absent from that environment.
- Confirm driver management for your installed versions. Watir’s driver guide, last updated March 12, 2021, recommended the
webdriversgem for automatic downloads. Treat that as historical guidance, not a guaranteed current setup recipe; check current Watir/Selenium releases and browser-driver compatibility before adding it. Watir: Drivers - Run one session first. Start a single target before expanding the matrix. This helps distinguish a browser/driver startup problem from an application or assertion failure.
Driver names and installation requirements vary by browser and platform. Watir’s historical driver guide lists ChromeDriver, GeckoDriver, Microsoft WebDriver, IEDriver, and Safari’s preinstalled safaridriver; do not assume that list or its setup instructions reflect current versions. Confirm the current browser-specific instructions for your environment.

Run browsers remotely when the environment calls for it
Watir documents connecting to a browser on another machine by supplying a remote WebDriver URL. In that arrangement, the browser and driver run in the remote environment, while your test connects to its endpoint. The remote environment still needs a valid browser session and compatible configuration. Watir’s session guide
Remote execution can be useful when you need browser installations or operating systems unavailable on a developer workstation, or when a team centralizes browser provisioning. It also changes where you diagnose failures: endpoint availability, remote session capacity, and remote browser configuration become part of the setup. Watir’s driver guide names BrowserStack and Sauce Labs as examples of online browser services, but that reference does not establish their current Watir integration, features, or commercial terms. Handle browser-specific behavior without duplicating the suite
Keep shared tests focused on user-visible behavior, and introduce browser-specific setup only when a target genuinely requires it. Selenium’s documentation describes browser-specific capabilities; Watir’s browser guides also describe options that differ by browser. For example, Watir’s Firefox guide discusses profiles and preferences, while its Safari guide describes an authorization/setup step. Those Watir pages were last updated March 12, 2021, so recheck their examples against current browser and library versions. Selenium Supported Browsers · Watir Firefox guide · Watir Safari guide
- Use shared selectors and assertions when the same outcome is expected everywhere.
- Use browser-specific options for genuine capability or environment differences, not to conceal inconsistent product behavior.
- When a test fails, capture enough context to tell whether the failure came from session setup, browser behavior, or the application.
Troubleshoot failures by layer
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Browser session fails to start | Selected browser name, browser installation, driver availability, and compatibility in the machine where the session runs. | Start with one target and follow the current Watir/Selenium setup guidance for that browser. Selenium’s driver guide explains the driver’s role in sending commands to the browser. |
| Local session works but remote session fails | Remote WebDriver URL, endpoint reachability, and browser/driver provisioning on the remote machine. | Verify the endpoint and remote environment independently of the test assertions. |
| One browser fails while others pass | Browser-specific capabilities, options, profiles, preferences, or authorization requirements. | Compare the target’s setup with current browser-specific documentation; avoid changing shared assertions unless the product behavior differs intentionally. |
| Test fails after navigation or interaction | Whether the page reached the expected state and whether the selector and assertion describe the current application. | Separate application-level failures from startup errors, then adjust the test to wait for or assert the intended user-visible state. |
| Historical instructions do not match installed versions | Age of the guide and the versions of Watir, Selenium, browser, and driver in use. | Prefer current release documentation and compatibility information over old download or gem recommendations. |
For driver-specific installation failures, consult Selenium’s browser-driver troubleshooting documentation. The cause is not always the driver: session configuration, remote connectivity, browser options, or application behavior can also be responsible.

Or skip the browser setup
Watir is for automating browser behavior in tests; for a screenshot of a page, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. For example, using the documented cURL form: ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. Frequently Asked Questions
Does cross-browser testing with Watir require a separate test suite for every browser?
No. Keep the same behavior-oriented scenarios and vary the browser session configuration for each target. Add browser-specific setup only where a browser requires it.
Can Watir run tests on a remote browser?
Yes. Watir documents starting a remote session by providing a remote WebDriver URL; the remote environment must still provide a valid browser session.
