To run Cypress tests in more than one browser, install each target browser in the local or CI environment, then select it with cypress run --browser <browser>. Build the browser matrix around the browsers and versions your application promises to support. Cypress lists Chrome-family browsers, Firefox, and WebKit, but WebKit support is experimental—not a guarantee of equivalent coverage to Safari in every context.
Which browsers does Cypress support?
Cypress’s cross-browser guide says it supports “Chrome-family browsers, Firefox, and WebKit (Safari’s browser engine).” The browser-launch reference lists Chrome for Testing, Chrome, Chrome Beta and Canary, Chromium, Edge and preview channels, Firefox variants, deprecated Electron, and experimental WebKit. See Cypress cross-browser testing and the browser-launch reference for current availability and details.
Version support is not identical across families
Cypress officially supports the latest three major versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. In the browser-launch reference current as of October 3, 2026, Firefox versions earlier than 140 cannot be launched; Cypress 15.0.0 through 15.18.1 used a lower floor of Firefox 135. These details can change with Cypress releases, so verify the reference against the Cypress version you use.
WebKit is experimental
Cypress’s WebKit implementation is an experiment based on Playwright WebKit, and Cypress warns that issues may occur. Documented limitations include no cy.origin() support, incompatibility with Test Replay, and a disabled forceNetworkError option in cy.intercept(). Treat a WebKit run as useful additional coverage, not a drop-in substitute for every Safari test.

Choose a browser matrix that matches your users
There is no universal browser matrix. Start with your application’s stated support policy and the browsers your audience uses; add a browser when it improves confidence in a meaningful user path, not simply to maximize the number of runs. Cypress frames the decision as a balance between confidence, test duration, and infrastructure cost.
- Browser coverage: include the browser families that matter to your supported users and critical workflows.
- Version reproducibility: prefer pinned binaries in CI where practical. Cypress recommends Chrome for Testing because its binaries are versioned and do not auto-update.
- Runtime and CI cost: a matrix that runs every test in every browser can extend feedback time and consume more infrastructure. Consider which suites need the full matrix and which can run in a primary browser.
- Maintenance: browser-specific behavior and experimental support can require additional diagnosis and test adjustments.
For a small project, one stable primary browser plus a scheduled or release-gated run in other supported families may be a practical starting point. For a product whose workflows depend heavily on browser-specific behavior, run the relevant tests in each browser family before release. These are planning approaches, not Cypress-prescribed defaults.
Install and select the browser
The target browser must be installed where Cypress runs—on the developer’s machine or in the CI environment. Cypress detects available browsers; pass the detected browser name to the CLI. For example:

Make CI runs reproducible
- Install the intended browser in the CI image or setup step.
- Use a pinned browser binary where possible; for Chrome, consider Chrome for Testing, whose versioned binaries do not auto-update.
- Run the same Cypress command with an explicit
--browservalue for each matrix job. - Keep the Cypress and browser versions visible in CI logs so failures can be tied to the environment that produced them.
Pinning reduces changes caused by an automatically updated browser, but it does not remove the need to update versions deliberately and confirm that the chosen version remains within Cypress’s supported range.
Account for cross-origin and browser-specific behavior
Tests that navigate between origins need particular care. Browser security rules and Cypress capabilities are not interchangeable across families. Cypress documents that disabling web security is supported only on Chrome-based browsers, so a test that depends on that setting will not transfer unchanged to Firefox or WebKit. Review Cypress’s cross-origin testing guide before building a cross-browser workflow around such tests.

For WebKit specifically, check the documented limitations before making it a required CI gate. A test suite using cy.origin(), Test Replay, or forceNetworkError with cy.intercept() encounters documented constraints in WebKit. Decide whether to adapt or scope those tests, or to keep WebKit as a supplemental run until the needed behavior is supported.
Run the same suite across browsers without hiding failures
A browser matrix is useful only if each run’s result remains attributable to its browser and environment. Keep browser selection explicit, and do not treat a pass in one browser as evidence that the same behavior passed in another. When a test fails in only one family, first compare browser and Cypress versions, then isolate whether the test depends on a browser-specific capability or security setting.

Troubleshooting Cypress browser runs
The requested browser cannot be launched
Confirm that the browser is installed in the environment running Cypress and that the name passed to --browser matches a browser Cypress detects. Check the browser-launch reference for supported names and version constraints; for Firefox, the current reference says versions before 140 cannot be launched, with the noted lower floor applying only to Cypress 15.0.0 through 15.18.1.

The run behaves differently in CI than locally
Compare the installed browser and Cypress versions in both environments. An automatically updated browser can change independently of the local setup; use versioned binaries such as Chrome for Testing where practical, and record the chosen versions in CI output.
A cross-origin test fails in one browser
Check whether the test relies on disabling web security or another browser-family-specific behavior. Cypress documents disabling web security as available only on Chrome-based browsers. See the cross-origin testing guide and adjust the test strategy rather than assuming the configuration works identically everywhere.
WebKit reports unsupported behavior
Check Cypress’s current browser-launch documentation for WebKit’s experimental status and known issues. In particular, the documented limitations include cy.origin(), Test Replay, and forceNetworkError in cy.intercept(). Do not interpret that failure as proof that the corresponding feature works in Safari just because WebKit uses Safari’s engine.

Or skip the browser setup
For capturing a website screenshot rather than running interactive Cypress tests, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for Cypress browser testing: it captures pages as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF rather than executing your Cypress test suite. Its clean-shot flow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
Example request (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
