Cross-browser testing checks whether a website works across the browsers, operating systems, and devices its audience uses. Responsive testing checks whether its layout and content adapt to different viewport sizes and conditions. They are separate goals: a page can reflow well but fail in a particular browser, or work in one browser while overflowing on a narrow screen. Strong coverage combines both.

What cross-browser testing checks

Cross-browser testing compares a site’s rendering and behavior in a chosen set of browsers, platforms, and devices. It looks for issues such as controls that do not work, content that renders incorrectly, or functionality that is inaccessible in a browser your users rely on. The purpose is not necessarily to make every page look pixel-identical everywhere; it is to keep core functionality accessible and usable across the agreed support range. MDN’s cross-browser testing guidance recommends choosing coverage based on your audience rather than attempting every possible combination.

What responsive testing checks

Responsive testing checks how the page responds to changes in viewport size and related conditions. It finds problems such as horizontal overflow, cramped controls, awkward reflow, or content that becomes difficult to use at a particular width. Responsive behavior is commonly built with fluid layouts, CSS media queries and breakpoints, alongside a correctly configured viewport meta tag. MDN’s responsive design guide explains these implementation concepts.

A viewport is the area in which the page is displayed; it is not interchangeable with a browser or device. A browser test at one width does not establish that the page works at every width, and resizing a page in one browser does not establish that it works in other browsers.

How the two testing goals differ

Dimension Cross-browser testing Responsive testing
What varies Browser, operating system, and device combinations selected for the audience Viewport size and conditions such as orientation
Typical failures Browser-specific rendering or functional differences; inaccessible or unusable core behavior Overflow, poor reflow, cramped content, or difficult interactions at some sizes
Coverage plan A manageable matrix based on audience data and the supported-browser policy Representative narrow, intermediate, and wide widths, including important orientations
Useful methods Browser automation and, for priority cases, real browser/device access Viewport resizing, layout inspection, visual checks, and interaction checks

The goals overlap in practice. A responsive layout needs to be checked in the browsers that matter, and browser compatibility checks should include representative viewport sizes. Neither form of testing replaces the other.

How to choose browsers, devices, and viewport sizes

  1. Start with your audience. Use available analytics and user feedback to identify the browsers, operating systems, and devices your visitors actually use.
  2. Set a support policy. Decide which combinations the product promises to support. That policy gives the test matrix a practical boundary; testing every possible combination is not feasible.
  3. Choose representative widths. Include narrow, intermediate, and wide viewports relevant to your layouts. Test orientations where the experience or interaction changes. There is no universal browser list or fixed set of widths that is right for every site.
  4. Prioritize likely failure points. Check navigation, forms, dialogs, menus, media, and other interactions alongside page layout, especially where content changes or controls rearrange.
  5. Test key journeys in target browsers. Verify that users can complete important tasks, not just that the initial page looks acceptable.
  6. Use real devices for high-priority mobile behavior when possible. Emulation expands repeatable coverage, but does not guarantee that every platform-specific behavior matches a physical device.

Using Playwright and real-device testing

Playwright supports browser projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and its device emulation can help exercise layouts and interactions at configured device dimensions. This is useful for repeatable automated checks across selected browser engines and viewports.

There is an important qualification: Playwright’s WebKit build is not branded Safari, and emulation cannot reproduce every platform-specific feature of a real device. Use it to broaden and repeat checks, not as proof that every Safari or physical-device configuration has been tested. For mobile behavior that matters most, try the site on physical devices where possible. MDN also identifies hosted testing services such as BrowserStack and Sauce Labs as options when teams need access to more browser and device configurations; their current pricing and terms vary and are not compared here.

Using screenshots to inspect responsive layouts

Screenshots can help compare page layout at selected viewport sizes and spot visual changes during development. They do not prove that controls work, keyboard access is intact, or a user journey succeeds: pair visual inspection with functional checks in the selected browsers. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server that can capture pages for this kind of visual review; it complements, rather than replaces, browser and device testing.

Or skip the browser setup

Make a screenshot request for a target page; for example, this cURL command saves a WebP capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, cookie and consent banners are accepted and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Screenshots can reveal visual differences, but still need to be paired with functional browser testing.

Common testing mistakes

  • Testing widths in only one browser. That leaves browser-specific rendering and behavior unchecked.
  • Testing browsers at only one width. That can miss responsive failures in otherwise supported browsers.
  • Trying to cover every combination. Instead, select a manageable matrix from audience data and the support policy.
  • Treating a screenshot as a functional test. A static image cannot show whether forms, menus, or keyboard interactions work.
  • Treating emulation as an exact physical-device substitute. Use real devices for high-priority mobile behavior when available.
