Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Effective cross-browser testing starts with your users, not an attempt to test every browser and device combination. Define which environments you support from audience data and application risk, then test key workflows repeatedly with a blend of automation and hands-on checks.
Choose browsers and devices from your support goals
There is no universal browser list that suits every web application. MDN’s guidance is to ensure the site works on the combinations most important to its audience, rather than trying to test every possible combination (MDN, Strategies for carrying out testing).
For an existing application, start with its analytics
Review your own audience data, including browser, operating system, and device class where available. Regional browser-usage statistics can help estimate coverage for a new product, but they are a fallback—not a substitute for your users’ data. Usage differs by geography and audience, so avoid treating a global or regional ranking as your application’s support policy.
Write down what support means
For each environment you intend to support, specify what “works” means in user terms: which important journeys must complete, what usability standard is required, and which limitations are acceptable. MDN describes a tiered approach: fully test common modern environments, provide a simpler but still useful experience in older or less capable ones, and handle rare or unknown environments defensively.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Full support: identify the workflows and quality bar that must hold in your primary environments.
- Fallback support: state how the application should behave when an older browser lacks a newer capability.
- Out of support: decide how unsupported or unknown environments are handled, and communicate any meaningful limitations.
Treat tiers as your policy choices, not as a universal current list of browsers or versions. Revisit them when your audience, product requirements, or browser support changes.
Map application risks to specific tests
A support matrix is useful when it drives test choices. During planning, list the journeys users depend on and the technical features those journeys rely on; then connect each risk to a test or fallback decision.
Prioritize consequential workflows
Include the paths that matter most to the application—for example, signing in, submitting a form, completing a purchase, or viewing a critical dashboard when those actions apply. Verify both the expected result and whether users can complete the flow when an optional feature is unavailable.
Check compatibility for features you use
MDN Browser Compatibility Data documents support information for web APIs, JavaScript, and CSS. Use it to spot potential gaps in an important feature, then validate your own application in the environments you support. Compatibility data identifies risks; it does not prove that your particular implementation works.

For example, MDN’s cross-browser testing guidance highlights newer CSS or JavaScript features and WebGL as areas that may present issues in older or legacy environments. For each relevant feature, decide whether to provide a fallback, offer a simpler but functional experience, or exclude an environment from your support commitment.
Test throughout implementation, not only at release
Build testing into the development cycle: plan coverage, implement a small part, test and discover issues, fix them, and repeat. MDN advises testing each small part before committing further work rather than leaving all checks until the end (MDN, Introduction to cross-browser testing).
- Set the initial coverage. Choose a couple of stable desktop browsers available to the team and identify the key workflow to exercise.
- Test each increment. As features are implemented, run the relevant checks in those browsers and fix issues while the change is still small.
- Include keyboard and screen-reader navigation. Check that important controls and flows are navigable, understandable, and usable without relying only on a mouse or visual layout.
- Add mobile environments early. Test the relevant mobile platforms before the end of the project, then extend coverage to the rest of the target matrix.
- Repeat against the support policy. As the full target list is added, keep testing the workflows and risks that justified each environment’s inclusion.
Early checks help reveal compatibility problems before more implementation depends on the affected behavior. They also make it easier to distinguish a browser-specific problem from a defect introduced by a recent code change.
Combine automation with direct observation
Automation and manual testing answer different questions. Automated end-to-end tests make important actions repeatable; direct observation helps investigate unexpected behavior and assess details a scripted assertion may not capture.

| Method | Useful for | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Automated end-to-end checks | Repeatable user actions such as navigation, form submission, and confirming expected behavior. | Direct inspection of usability, device-specific behavior, and failures that need investigation. |
| Screenshot comparison | Spotting visual or layout differences between environments. | Verifying that a workflow functions correctly or that a page is accessible. |
| Manual browser checks | Investigating failures and observing behavior that is difficult to express as an automated assertion. | Repeatable coverage of every routine journey; automation can help with that. |
| Physical devices | Checking behavior on hardware relevant to your audience. | Broad coverage when the team has limited access to devices. |
| Emulators and virtual machines | Extending environment coverage when maintaining physical hardware is impractical. | All evidence from testing on actual devices. |
| External user testing | Feedback from people outside the development team. | Routine repeatable checks of defined technical requirements. |
No single method, or fixed ratio of methods, is established as right for every team. Choose a mix that covers your audience, workflows, visual and functional risks, accessibility checks, and device-specific behavior.
Use browser automation standards where they fit
The W3C describes WebDriver as a platform- and language-neutral interface for programs to control browsers remotely. WebDriver BiDi adds bidirectional event communication. The W3C Browser Testing and Tools Working Group also connects its work with Web Platform Tests to assess interoperability among browser implementations (W3C Browser Testing and Tools Working Group charter).
These standards and projects support automation and interoperability work. They do not remove the need to test your own application’s workflows in the environments your support policy names.
Match automation coverage to browser behavior
Playwright’s default configuration includes Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects. That gives teams coverage across browser engines, but a bundled engine build is not automatically the same as testing every branded browser or its configuration.

Use the browser channel your risk requires
Playwright documents running branded Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge channels when a test needs behavior tied to those browsers—for example, media codec behavior or enterprise policies. Include those channels when they matter to your users or application, rather than assuming engine coverage answers every branded-browser question.
Keep framework and browser builds current
Playwright recommends keeping Playwright updated so its browser versions stay current and can help catch upcoming browser changes. Establish a routine for updating the framework and its associated browser builds, then investigate failures before treating them as application regressions or dismissing them as tooling changes. See Playwright’s browser documentation.
Use hosted environments when local coverage is impractical
MDN names BrowserStack and Sauce Labs as commercial browser automation applications for teams that need access to more browser and device combinations than they can maintain locally (MDN, Your own testing). The referenced guidance establishes them as relevant services, not their current catalogs, prices, or commercial terms; check those details directly before choosing one.

Capture screenshots for visual checks
Screenshot comparisons can expose layout differences, but a capture alone does not verify that controls work, keyboard navigation is usable, or a flow succeeds. Use screenshots as one part of a test, alongside functional and accessibility checks in the environments that matter.
For screenshot capture as a separate step, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture options include full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, viewport and device presets, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, and PDF output. A URL-based screenshot request is not a replacement for running the application’s interactive tests in each target browser.
Or skip the browser setup
For a standalone capture, one GET request can return an image or PDF. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does testing Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit mean every browser is covered?
No. Those projects provide engine coverage, but branded-browser behavior and browser configuration can still differ. Add a branded channel when a risk such as media codecs or enterprise policy makes it relevant.
How many browser and device combinations should a team test?
There is no universal number or coverage ratio. Set the matrix from your own audience, support commitments, and application risks.
