Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore launch, test the browsers and devices your audience actually uses—not every possible combination. Agree on a documented support matrix, run your most important tasks and accessibility checks against it, and combine automated coverage with checks on real devices where possible. The goal is reliable access and core functionality, not pixel-identical rendering everywhere.
1. Agree on the browsers and devices you support
There is no practical way to test every browser-and-device combination. MDN’s guidance is to focus on combinations important to your audience. Use first-party audience data where available, account for geography and project requirements, and agree on the target list with the site owner. MDN’s introduction to cross-browser testing identifies desktop Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, as well as common iOS and Android phone and tablet browsers, as candidates—not a universal checklist.
Write down the support matrix
For each target, record the browser family and supported version, operating system, device class, and representative viewport or screen size. Include older versions only when audience evidence or a requirement justifies supporting them. Note any browser-specific feature dependencies and known exceptions.
Define what “works” means for each target. Core journeys should remain usable; nonessential effects may be allowed to degrade gracefully. Get the site owner’s agreement on those expectations before testing so a defect and an accepted difference are not confused later.

Choose combinations from evidence, not habit
- Consider the audience’s geography and the platforms used to reach the site.
- Include mobile and desktop configurations relevant to the site’s users; do not assume one phone represents every device in its class.
- Review browser compatibility information for the CSS, JavaScript, and browser APIs the site depends on. MDN’s guidance points to browser-compatibility data for this check.
- Record why each target is included and who approved exclusions or exceptions.
2. Test the site’s essential user journeys
For every configuration in the agreed matrix, run the highest-value tasks from entry to completion. Choose tasks that actually exist on your site: for example, finding key content, submitting a form, using search, or completing a transaction. A brochure site and an online store do not need identical journey lists.
Check the whole interaction
- Start from the page or state a real visitor would use, rather than jumping directly to a final screen.
- Confirm that links, buttons, menus, forms, dialogs, and other controls respond as intended.
- Exercise validation, confirmation, loading, and error states where relevant. Messages should be understandable, and users should have a clear next step.
- Verify that the user can finish the task, not merely that the page loads or looks plausible.
MDN distinguishes visual requirements from functional requirements. A useful test plan covers both: visual inspection cannot prove a task works, and a passing interaction test cannot prove a layout is usable.
3. Inspect responsive layout and visual integrity
Inspect important pages at representative phone, tablet, and desktop sizes from the support matrix. Look for problems that affect reading or interaction as the viewport changes—not just obvious differences from a screenshot.

Check the parts that commonly affect use
- Text remains legible, and important content is not clipped, obscured, or unexpectedly missing.
- Navigation and page structure remain understandable at narrow and wide sizes.
- Forms, dialogs, images, and controls fit the viewport and can be used without awkward workarounds.
- Scrolling, overlays, and responsive changes do not hide the control or information needed to complete a task.
Compare the result with the project’s visual requirements, but do not require every browser to render pixels identically. Platform conventions and browser rendering can differ; prioritize a coherent appearance and usable behavior.

Device emulation is useful for expanding viewport and device-profile coverage efficiently. It does not establish every behavior of a physical phone or tablet. MDN recommends testing on physical devices where possible; use real target hardware for important platform-dependent checks when it is available.
4. Check feature support and fallbacks
List the newer or less universal web features on which the site depends. Check their support in the target browser versions using the relevant MDN browser-compatibility guidance, then verify what happens when a feature is unavailable.

Make nonessential features optional
For each dependency, decide whether it is core or an enhancement. If a nonessential feature is unsupported, the page should still offer a usable fallback or degrade gracefully. If the feature is necessary for a core journey, test that journey directly in every supported configuration rather than relying only on a compatibility table.
Test platform-dependent behavior directly
Media playback and other platform-dependent capabilities can vary by operating system and browser build. Playwright’s documentation specifically notes variation in feature availability, including media codecs. When such a capability matters to the site, test the actual target browser and platform; a generic engine test may not establish the branded browser’s or device’s behavior.
5. Include accessibility in the compatibility pass
Test whether people can use the essential journeys with assistive technology and without a mouse. Agree on the project’s accessibility target and applicable requirements; MDN gives WCAG AA as an example target, not a substitute for determining what applies to your site.

Keyboard checks
- Complete essential tasks using only the keyboard.
- Check that focus moves in a sensible order and remains visible.
- Confirm that menus, dialogs, forms, and other interactive controls can be reached and operated.
- Check that a user can recover from validation errors and continue the task.
Screen-reader checks
Use a screen reader on representative target platforms. Confirm that controls and form fields have understandable names, and that important status and error information is conveyed. Test the core experience if a nonessential visual effect or advanced feature is unavailable; essential information and actions should not depend on it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Combine automated tests with hands-on checks
Automation can repeat important regressions across browser projects, while manual checks cover usability and platform behavior that a test run or emulated viewport may not establish. MDN recommends checking changes during development, starting with a couple of stable browsers and a mobile platform, then broadening to the agreed target matrix.
Configure representative Playwright projects
Playwright projects can run tests in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and can also be configured for branded Chrome or Edge and emulated mobile or tablet devices. Choose projects to match your support matrix; the available engine projects alone do not prove coverage of every branded browser or physical device.

Start automated regression coverage with the site’s highest-value journeys. Add browser projects that matter to the audience or requirements, and use device profiles for an efficient initial pass on mobile and tablet layouts. Keep Playwright and its browser builds current: its documentation recommends updating so tests can cover recent browser versions and catch changes early.
Keep manual checks for what automation cannot settle
- Visual inspection of important pages at representative sizes.
- Keyboard and screen-reader operation of essential journeys.
- Behavior tied to real hardware, operating systems, branded browsers, or media capabilities.
- Confirmation that a test failure is a real product issue rather than an unstable test.
7. Record defects and make an explicit launch decision
For every issue, capture enough detail for someone else to reproduce it and decide whether it blocks launch.
Defect record
- Browser and version, operating system, and device or viewport.
- Reproduction steps, expected result, and actual result.
- Severity and whether a core journey is blocked.
- Retest result after the fix, plus relevant regression-test results.
Launch record
Keep the agreed support matrix, test date and build, results, known limitations, and named acceptance of any remaining exception. This makes the launch decision traceable: the team can see what was tested, what was not, and which remaining differences were accepted.
