Cross-browser compatibility testing checks that a website or web app works for its audience across relevant browsers, operating systems, and devices—not just in the developer’s default browser. Start with audience data and product risk to choose a manageable test matrix, automate important workflows across browser engines, and validate platform-specific behavior on representative real devices when needed.

What cross-browser testing needs to cover

A useful test plan checks more than whether a page loads. It should cover the workflows and conditions most likely to affect real users:

  • Core functionality: sign-in, checkout, forms, navigation, dialogs, and error states.
  • Responsive behavior: representative viewport widths and orientations, including menus, content flow, and touch interactions.
  • Browser feature support: APIs, media, and other technologies the product depends on.
  • Accessibility: keyboard-only navigation, focus movement, and screen-reader navigation through key workflows.
  • Platform-dependent behavior: rendering, fonts, input, codecs, browser policies, and assistive technology where relevant.

Automated checks are effective for repeatable regressions. Manual review helps assess usability and investigate differences that depend on a particular platform or assistive technology.

Which browsers and devices should I test?

Choose combinations based on your audience, contractual requirements, customer reports, and the risk of failure. MDN Web Docs advises prioritizing the browsers and devices important to the target audience: “Since you can’t test every combination of browser and device, it’s enough that you ensure your site works on the most important ones.” MDN’s browser and device selection guidance explains this audience-based approach.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Write a support policy. Record supported browser families, operating systems, and device classes. Distinguish support commitments from the narrower set exercised in every test run.
  2. Use audience evidence. Review your own analytics and customer reports; add contractual requirements where applicable. Do not substitute a universal browser list for your product’s actual audience.
  3. Add risk-based cases. Prioritize combinations tied to critical workflows, browser-specific APIs, media playback, complex responsive layouts, or known issues.
  4. Tier coverage. Run broad checks on high-priority combinations and a smaller smoke suite on lower-priority ones. Document the support boundary and what is not covered.

There is no single exhaustive matrix that fits every site, and a browser engine is not the same thing as every browser brand or operating-system combination. For example, a WebKit test is useful engine coverage, but Playwright notes that its WebKit build may precede changes reaching branded Safari.

Build a practical test matrix

Make the matrix small enough to run and maintain, but explicit enough that the team knows what each run proves. Select entries using audience prevalence within your own product, risk, and support policy—not an unsupported market-share assumption.

Coverage tier What to include When to run
Critical Highest-priority audience combinations and essential user journeys; include representative operating systems and device classes where product risk warrants it. On pull requests or other routine CI runs, keeping the smoke suite focused.
Expanded Additional supported browser, device, and viewport combinations; workflows with higher failure cost; relevant browser-specific features. On scheduled runs, before significant launches, or when related code changes.
Platform-specific Representative real devices or environments for operating-system behavior, codecs, browser policies, or actual assistive technology. When risk, customer reports, or a feature makes emulation insufficient.

For each matrix entry, record the browser or channel, operating system or device class, viewport or orientation where relevant, and the workflows to exercise. A matrix is a policy and prioritization tool, not a claim that every combination has been tested.

How to automate workflows across browsers with Playwright

Playwright supports projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, as well as branded Chrome and Edge channels and mobile device configurations. Its default installation includes Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects. The examples below use the documented Playwright test configuration pattern; adapt project names and device profiles to the combinations in your support policy. See Playwright browser support and Playwright test projects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure browser projects

In playwright.config.ts, define a small set of projects. This example separates browser-engine checks from a mobile device profile; it is a starting point, not a universal matrix.

import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  testDir: './tests',
  projects: [
    { name: 'chromium', use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'] } },
    { name: 'firefox', use: { ...devices['Desktop Firefox'] } },
    { name: 'webkit', use: { ...devices['Desktop Safari'] } },
    { name: 'mobile-chrome-profile', use: { ...devices['Pixel 7'] } },
  ],
});

Use a device profile only when it matches a case you intend to cover. For branded browser coverage, Playwright documents channel configuration for Chrome and Edge; an engine project alone does not establish that a branded browser was exercised.

Write an independent smoke test

Keep tests isolated so shared state and execution order do not cause misleading failures. Prefer user-facing locators and assertions over selectors coupled to implementation details, as recommended in Playwright’s test practices.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('visitor can open the product page and submit a contact form', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Contact' }).click();
  await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Contact us' })).toBeVisible();
  await page.getByLabel('Email').fill('visitor@example.com');
  await page.getByLabel('Message').fill('Please contact me.');
  await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Send' }).click();
  await expect(page.getByText('Thank you')).toBeVisible();
});

Replace the example URL, labels, and expected confirmation with your application’s actual behavior. Run the suite across configured projects with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
npx playwright test

To focus on one project, use its configured name:

npx playwright test --project=webkit

Keep a short, high-value smoke suite for frequent CI runs. Add broader assertions where failures are costly, and run longer coverage less frequently if its runtime and maintenance cost do not justify running it on every change.

Can I use emulation instead of a real device?

Use emulation for checks it can represent, but do not treat it as a physical device. Playwright can emulate settings such as user agent, screen size, viewport, touch, locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and color scheme. That is useful for responsive layouts and many interaction checks; details are in Playwright’s emulation documentation.

  • Emulation is useful for: viewport-dependent layout, many touch and user-agent checks, locale or timezone behavior, and color-scheme variations.
  • Use representative real environments when needed for: operating-system behavior, hardware-dependent behavior, codec availability, browser policies, or actual assistive-technology navigation.

Playwright notes that media codec availability varies by operating system. Its WebKit build is derived from upstream WebKit and may not include changes already present in branded Safari. Decide whether real-platform validation is necessary based on the feature and the consequences of a failure.

Combine automation with manual and accessibility checks

Choose representative pages and workflows, then review them in the combinations that matter to your support policy. MDN’s testing introduction and automated testing guidance distinguish automated repeatability from checks that need human judgment.

Diagnose and report a browser-specific failure

A report should let another person reproduce the problem and distinguish a browser-specific issue from a general product defect.

  1. Reproduce the failure in the affected browser and device or emulation configuration.
  2. Record exact browser and operating-system versions, viewport, steps, expected result, and actual result.
  3. Include relevant console or network errors and a screenshot or recording when useful.
  4. Classify likely causes: unsupported feature usage, layout assumptions, font or rendering differences, input behavior, browser policy, or a product defect.
  5. Before changing code or adding a polyfill, check current compatibility documentation for the feature. MDN points to feature compatibility information in its browser and device strategy guidance.

Troubleshooting common test problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
A test passes in one browser project but fails in another. A real browser difference, unsupported feature, timing assumption, or brittle locator. Reproduce in the failing project, inspect console and network output, verify feature support, and prefer stable user-facing locators.
A simulated mobile check passes, but users report a device-specific defect. The behavior depends on hardware, operating-system policies, codecs, or a capability emulation does not reproduce. Validate on a representative physical device or platform before treating the emulation result as conclusive.
A WebKit test is treated as proof that Safari works. Engine-level coverage is being conflated with a branded browser and its platform. Test the relevant branded browser or representative platform when the support policy or risk requires it.
A test passes alone but fails in the full suite. Tests share state or depend on execution order. Isolate setup and data so each test can run independently, and remove hidden dependencies between cases.
A test suite starts failing after a Playwright update. The test framework and installed browser binaries may no longer be aligned. Install the browser binaries corresponding to the updated Playwright release and rerun the affected projects.
A visual or feature claim is based on an old compatibility table. Browser support may have changed since the information was checked. Verify current compatibility information for the specific technology and target environment before changing code.

Maintain the matrix as browsers and products change

Browser versions, framework support, and device profiles evolve. Playwright updates supported browser versions along with its releases; update the dependency and install the corresponding browser binaries as part of that maintenance, following Playwright’s browser installation guidance.

  • Keep a lightweight, high-value smoke run in CI.
  • Review coverage after browser releases and before important launches.
  • Expand or adjust the matrix when audience evidence, product changes, or customer reports alter risk.
  • Use deeper suites where the added confidence justifies execution and maintenance cost.

Or skip the browser setup

For screenshots used in visual review or documentation, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A screenshot can show what a page looked like in one captured configuration, but it does not replace running functional workflows across browsers and devices.

One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

FAQ

Does passing a screenshot check mean a browser is compatible?

No. A screenshot can reveal visual differences, but it does not demonstrate that a workflow, keyboard interaction, or assistive-technology experience works correctly.

Should I test every browser version?

No practical team can cover every browser, device, operating system, and version combination. Define the support boundary and prioritize combinations that matter to your audience and product risk.
