React does not guarantee that every React app works in every browser. Set a support matrix from your users and product requirements, audit the JavaScript, CSS, and browser APIs your app relies on, then test important journeys in representative browser engines and real target environments. For server-rendered apps, also check that the first client render agrees with the server output.

1. Decide which browsers and devices your app supports

There is no universal browser-version matrix for React apps. Base yours on the browsers and operating systems your users actually use, your product requirements, and available analytics. State supported browser families and minimum versions explicitly so developers and testers can make consistent decisions.

  • Include mobile Safari and Android Chrome if mobile web use matters to your audience.
  • Test embedded web views only if users reach your product through them.
  • Prioritize distinct rendering engines, operating-system-specific behavior, and mobile versus desktop interaction—not just the number of browser names in a list.
  • Weigh audience importance and the likely impact of a failure against the cost of maintaining coverage.

A browser market-share percentage is useful only when it is current and relevant to your audience and geography; do not treat a global or undated figure as your product’s support policy.

2. Audit the features and build output

React is one layer of compatibility. Your compiled JavaScript, dependencies, styling, and use of browser APIs can each introduce problems. React’s documentation says it supports popular browsers and notes that older browsers may require polyfills; that does not guarantee that every package or app feature works in your chosen targets (React DOM APIs).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make a feature inventory

  • List browser APIs your app calls, such as storage, media, or device features.
  • Identify JavaScript syntax and CSS features your code and dependencies need.
  • Check that your transpilation and polyfill setup matches the minimum versions in your support matrix.
  • For each feature with limited support, decide whether to use a fallback, an alternate implementation, or explicitly unsupported behavior.

MDN’s Baseline can help identify browser support for web features. It is a support summary, not a pass/fail test suite; it does not replace accessibility, usability, performance, security, or other testing.

3. Test the behavior users depend on

Choose a small, risk-based set of end-to-end journeys and run them against the targets in your matrix. Check what the app does, not only whether it loads. MDN’s cross-browser testing introduction describes browser, device, and feature differences and approaches to handling them.

4. Automate across browser engines, then verify key environments

Playwright can run tests with Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and supports selected mobile-device emulations. A configuration with projects for the engines in your support matrix can catch many issues early. Keep Playwright and its browser binaries updated together.

Playwright’s WebKit build is not branded Safari. Operating-system integration, codecs, and real hardware can affect behavior, so automation alone may not be enough for features that depend on them. Verify such cases on the actual target operating system and device. Device emulation helps exercise selected contexts; it does not turn every desktop run into a substitute for a physical-device check.

5. Check server rendering and hydration

For server-rendered content, the initial HTML and the first client render must agree sufficiently for hydration. Browser-only values—such as local storage or a client timezone—need a deliberate strategy so they do not produce incompatible initial output.

React 19.3, documented in a release published on September 9, 2026, describes use(browser()) as a targeted way to make a component browser-only during server rendering. It must be inside a Suspense boundary on the server and used in a Client Component. This is for content that cannot produce meaningful server output, not a requirement for every React app (React 19.3).

6. Debug failures with a reproducible report

When a test fails, reproduce it in the affected browser version and operating system before changing code. Capture the details that narrow down the cause:

For screenshots of a page during visual checks, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for interactive cross-browser tests, but it can make repeatable page captures easier. The cURL example below captures a page as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

FAQ

Does React work in Safari and Firefox?

React documents support for popular browsers, but your app’s actual compatibility depends on its build, dependencies, browser APIs, and styling. Test Safari and Firefox if your support matrix includes them rather than assuming React alone settles the question.

Does passing Playwright WebKit tests prove my app works in Safari?

No. Playwright’s WebKit build is distinct from branded Safari, and some behavior depends on the operating system or hardware. Test important OS-specific cases in the real target environment.
