For a U.S. older adult who is not planning to apply for credit soon, a credit freeze is generally the stronger protection against someone opening new credit in their name. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says freezes are often a good fit for older adults who are not planning to take out new credit. A fraud alert is easier to place and leaves the credit report accessible, but asks businesses to verify identity before granting new credit. Both are free, and a person can use both.
How a freeze and a fraud alert differ
These protections address a specific risk: someone using a person’s identity to open new credit. A freeze restricts access to the credit report; a fraud alert asks businesses to take an extra identity-check step. Neither one secures bank accounts, Medicare records, tax accounts, mail, or existing accounts.
| Decision | Credit freeze | Initial fraud alert |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Limits access to the credit report. Because creditors generally need to review that report before opening new credit, an active freeze can block new-account applications made in the person’s name. | Asks businesses to verify the applicant’s identity before granting new credit. The report remains accessible. |
| Who can place it | Anyone, for any reason. | Anyone who is or suspects they may be affected by identity theft. |
| Cost | Free to place and lift. | Free. |
| Where to place it | Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. | Contact one of the three nationwide bureaus; it must notify the other two. |
| How long it lasts | Until the consumer lifts or removes it. | One year; it may be renewed. |
| When applying for credit | Temporarily lift it so the lender can check the report, then reinstate it afterward. | The alert remains a request for identity verification; it does not require opening report access. |
The FTC describes freezes as generally best for people who are not planning to take out new credit, often including older adults. See the FTC’s comparison of fraud alerts and credit freezes and its guidance on choosing between them.

Choose a freeze when new credit is not expected
A freeze is a strong default when the person is unlikely to apply for a credit card, loan, or other new credit soon and can manage a temporary lift if needed. It does not change the credit score or prevent use of existing credit cards. The practical tradeoff is that a lender may be unable to access the report until the freeze is lifted.

Choose an initial fraud alert when continued report access matters
An initial alert may suit someone who suspects identity theft or prefers not to restrict report access. The alert asks businesses to verify identity before granting credit, but it is not a block on report access. It lasts one year and can be renewed at no cost.
Use both when fraud is suspected
The choice is not necessarily either-or. The FTC says a person with a freeze may also place an initial fraud alert if they suspect fraud. A freeze restricts report access while the alert adds a verification request.

How to place and manage the protections
Place a credit freeze
- Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion individually to place the freeze. Use each bureau’s official website or contact channel.
- When applying for credit, ask the lender which bureau it plans to check, if possible. Temporarily lift the freeze with that bureau so the lender can access the report.
- After the lender’s check, restore the freeze if the person still wants it in place.
Place an initial fraud alert
- Contact any one of Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion and request an initial fraud alert.
- That bureau must notify the other two. The alert is free and lasts one year.
- Renew it when it expires if the person still wants the alert in place.
For official placement details, consult the FTC’s credit freeze and fraud alert guidance.

Keep financial records, Social Security and Medicare cards, and other sensitive papers in a safe place. Shred sensitive documents before disposal; if a shredder is unavailable, look for a local shred event or obscure account numbers before discarding them. This reduces exposure from discarded paperwork, but does not replace a bureau freeze or fraud alert. The FTC offers identity-theft prevention and response guidance.
