Earned Media Value (EMV) is an estimate of the value of earned-media activity, not revenue or financial return. CreatorIQ presents EMV as a benchmarking measure alongside its Social Media Value (SMV) methodology; Traackr classifies EMV as cost equivalency and emphasizes its Brand Vitality Score (VIT), built around visibility, impact, and brand trust. Neither platform’s EMV figure alone proves that a campaign generated sales or profit. To assess influencer ROI, compare how each platform defines and reports its metrics, then connect creator activity to tracked business outcomes.
What EMV measures—and what it does not
EMV assigns an estimated monetary value to earned-media exposure or engagement. It can help a team benchmark activity over time or compare its earned presence with other marketing activity, depending on the methodology used. It is not a universal accounting standard, and a dollar figure labelled EMV should not be read as revenue, profit, or company value.
CreatorIQ’s 2022 measurement guide describes its approach as valuing content based on the platform and engagement—such as likes, comments, shares, or video views—and attributing that value to brands mentioned in a post. That is CreatorIQ’s methodology description, not a universal formula. Its guide also cautions against treating EMV as a standalone measure and recommends considering posting activity and engagement rate alongside it. CreatorIQ’s 2022 measurement guide
Traackr makes the distinction especially explicit: its glossary categorizes EMV as a cost-equivalency measure and warns that it can be misused as a performance metric. Cost equivalency asks what earned activity is worth under a chosen comparison method; ROI asks whether the investment produced financial outcomes relative to its cost. How CreatorIQ and Traackr frame measurement
| Measurement area | CreatorIQ’s public description | Traackr’s public description |
|---|---|---|
| EMV | Estimates the value of engagement with digital earned media; positioned as useful for benchmarking and competitive views. | Classified as cost equivalency; Traackr cautions against treating EMV as a performance metric or ROI. |
| Named complementary approach | Social Media Value (SMV), described as complementary to EMV. | Brand Vitality Score (VIT), framed around visibility, impact, and brand trust. |
| Broader reporting context | Vendor materials describe campaign-, program-, and business-level reporting, configurable dashboards, community tracking, and competitive reporting. | Vendor materials describe campaign tracking, competitive benchmarking, cross-program comparisons, spend-efficiency measures, and integrations. |
These descriptions come from the vendors, not an independent feature test. EMV and VIT are not interchangeable: EMV assigns an estimated monetary equivalency to earned activity, while Traackr presents VIT as an aggregate score spanning visibility, impact, and trust. CreatorIQ describes SMV as a complementary methodology, but the public materials cited here do not establish a basis for treating SMV as financially realized return either.
CreatorIQ outlines its SMV framing in its methodology overview and describes configurable dashboards and reporting in its reporting and insights materials. Traackr describes its tracking and integration capabilities on its influencer tracking page. These are product descriptions, not evidence that one platform produces more accurate ROI for a particular organization.

How to compare the platforms for your ROI question
Start with the business question you need answered. If the goal is awareness, earned-media benchmarking may be useful. If the goal is financial return, the comparison must include tracked outcomes and costs, not just a platform’s EMV or aggregate score.
- Metric purpose: Ask which measures describe exposure, engagement, efficiency, and financial outcomes. Confirm that the labels match how your team intends to use the numbers.
- Inputs and formula: Request the precise calculation, data sources, weighting, platform coverage, and treatment of paid versus organic content. Ask for an auditable sample calculation rather than relying on a headline total.
- Comparable reporting: Check whether channel differences and creator audience size are handled in ways that make comparisons meaningful. CreatorIQ’s guide cautions that a larger account can generate more EMV from one post than a smaller creator posting more consistently, so EMV alone can obscure activity patterns.
- Outcome attribution: Establish how posts can be connected to clicks, conversions, revenue, or other business outcomes, and what tracking or integrations are required. A reported EMV total does not itself establish that connection.
- Reporting scope: Match the vendor’s stated campaign and program reporting to the decisions your team actually makes, such as creator selection, budget allocation, or competitive benchmarking.
- Contract scope: Confirm which metrics, integrations, data access, and exports are included in the current plan and contract; the cited public materials do not establish pricing or plan-specific availability.
Traackr CMO Evy Lyons illustrates the risk of overreading EMV: “The challenge with EMV is that it puts a dollar on a metric that doesn’t actually measure financial value. For example, if you complete a $10k campaign and receive $1M in EMV, that is quickly seen as ‘we’ve created a million dollars worth of value’ – but that’s not true. Is that million dollars in your sales? Is it the value of your company? The metric doesn’t measure ROI nor does it help you understand what is actually working.” The example and warning appear in Traackr’s measurement and strategy article; the figures are illustrative, not a typical campaign result.

When EMV is useful—and how to put it in context
EMV can be useful as one indicator of earned-media activity when a team applies a consistent methodology over time. It can support benchmarking, trend monitoring, and discussion of a program’s earned footprint. It becomes less informative when used alone to rank creators of different sizes or to claim financial return.
A practical scorecard separates the questions rather than compressing them into one dollar figure:
Rank #4
- Awareness: Track relevant exposure or visibility measures.
- Engagement: Review interactions and engagement rates alongside how often creators posted.
- Efficiency: Compare spend with outputs such as cost per post, view, engagement, or click where those measures are available.
- Financial outcome: Use tracked conversions, revenue, or another agreed business outcome, with a clear method for attribution and cost accounting.
CreatorIQ’s 2025–2026 State of Creator Marketing report says respondents were nearly evenly split across multiple metrics when asked which measure was most useful for justifying creator programs to leadership, and recommends a layered, outcomes-based approach. The retrieved report material does not provide enough survey methodology or sample detail to treat that finding as representative of all marketers. CreatorIQ’s 2025–2026 report

What the public evidence can—and cannot—settle
The available vendor materials describe different measurement frameworks and reporting capabilities, but they do not establish which platform produces more accurate ROI or better value for a particular buyer. No independent comparative accuracy statistic is provided in these sources. The choice therefore depends on the program’s goals and on whether a vendor can show, with transparent definitions and auditable data, how its measures support the decisions your team needs to make.
