Move.js lets you build CSS-backed animations by selecting an element, queueing style and transform changes, setting timing, and calling .end() to start. Its chainable API can handle a single movement or a sequence of actions. Because the package is older, check it against your project’s browser and build requirements before adopting it.
What Move.js does
The Move.js project README describes it as “a small JavaScript library making CSS3 backed animation extremely simple and elegant.” In practice, you use its chainable JavaScript API to queue supported style changes and transforms for a selected DOM element. The animation begins when you call .end().
The project documents installation through npm with npm install move-js, or by including its standalone move.min.js script. The npm listing identifies version 0.5.0 as the package’s only published version and dates its publication to roughly 11 years before the listing’s search crawl. That makes Move.js an older library, but those facts alone do not establish whether it is maintained, secure, or compatible with a particular current browser or framework. Check it in your own stack before relying on it.
Build and start a basic animation
- Select the element. Pass a selector, such as
'.square', tomove(). - Queue changes. Add documented methods such as
.translate(),.rotate(),.scale(), or.set(). - Set timing and easing. Use
.duration()and, if desired,.ease(). - Start the animation. Call
.end(). Pass a function to.end(fn)to run it when the animation finishes.
move('.square')
.translate(300, 80)
.rotate(140)
.duration('700ms')
.ease('out')
.end();
This follows the API shown in the project documentation; it is an illustrative pattern, not a claim of independent testing. The selected element must exist when the animation runs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose properties and transformations
The documented methods include .set(prop, val) for setting a property, .add(prop, val) and .sub(prop, val) for changing a value, and .rotate(deg), .translate(x, y), .x(n), .y(n), .skew(x, y), and .scale(x, y) for transforms. The documentation also gives .to(x, y) as an alias for .translate(x, y). For example, the README queues movement, rotation, scaling, color and border changes, duration, and skew on a square element.
Do not assume that this method list means Move.js supports every CSS property or every modern application framework. The retrieved project documentation establishes the methods and examples above, not universal property or integration support.

Control duration, delay, and easing
The API reference documents a default duration of 500 in move.defaults. The .duration(n) and .delay(n) methods accept either a number or a time string such as '4s'. Use a duration that suits the action, and test the result in the browsers your project targets.
The documented easing choices include in, out, in-out, snap, and custom cubic-bezier values passed to .ease(). The README lists additional named curves. An easing choice changes how progress feels over time; it is not a measure or guarantee of performance.

Sequence animations with .then() and .pop()
Use .then() to defer a later action or Move instance until the current stage completes. In a nested chain, .pop() returns to the parent chain so you can add another stage there. This pattern is useful when an interaction needs distinct steps rather than several changes launched together.
move('.square')
.set('opacity', 1)
.duration('300ms')
.then(function () {
return move('.square')
.translate(300, 80)
.duration('700ms');
})
.pop()
.then(function () {
return move('.square').rotate(140).duration('400ms');
})
.end();
Move.js documents .then(fn) and .pop() for sequential actions. Check the project API and test the exact chain you intend to use, especially when mixing nested chains and callbacks.

Respect reduced-motion preferences
MDN Web Docs contributors define the prefers-reduced-motion media feature as a way to detect when a user has enabled a device setting to minimize non-essential motion. MDN’s reference page, modified June 10, 2026, notes that scaling and panning large objects can be vestibular triggers and recommends reducing or replacing such motion. The retrieved Move.js documentation does not describe built-in reduced-motion handling, so account for the preference in your application.
For CSS motion associated with the animated element, a reduced-motion rule can remove transitions:

@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) {
.square {
transition: none !important;
}
}
If Move.js applies optional movement through JavaScript, you can also avoid starting that animation when the preference is active:
const reduceMotion = window.matchMedia(
'(prefers-reduced-motion: reduce)'
).matches;
if (!reduceMotion) {
move('.square')
.translate(300, 80)
.duration('700ms')
.end();
}
For an essential state change, provide the changed state without requiring the motion to understand it.
Consider performance in the actual interface
Animation cost depends on the properties being changed. MDN explains that changes to dimensions, position, or layout can trigger reflow or repaint; transforms and opacity are commonly preferable candidates. This is guidance for choosing what to profile, not a guarantee that any particular Move.js animation will be smooth. Measure the real page on its target devices rather than assuming a fixed frame rate or automatic acceleration.
When Move.js fits—and what to verify
Move.js is worth evaluating when you want a small chainable API for simple element changes or staged animations. A plain CSS transition may be enough for a simple state change; a JavaScript sequence may be more convenient when actions need to follow one another. Decide based on the interaction, reduced-motion behavior, animated properties, and the compatibility requirements of your project.
