To create a subreddit, choose Create Community on Reddit.com or Start a Community in the Reddit app, then set its name, description, topics, visibility, and 18+ status. Decide what the community is for and how you will moderate it first: Reddit says names cannot be changed after creation, and its pre-creation guidance says communities cannot be deleted.
Things to know before creating a community
Define its purpose and check for overlap
Write down what the community is for and who it serves. Search Reddit for active communities with the same focus before starting a new one. Reddit recommends joining and contributing to a thriving community, or volunteering to moderate it, rather than creating a duplicate without a distinct purpose. If a similar community is unmoderated, Reddit points users to r/redditrequest.

Choose a name carefully
A community name must be 3–21 characters. Reddit says it cannot be edited after creation, including its capitalization. Check spelling and capitalization before submitting; the name becomes part of the community’s lasting identity and URL.

Decide whether it needs the 18+ setting
If the community’s content will primarily be Not Safe For Work (NSFW), Reddit requires it to be marked 18+. Reddit warns that failing to set this can lead to a ban for disregarding its rules. The setting may turn on automatically when you choose an 18+ topic.

Be ready to moderate
The creator automatically becomes the top moderator, so plan who will handle rules and moderation before launch. Reddit recommends adding moderators when you have limited time or experience. Its rules tool lets moderators set a rule name, description, report reason, and scope; use clear names, detailed descriptions, a sensible order, and make rules available in the sidebar.

Make the community’s purpose clear
In moderation tools, review the description and other community settings. Reddit says the description can appear in search results and the mobile community view, so use it to explain the community’s purpose and vision. The Community Guide can add a welcome message, links, and other context for new members.

Set rules and organize posts
Write rules that tell members what is allowed and how to report problems. User flair can label members, while post flair can categorize content. These settings help members understand expectations and make posts easier to navigate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Balance discoverability with moderation capacity
Discoverability controls affect whether a community can appear in high-traffic feeds and whether Reddit recommends it to users. Greater exposure can bring a large influx of visitors and comments, so weigh potential reach against your ability to moderate and the sensitivity of the subject. For support or identity communities where broad exposure could invite harm or harassment, Reddit specifically suggests considering turning off discoverability. Enabling it does not guarantee growth.
Reddit documents these controls in its community settings guide. Its creation guide and pre-creation guidance also cover decisions to make before launch.
