You can create a SharePoint HTML dashboard from a Copilot prompt, review and edit its draft, then publish it as an HTML page. You can also upload an existing HTML file. The key design constraint is that SharePoint runs these pages in a sandbox: supported SharePoint list and Excel data sharing is available, but arbitrary API calls and third-party live data connections are not.

Choose how to create the dashboard

Route Starting point Prerequisite Best suited to
Create with Copilot Describe the dashboard in a prompt and review the generated page. Page creation or editing permission and a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to use the Copilot chat pane. A new dashboard based on a clear audience, content, and layout brief.
Upload or move HTML Bring an existing HTML file into SharePoint. Applicable file and site permissions; Microsoft’s support table says this route does not require a Copilot license. An existing page that you want to host as a SharePoint HTML page.

Both routes remain subject to SharePoint page permissions and the HTML page limits described below. Microsoft’s instructions for creating, uploading, editing, and publishing HTML pages in SharePoint describe the available workflows.

Check access and site settings first

  • For Copilot-pane authoring, make sure you have permission to create or edit pages and an active Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
  • If HTML page creation or upload is unavailable, ask a site owner to check the Site Pages library’s Allow HTML files setting. HTML pages are enabled by default, but the setting can be turned off and re-enabled by a site owner.
  • Copilot availability can depend on your tenant’s rollout and site AI settings. Microsoft says Copilot in SharePoint general availability begins rolling out on September 30, 2026; that is a rollout start, not a guarantee that the feature is already available in every tenant.

Microsoft’s Copilot in SharePoint guidance says everyday capabilities are included with an active Microsoft 365 Copilot license; advanced work uses usage-based billing and Copilot Credits. Site owners can manage availability with Site AI settings, and Restricted Content Discovery is respected. Microsoft also notes that some HTML-page functionality is gradually being introduced to organizations opted in to Microsoft Frontier, so options may not appear everywhere or may look different.

Create a dashboard with Copilot

  1. Open the HTML page workflow. On a SharePoint site, select + New > HTML page. From the Publish landing page, use + Create > HTML page. You can also open the floating Copilot button on the site.
  2. Describe the dashboard. Specify who will use it, which source content it should draw on, the metrics and sections to include, the preferred layout, and brand colors. Attach relevant files when they will help Copilot shape the page. Microsoft’s examples include project status, roadmaps, telemetry, and FAQs.
  3. Review the generated draft in edit mode. Change text directly on the canvas or use the Copilot chat pane for broader content and design changes. Give targeted instructions—for example, name the section to change and the result you want, such as adding an FAQ section or changing a background color.
  4. Check the page location. The HTML page is stored in the site’s Site Pages library. Review the content and layout before publishing.
  5. Publish or keep a draft. Choose Publish when the page is ready, or Save and close to retain it as a draft.
  6. Share access separately. Use Share to grant or distribute access using the available sharing option. Publishing makes the current version visible to people who already have permission; it does not grant new permissions.

Design around the HTML sandbox

SharePoint renders HTML pages in a sandboxed iframe, separated from the site’s header, footer, and navigation and governed by Content Security Policy controls. That matters most when a dashboard depends on live data or external scripts.

  • Data connections: Microsoft documents live data sharing from SharePoint lists and Excel. Arbitrary fetch requests and outbound API calls are blocked, and live data sharing from third-party sources such as Jira is listed as unsupported. Do not plan on custom JavaScript calling a remote API directly from the page.
  • Libraries: Microsoft lists Chart.js, Mermaid, React, Fluent UI, and Babylon as supported Microsoft-managed CDN libraries. Other CDN-hosted scripts are unsupported. JavaScript contained in the same HTML file is supported.
  • Browser storage: The sandbox cannot access browser localStorage.
  • External links: Links outside SharePoint may require a site administrator to add the domain to the HTML Field Security allow list. Cross-tenant links support navigation, not cross-tenant communication.
  • Branding: Copilot-created pages use site branding. An uploaded HTML page does not automatically inherit it; you can prompt Copilot to match the site.

These constraints favor dashboards built around supported SharePoint or Excel content and self-contained HTML, rather than pages that depend on arbitrary third-party services.

Keep the file within the size limit

Microsoft sets a maximum HTML upload size of 10 MB. If a file exceeds the limit, reduce inline CSS and JavaScript, remove unused markup, or reference hosted assets to shrink the uploaded page.

Know what an HTML page cannot do

Microsoft’s feature matrix lists several limitations that affect how teams can use and maintain these pages. HTML pages cannot be promoted to news posts, saved as templates, scheduled, co-authored, or given reactions and comments. Plan for page ownership and updates accordingly; do not assume the page has the same collaboration and publishing features as other SharePoint content types.
