To create a WordPress theme settings page, register an admin menu page, register an option with its settings sections and fields, then render a form that submits through WordPress’s options.php endpoint. The key is to keep the option group, option name, page slug, and field input names consistent—and to sanitize submitted values and escape output.
Choose a dedicated page or an existing settings screen
If your theme has only a few controls that fit naturally on a built-in settings screen, adding fields there can spare users another destination to learn. Create a custom theme settings page when the options form a coherent group that merits its own screen. A custom page also means you must register the menu entry and provide its display callback.
The example below uses a custom page with the slug mytheme-settings, an option group named mytheme_settings, and one stored option named mytheme_options. WordPress documents the underlying [Settings API pattern](https://developer.wordpress.org/plugins/settings/settings-api/) and the [custom settings page composition](https://developer.wordpress.org/plugins/settings/creating-options-pages/).
Register the option, section, and field
Register settings during admin_init. The setting’s option name identifies the value stored through the Options API; the option group is used by the form helper and must match the group passed to register_setting(). Sections organize related fields, while each field specifies a rendering callback.

?>add_theme_page() places the screen under Appearance and accepts the capability, page slug, and callback shown above. For a different location, use the appropriate WordPress admin-menu function and check its arguments in the [function reference](https://developer.wordpress.org/reference/functions/add_theme_page/). The page slug used in add_settings_section(), add_settings_field(), and do_settings_sections() must match.
How the form saves the value
The page callback prints a POST form to options.php. settings_fields( 'mytheme_settings' ) outputs the hidden fields needed for the registered option group, including the nonce. do_settings_sections( 'mytheme-settings' ) renders the section and its fields, and submit_button() adds the save control. WordPress’s [Settings API documentation](https://developer.wordpress.org/plugins/settings/settings-api/) explains that submissions go through options.php, which applies capability checks.

The field’s input name, mytheme_options[accent], places the submitted value inside the mytheme_options array. That root name must match the option name registered with register_setting(). After saving, retrieve the option with get_option( 'mytheme_options' ).
Sanitize on save and escape on output
The sanitize_callback validates and normalizes submitted data before it is stored. In this example, sanitize_hex_color() accepts a valid hex color; invalid or missing input falls back to the chosen default. Adapt the validation to the actual type and allowed values of each setting rather than trusting browser-side controls.

Escape stored values for the context where they appear. The example uses esc_attr() for an HTML attribute and esc_html_e() for visible text. WordPress’s [register_setting() reference](https://developer.wordpress.org/reference/functions/register_setting/) describes setting arguments, including sanitization, and its [add_settings_field() reference](https://developer.wordpress.org/reference/functions/add_settings_field/) covers field callbacks and input names.
Permissions and multisite behavior
Use a capability appropriate to the setting’s impact. This example uses manage_options, the capability required for the Settings API options submission described in the [Plugin Handbook](https://developer.wordpress.org/plugins/settings/settings-api/). On multisite, submitting through options.php requires a Super Admin. The page callback’s capability check also avoids rendering its contents to unauthorized users.
