Apache Wink’s archived “Hello World” tutorial shows how to create a basic JAX-RS resource, register it with an application, map it through a servlet, package it as a WAR, and deploy it to a web container. Apache now marks Wink as retired, so treat the steps as a guide to legacy code and the JAX-RS 1.0 era—not as a recommendation for a new service. The tutorial was last changed October 13, 2009. Apache’s Getting Started tutorial and project documentation remain available.

What Apache Wink and JAX-RS do

REST is an architectural style for networked applications. JAX-RS is a Java API for building REST-style web services over HTTP; its annotations let a resource class declare which paths and HTTP methods it handles. Apache Wink implemented JAX-RS and added a server runtime, a client API, request and response handlers, and providers for formats including JSON, XML, Atom, RSS, CSV, and HTML. These are documented historical capabilities, not an indication that the project is maintained today. Apache Wink’s introduction and JAX-RS concepts guide describe them.

What the archived Hello World example demonstrates

The sample defines a resource at /helloworld and uses @GET to respond with the plain-text message Hello World!. The tutorial itself cautions: “While not entirely RESTful, this example project is to show how to create a simple application and how to package it for consumption in a web container.” It is a minimal framework and deployment demonstration, not a model of a complete REST API. The archived tutorial contains the original code and packaging instructions.

Resource class

In the tutorial’s JAX-RS 1.0-era style, the resource class uses javax.ws.rs annotations. Its essential pattern is a class-level path and a method-level HTTP verb:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
@Path("/helloworld")
public class HelloWorld {
    @GET
    @Produces("text/plain")
    public String getMessage() {
        return "Hello World!";
    }
}

The annotations identify the URL path, HTTP method, and response media type. This fragment illustrates the concept; by itself it is not a deployable application.

How the tutorial assembles and deploys the application

The archived walkthrough moves from the resource class to the web-application setup. Its sequence is useful when reading an older Wink project:

  1. Create the resource. Add the @Path("/helloworld") class and its @GET method.
  2. Register the resource. Create a subclass of javax.ws.rs.core.Application that returns the resource class.
  3. Configure Wink’s servlet. In web.xml, configure RestServlet and the application parameter so Wink can load the application.
  4. Map the URL space. Map the servlet to /rest/*. With the tutorial’s resource path, the request is served beneath the web application’s context path at /rest/helloworld.
  5. Package and deploy. Package the application as a WAR and deploy it to a web container. The tutorial names Jetty, Tomcat, and Geronimo as examples; that historical list is not a current compatibility guarantee.

Dependencies in the old sample

The tutorial’s sample archive lists jsr311-api-1.0.jar, wink-common, and wink-server, among other dependencies. Those names identify the older example’s JAX-RS and Wink components; they are not recommendations for dependencies in a new service. Follow the archived tutorial for its complete historical configuration rather than assuming the snippet above supplies every required file.

Is Apache Wink suitable for a new service?

No, not as a framework to select for a newly built service: Apache’s Wink documentation states, “This project has retired.” The Apache site continues to host documentation for Wink 1.4.0 and earlier releases, but accessible documentation does not mean active maintenance. This status was checked October 4, 2026; the cited project page does not establish a specific retirement date. Apache Wink Documentation.

The example belongs to the javax.ws.rs and JAX-RS 1.0 era. The archived sources do not establish that its configuration works with present-day Java or Jakarta REST runtimes. Use it to understand or maintain a legacy application only after checking that application’s actual runtime, dependencies, and deployment environment. If you are building a new service, choose a currently supported implementation compatible with your Java and Jakarta environment; the cited Wink material does not establish which modern implementation to choose.

When this tutorial is useful

  • Useful for legacy maintenance: tracing how an older Wink application registers resource classes and connects them to a servlet mapping.
  • Useful for learning the basics: seeing how JAX-RS annotations associate a Java method with a path and HTTP verb.
  • Not a current setup guide: it predates current Java and Jakarta REST environments, and the project is retired.
