To combine 3D points, a line, and a surface in Matplotlib, create one axes with projection="3d" and draw all three elements on that same axes. Use ax.scatter() for observations, ax.plot() for a connected path, and ax.plot_surface() for a surface defined on a rectangular coordinate grid.
Build a Matplotlib 3D scatter plot with a line and surface
This runnable example makes a curved surface, adds three sample observations and a line, and labels the axes. The points and line coordinates are illustrative; replace them with your data, using consistent coordinate units across all elements.

plt.show()The key is that fig.add_subplot(projection="3d") returns the 3D axes, and each plotting call uses that same ax. Matplotlib also supports creating a 3D axes with plt.subplots(subplot_kw={"projection": "3d"}). See the mplot3d toolkit guide and the Axes3D API reference.
Prepare the surface grid
plot_surface(X, Y, Z) expects X and Y coordinate grids and a corresponding Z grid. For a regular rectangular grid, np.meshgrid() turns one-dimensional x and y coordinate arrays into two-dimensional coordinate arrays; calculate Z at those grid locations and pass all three arrays to plot_surface. The official 3D surface example uses this pattern.

If your surface samples are irregular rather than arranged on a rectangular grid, consider ax.plot_trisurf(), which supports triangulated data. Choose between the two methods based on how your input points are arranged, not on appearance alone; both methods are documented in the Axes3D API.
Add points and a connected line
Pass the observations’ x, y, and z coordinate arrays to ax.scatter(x_pts, y_pts, z_pts). For a connected path, pass corresponding coordinate arrays to ax.plot(x_line, y_line, z_line); values at matching positions form the plotted line. Use marker, color, and line-style choices that contrast with the surface. The official 3D scatter example shows a scatter plot with labeled axes.

Improve readability and presentation
- Label each coordinate: Set
ax.set_xlabel(),ax.set_ylabel(), andax.set_zlabel()to identify what the axes represent and their units. - Explain the surface colors when needed: A colormap such as
cmap="viridis"assigns colors across the surface. To show what those colors represent, pass the artist returned byplot_surfacetofig.colorbar(surface, ax=ax). The colorbar example in Matplotlib’s surface gallery uses this pattern. - Adjust the view: Use
ax.view_init(elev=..., azim=...)to change elevation and azimuth; the API specifies these angles in degrees. Axis limits and aspect settings can also help frame the data. Check the result from more than one angle if the surface hides points or makes the line difficult to follow. - Use transparency selectively: An
alphavalue on the surface can reveal data behind it, but transparency and depth overlap can also make a combined plot harder to interpret. There is no universal setting that works for every dataset.
Matplotlib’s mplot3d projects a 3D scene into a 2D figure. It is convenient when you want a 3D view within a Matplotlib workflow, but the projection can make overlapping elements ambiguous; inspect the rendered plot rather than assuming every point will remain visible. The toolkit guide describes mplot3d as a simple 3D plotting option, not the fastest or most feature-complete 3D library.
Run plt.show() to display the figure in an interactive script or notebook. For a saved image, use your usual Matplotlib figure-saving workflow.
