To expose a GraphQL API at /graphql with Kotlin and Micronaut, add Micronaut’s GraphQL integration, define a .graphqls schema, connect its fields to data fetchers, and provide a graphql.GraphQL bean with runtime wiring. The integration supplies HTTP request handling; your application supplies the schema and the code that resolves its fields.
What this endpoint does—and what it does not
GraphQL lets a client request selected fields through a schema-defined API. A single endpoint can present data from application services behind that API, but the example below is one Micronaut application with a small in-memory repository. It does not, by itself, establish a multi-service architecture, distributed transactions, or production gateway behavior.
Micronaut’s Kotlin guide demonstrates a bookById query with Book and Author types. The integration module handles HTTP execution, while a GraphQL schema and runtime wiring determine what the client can ask for and how each field is resolved. See the Micronaut Kotlin GraphQL guide.
Choose a compatible Micronaut GraphQL version
The platform catalog lists micronaut-graphql 5.1.0. The integration guide currently labels its documentation version 5.2.0-SNAPSHOT, which is a snapshot—not a released version. Use a released dependency version compatible with your Micronaut platform, and follow documentation for that same release rather than copying a snapshot version into a production build. Generate a Kotlin Micronaut application and add GraphQL

Generate a Micronaut application with Kotlin using the Micronaut CLI or Micronaut Launch. Choose a build system and use its matching guide. For example, the current Kotlin guide’s Maven variant requires JDK 21 or newer. IntelliJ IDEA is one IDE option, not a requirement. See the Kotlin GraphQL guide.

Define the schema clients will use
Create a schema file such as schema.graphqls in the application’s resources. The schema is the public contract: it declares available operations, their arguments, and the types clients may select. A compact book lookup schema can be shaped like this:

}Here, bookById accepts a required ID and can return a book or null; the non-null markers on fields specify which values must be present when an object is returned. Match the schema to your actual domain and expected nullability rather than treating these sample fields as framework requirements.

Connect schema fields to application data
Implement result or domain classes for the schema’s objects, then provide data fetchers that resolve query and nested fields. A fetcher receives the field’s request context and arguments, then obtains the corresponding value from application data. In a small example, that might mean looking up a book in a minimal repository; in an existing service, it can call the application layer responsible for that data.
Micronaut’s guide illustrates the basic data-fetching flow. Persistence is optional: a separate Micronaut GraphQL ToDo guide demonstrates a richer setup with PostgreSQL and Flyway, but those components are not prerequisites for exposing a GraphQL endpoint.

Provide GraphQL runtime wiring and expose the route
The integration does not remove the need to configure GraphQL itself. Provide a graphql.GraphQL bean built from the parsed schema and runtime wiring that associates schema fields with their data fetchers. The integration’s default HTTP path is /graphql; configure graphql.path if the application needs another path. See the endpoint and configuration documentation for the exact setup supported by the version in use.
For nested field lookup, Micronaut GraphQL tries Micronaut bean introspection before GraphQL Java’s default behavior. The integration documentation notes that @Introspected result types can work in native-image builds without additional reflection metadata. This is an integration-specific behavior, not a blanket guarantee that every class or dependency in an application needs no native-image configuration; custom GraphQL Java default data fetchers retain their existing behavior. Send a request and select the fields you need
The Kotlin example uses an HTTP POST request with a JSON body. The integration also documents GET requests with query parameters and POST requests with JSON; successful GraphQL execution returns JSON. A POST body for the sample query can look like this:

}Send that JSON to /graphql on the running application. The selection set asks for the book’s ID and title plus the author’s name; clients can request different fields without changing the endpoint path. Request transport details are documented in the integration guide.
Plan production controls separately
An HTTP route that executes GraphQL requests is not evidence that the route has suitable production protections. The integration documentation describes transport and endpoint configuration but does not establish an application’s authentication, authorization, query complexity or depth limits, rate limiting, or gateway policy. Decide and implement those controls for the deployment and data exposed; do not assume the default /graphql path secures itself.

If you want broader Kotlin study alongside framework documentation, Kotlin’s official documentation recommends Kotlin in Action; the publisher describes its second edition as moving from Kotlin basics toward application development and lists a print-book format.
