On the parent or guardian’s iPhone, open Settings > Family > Add > Create Child Account. Enter your child’s real name and birthday, then follow the prompts. The account joins your Family Sharing group. You can then set up a new iPhone for your child or sign the account in on a device that is already configured.
Before you create the account
Apple says a Child Account is required for children under 13 and can be created for children up to age 18, but the minimum age varies by country or region. Check Apple’s Create a Child Account for your kid’s Apple devices guidance for rules that apply where you live.

The person creating the account should be the Family Sharing organizer or a parent or guardian in the family group. A child should have their own Apple Account rather than share one with another family member. Use the child’s real birthday: it informs age-based protections and account settings.
Family Sharing can include the organizer and up to five other people, according to Apple’s Family Sharing guide.

Create the Child Account from your iPhone
- On the parent or guardian’s iPhone, open Settings and tap Family.
- Tap Add, then tap Create Child Account.
- Enter the child’s name and birthday.

Apple’s guide explains that creating a Child Account gives a child age-based protections that a parent or guardian can adjust later. The account is added to the Family Sharing group.
Set up the child’s iPhone
Choose the route that matches the device’s state and whether you have your own Apple device nearby. Apple documents both setup with Quick Start and setup without another device in its guide to setting up an iPhone.

| New iPhone, parent or guardian’s iPhone available | Use Quick Start: bring the parent or guardian’s signed-in iPhone near the new iPhone and follow the setup prompts. |
| New iPhone, no other device available | Choose the option to set up without another device and follow the prompts on the child’s iPhone. |
| iPhone setup is already complete | Sign in to the child’s Apple Account from Settings on the child’s iPhone, using the account and password or a nearby Apple device. |
Apple notes that a child aged 12 or younger may need the iPhone connected to a parent’s or guardian’s device during setup. Age ranges and requirements can vary by location.
Sign in on an iPhone that is already set up
On the child’s iPhone, use the sign-in options in Settings and enter the child’s Apple Account and password. Apple also documents signing in with a nearby Apple device. If the child does not yet have an account, the sign-in flow can offer a way to create a Child Account. Follow the prompts shown on the device; the available path can depend on the device and region. See Apple’s iPhone setup guide for the documented sign-in routes.

Review family controls after setup
After the account is in Family Sharing, the organizer or a parent or guardian can manage the child’s settings through the family controls. Apple lists options for app and website access, communication, device-use schedules, and content and privacy restrictions. Eligible purchases can also be subject to approval through Ask to Buy. Which settings appear can vary with the device, the child’s age, and the country or region.
Apple describes redesigned family controls in iOS 27, including quick actions, more flexible schedules and time limits, and ways to approve what a child can use. To use the redesigned experience, the relevant devices in the Family Sharing group must be updated to the applicable version 27 software. If every device cannot be updated, Apple says the earlier Screen Time and parental-control experience remains available, and settings can also be adjusted directly on the child’s device. See Apple’s parental controls guide and Family Sharing controls information for details.
