The Dallas Cowboys acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers, sending Pittsburgh a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. Dallas said injuries in its secondary informed the move. Porter brings three seasons of NFL experience, but his health and role in Dallas—and the deal’s eventual value—are not established by the trade announcements.
What did Dallas give up for Joey Porter Jr.?
The Cowboys agreed to the trade on September 30, 2026, and the Steelers confirmed the completed transaction on October 1. The official compensation is a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick going from Dallas to Pittsburgh.
| Team | Receives |
|---|---|
| Dallas Cowboys | Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. |
| Pittsburgh Steelers | Dallas’s 2027 sixth-round pick and 2028 second-round pick |
Those are the confirmed terms; the announcements do not disclose any additional conditions.
Why did the Cowboys make the trade?
Dallas cited injuries in its secondary as context for adding Porter. The team identified hamstring trouble for Cobie Durant and knee and ankle issues for Shavon Revel. Dallas characterized Porter as a high-level outside starter; that is the team’s assessment, not a guarantee of his future performance or role.

At the transaction level, Dallas exchanged a future second-round pick and a later sixth-round pick for an experienced cornerback, while Pittsburgh turned a player nearing the end of his rookie deal into draft assets. A fair judgment of the trade will depend on evidence that is not available in the announcements: Porter’s availability in Dallas, his eventual role and production, and any contract developments.
