GameGPU projects that a rumored PlayStation 6 processor based on Zen 6 could deliver up to 120% more IPC than the Zen 2-based CPU in the PS5. That figure is a model, not an official Sony or AMD specification, a direct console benchmark, or evidence that PS6 games will run 120% faster. Sony has not confirmed the PS6 CPU configuration in the reporting available as of October 3, 2026.

Where the 120% figure comes from

On October 3, 2026, GameGPU published a comparison projecting up to 120% more instructions per clock (IPC) for a Zen 6-based PS6 CPU than for the Zen 2-based PS5 CPU. GameGPU describes using hardware analogues because direct synthetic testing on closed console systems is unavailable. The figure should therefore be read as GameGPU’s modeled estimate, not a measured result from PS5 and PS6 hardware. GameGPU’s report is the source of the claim; its detailed simulation inputs and methodology could not be independently assessed.

Has Sony confirmed a Zen 6 PS6 processor?

No. Sony has not confirmed the PS6 CPU or a Zen 6/Zen 6c configuration in the reporting reviewed. A July 2026 MuyComputer report discusses an estimate of up to 50% IPC improvement for a rumored Zen 6c PS6 processor, but it also says the information is unconfirmed. That separate estimate does not establish the final console design or settle GameGPU’s different 120% projection.

An earlier set of alleged Orion specifications was reported by TechSpot as originating in a leaked AMD presentation dated 2023. TechSpot cautioned that details could change before production; the leak does not verify the eventual console’s configuration. TechSpot’s coverage is useful as background on the rumor, not as confirmation of a PS6 specification.

What AMD’s published IPC figures can—and cannot—show

AMD’s Zen architecture page publishes desktop IPC figures through Zen 5, but does not list a Zen 6 result. Its figures are tied to particular processors, workloads, and test conditions, so they do not validate GameGPU’s specific Zen 2-to-Zen 6 console projection.

Comparison AMD-published IPC figure Qualification
Zen 2 vs. original Zen About 15% Ryzen desktop comparison; AMD’s footnote references estimated SPECint_base2006 results.
Zen 3 vs. Zen 2 About 19% Ryzen desktop testing dated September 1, 2020; cited systems used 25 workloads at a locked 4 GHz.
Zen 4 vs. Zen 3 Up to 13% Ryzen desktop comparison; AMD does not date this figure on the architecture page.
Zen 5 vs. Zen 4 About 16% single-threaded Ryzen desktop testing as of May 2024, with configurations and workloads specified in AMD’s footnotes.
Zen 6 vs. Zen 2 in PS6 and PS5 Up to 120%, according to GameGPU Modeled console comparison published October 3, 2026; not an AMD figure or direct console measurement.

AMD explicitly warns that “Gen-over-gen IPC uplifts are not transitive and should not be chained, compounded, or otherwise aggregated to derive multi-generation comparisons.” In other words, adjacent-generation percentages from separate tests cannot simply be added or multiplied to produce a reliable Zen 2-to-Zen 6 result. AMD’s server-generation figures have additional comparison limits and do not supply a shortcut to a console-specific estimate.

Why 120% more IPC would not mean 120% faster games

IPC describes how many instructions a processor completes per clock cycle under a defined workload and measurement method. It is not a universal measure of total CPU speed. Actual throughput also depends on clock frequency and architectural details; game performance additionally depends on game code, GPU capacity, memory, power and thermal limits, and platform software.

As a result, even if the projected IPC difference were eventually supported by comparable tests, it would not translate directly into an equivalent increase in frame rate or game performance. No direct PS5-versus-PS6 benchmark is available in the cited sources, and GameGPU says direct synthetic testing on closed console systems is not possible.
