Apple’s iPhone Duo could help Samsung in two indirect ways. It can put book-style foldables in front of more shoppers, and it gives Samsung a strong reason to keep improving the Galaxy Z Fold 8. What it cannot yet do is show up in sales data. As of October 7, 2026, the sources reviewed for this article contain no evidence that the Duo has raised or lowered Fold 8 sales, and Apple says the Duo does not go on sale until October 23, 2026.

How a rival foldable can help Samsung

It widens the category’s visibility

Most people who buy a foldable first have to decide that they want one at all. A well-publicized launch from Apple, which has a large base of existing iPhone owners, can move foldables from a niche comparison into mainstream conversation. That kind of attention is a plausible benefit for Samsung, which has led the book-style category for years. The mechanism is awareness. Whether it turns into extra Fold 8 purchases is a separate question that nobody has measured yet.

It raises the bar for Samsung’s hardware and software

A competitor with a high-profile product gives reviewers and buyers a new reference point. Apple’s own product page describes the Duo this way: “iPhone Duo delivers the beloved iPhone experience in a foldable design, with a reimagined iOS 27 experience for new poses and orientations.” That is Apple’s positioning, not an independent finding, but it signals where Samsung will be measured: how well a foldable handles different postures, how smoothly the software adapts, and how durable the hardware feels in daily use.

It makes Samsung’s differences easier to explain

Buyers often struggle to tell foldables apart from spec sheets alone. Placing the Fold 8 beside a named rival gives its advantages a clear comparison point. The comparison works in both directions, as the trade-offs below show.

What the evidence does not show

The main claim in favor of the Duo helping Samsung is plausible, but it is not proven. Three limits matter.

  • No sales data exists yet. The Duo’s launch date is October 23, 2026, according to Apple’s product page. Any effect on Fold 8 sales would appear only after that date, and no post-release figures were available when this article was written.
  • Reader polls measure stated preference. A Tom’s Guide reader poll in 2026 drew 2,761 votes. 62% chose the Galaxy Z Fold 8, 23% chose the iPhone Duo, and 15% chose neither. The poll was self-selected among one publication’s readers, so it shows what those respondents preferred, not what the market is buying. See the Tom’s Guide poll.
  • Specifications come from the makers, and judgments come from reviewers. Apple and Samsung publish their own figures, and outlets such as Tom’s Guide and SamMobile report comparisons and impressions. Those are different kinds of evidence and should not be merged into one verdict.

Without independent sales or market-share data, the honest claim is that Apple’s entry could benefit Samsung by increasing attention to the category and pressure on Samsung’s product. It is not yet evidence that Samsung’s sales have grown because of it.

Where the trade-offs fall

Each phone has advantages that matter to different buyers. Neither one wins on every line.

Samsung’s strengths

  • Lighter body. By the figures cited above, the Fold 8 is 53 grams lighter than the Duo, which matters if you carry a foldable all day.
  • More multitasking options. Samsung reports three split-screen apps at once plus resizable pop-up windows, against Apple’s two-app Split View.
  • Desktop mode and stylus-free workflows. DeX is listed as a Fold 8 feature. Samsung also states that the Fold 8 does not support S Pen or FlexMode, so buyers who need either should not assume it is included.

Apple’s strengths

  • A higher dust rating on paper. Apple lists IP68 and Samsung lists IP48. Under the standard IP code, the first digit covers solid particles such as dust and the second covers water. Both codes share the same second digit, so the listed difference is on the dust side. Each maker tests under its own conditions, so the ratings should be read as manufacturer claims rather than a side-by-side lab result.
  • The iOS ecosystem. The Duo runs iOS 27, which Apple says includes a reimagined experience for new poses and orientations. If you already use an iPhone, that continuity may matter more than any spec.

What to check before choosing

  • Your local price and the storage tier you need, since the U.S. starting prices above exclude higher tiers.
  • Whether you can wait until October 23, 2026 for the Duo, if you want to compare it in person.
  • Whether you need three-app multitasking, desktop mode, or a stylus.
  • Your existing phone ecosystem. Switching platforms is a larger decision than choosing a foldable.
  • Case fit. Samsung says the Fold 8 supports magnet cases, but third-party fit should be checked before buying an accessory.

How to read the comparison

Apple’s entry is most likely to help Samsung by making book-style foldables more visible and by raising the standard Samsung’s engineers and marketers must meet. Samsung’s concrete advantages, including the lighter body and broader multitasking, remain specific and checkable. Whether the Duo changes Fold 8 sales is a question that only post-launch market data can answer, and the sources available today do not supply it.
