Google has confirmed that it is rolling out google.com/goto links in Search. Its public statement does not say whether those links change the referrer that reaches publisher websites, or whether they change how GA4 classifies organic visits. Redirects can cause missing traffic-source data in general, so organic traffic appearing as (direct) / (none) is worth checking. Nothing published so far shows that /goto is the cause.
What Google has confirmed
Google confirmed the rollout to Search Engine Roundtable. A Google spokesperson gave this explanation:
“We have a long history of deploying technical measures against evolving forms of abuse, and we regularly take steps to protect our services and users.”

Why a redirect can affect GA4 at all
GA4 labels a session (direct) / (none) when it has no clear referral source. Google’s documentation lists two common causes that matter here:
- Missing traffic-source information when the browser does not send a referrer.
- Redirects that strip URL parameters, such as campaign tags, before the landing page loads.
GA4 builds source and medium from campaign information and from the document referrer on the landing page. If an intermediate redirect removes either signal, the session arrives with less to classify, and it can fall into direct. That is the general mechanism. It is documented for redirects in general. Google has not stated that /goto strips a referrer or a parameter, so the mechanism is a possibility to test, not a finding.

What is not established
- Referrer handling: No public source says whether a visit that passes through
/gotokeeps the Google referrer on arrival. - Coverage: No source says whether behavior is consistent across browsers, regions, or Search result types.
- Measured impact: No published figure quantifies a shift in GA4 organic reporting linked to
/goto. - Redirect guidance: Google Search Central’s redirect documentation covers publishers moving their own URLs. It does not document Google’s Search
/gotorouting, so it cannot be used to predict how that routing behaves.
Until a site’s own data shows a pattern, organic traffic moving into direct should be treated as an open question, not as confirmed /goto damage.
How to check whether your organic traffic is affected
- Mark the change. Note the date the shift began and the landing pages involved. Pick a comparison window of similar length before the shift.
- Check GA4 by source and medium. Go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Change the dimension to Session source / medium, set the date range, and look for a drop in google / organic alongside a rise in (direct) / (none).
- Check the same pages in Search Console. Open Performance > Search results, set the same dates, and filter the Pages tab to the affected URLs. Compare the direction of clicks, not the raw totals.
- Break down the landing-page referrer. In GA4, open Explore, create a Free form exploration, and add Landing page, Session source / medium, and Page referrer as dimensions. Page referrer is the document referrer that GA4 receives on the landing page. If visits classified as direct show an empty Page referrer, the referrer was likely lost somewhere before the page loaded.
- Test a real visit. Search for a query that returns the affected page, click the result in a normal browser, and run
document.referrerin the browser console on the landing page. Record the exact value and the browser, region, and result type. Repeat in a second browser and, if possible, from a different region, because behavior may differ. - Verify in DebugView. Use Admin > DebugView with the GA4 debugger enabled to see how the session’s source fields are recorded during your test visit, and compare them with the referrer you captured.
Reading the results
- Referrer present and GA4 shows google / organic: The redirect did not change classification on that path. Check other browsers and regions before drawing a wider conclusion.
- Referrer empty and GA4 shows (direct) / (none), while Search Console clicks hold steady or rise: Source loss on that path is plausible. Record the browser, region, and result type where it occurs.
- Search Console clicks fall too: The change is more likely a ranking or demand shift than an attribution problem. Investigate Search Console performance first.
- Only some pages or regions are affected: Segment the data by landing page and country before deciding whether the problem is systemic.
Comparing GA4 sessions with Search Console clicks
The two reports measure different things, so they should be compared by direction and timing rather than expected to match.
| Aspect | Search Console | GA4 |
|---|---|---|
| What it counts | Clicks from Search to the site | Sessions and visitor interactions on the site |
| How traffic is attributed | Clicks from Search results | Source and medium from campaign information and the landing-page document referrer |
| Can totals match exactly? | Not expected, per Google’s explanation of the two systems | Not expected, per Google’s explanation of the two systems |
| Useful for this question because | Shows whether Search demand to the page changed | Shows how the visits were classified after they arrived |
What this means for reporting
The confirmed /goto rollout gives a plausible reason to check organic attribution, but it does not establish that it has changed GA4 reporting. Look for a matched pattern: direct sessions rising on specific landing pages, empty referrers on test visits, and Search Console clicks that hold steady. If that pattern appears, record the evidence and report it as a finding for your own site, not as a general Google change.
