Not yet. Colossal Biosciences says its artificial egg system has hatched 26 chickens, a result that could make incubation easier for future bird research. It has not hatched a moa or shown that a moa could be brought back. The system addresses only part of a much larger challenge involving genetic reconstruction, development, animal welfare and the environment a bird would need to live in.
What Colossal’s artificial egg has demonstrated
On May 19, 2026, Colossal announced that 26 chickens had hatched using its system. The company describes a silicone-based membrane held by a lattice or rigid cup. It says the membrane allows gas exchange while retaining moisture, and that the system worked without supplemental oxygen. Those are company-reported claims; the announcement was not peer-reviewed evidence. National Geographic’s account likewise describes the hatch announcement.
The process began with real, fertilized chicken eggs. Researchers opened them, moved their contents into the artificial shell structure and added calcium. In other words, the device provided a shell environment for development after fertilization; it did not create an embryo or replace every biological component of an egg. Some independent experts therefore describe it more precisely as an artificial eggshell or shell-less incubation system. National Geographic
The company says the design can work with standard incubators and be adapted to different sizes, but public reporting does not establish performance in other bird species or egg sizes. National Geographic also reported that Colossal had not released hatch rates that would allow comparison with earlier methods. The count of 26 chicks is not a hatch rate: without the number of eggs attempted and comparable conditions, it cannot show how reliably the system works.

Why a chicken hatch does not bring back a moa
The South Island giant moa (Dinornis robustus) was a large, flightless New Zealand bird. Science Media Centre New Zealand says giant moa were extinct by the mid-15th century, so “600 years” is a rounded description rather than an exact extinction date. Science Media Centre New Zealand
Colossal estimates that a moa egg was about 80 times the volume of a chicken egg and about eight times the volume of an emu egg. Those are the company’s estimates, not settled measurements. A larger artificial shell might help address the physical space needed for incubation, but it would not solve the other requirements for creating and raising a moa-like bird. Colossal’s announcement

Several scientific steps remain
A project to produce a moa-like bird would need a suitable living relative, reconstructed and edited genetic material, a way to produce genetically altered birds, and an incubation method able to support development at the required scale. It would also need evidence that the resulting animals develop and remain healthy. The sources describe these as unfinished challenges, not capabilities established by the chicken hatch.
Even if those obstacles were overcome, an animal engineered from a living relative would be a proxy, not the original extinct species restored. As Philip Seddon, Professor Emeritus in the University of Otago’s Department of Zoology, put it: “Genetic modification of a near relative of the moa could create an ecological proxy, but could not resurrect a moa.” Science Media Centre New Zealand

What the technology might mean for conservation
Experts say shell-less incubation could eventually help rescue compromised embryos, support captive breeding when natural eggs or surrogates are scarce, or provide researchers access to developing embryos. These are potential uses, not conservation outcomes demonstrated by the announcement.
Nic Rawlence, Associate Professor and Director of the Ancient Ecology Lab at the University of Otago, called the work impressive and potentially useful in a future conservation toolkit, while noting that the announcement came without data or a peer-reviewed publication. What would have to be shown next
The chicken hatch is an early engineering result. To judge whether the technology could contribute to a moa-like bird project, readers would need evidence that addresses distinct questions:
- Reliability: How many fertilized eggs were attempted, how many hatched, and how do those results compare with established incubation methods?
- Generality: Does the system work beyond chickens, including with different species and egg sizes?
- Scale and development: Can a system accommodate the estimated size and developmental needs of a moa egg?
- Genetics and health: Can researchers create an appropriate engineered bird and show that it develops and remains healthy?
- Welfare and ecological fit: Could the bird live well, and would any proposed conservation or release plan be suitable for the ecosystem?
Dusko Ilic, Professor of Stem Cell Sciences at King’s College London, has stressed that recreating an extinct species would require much more than an incubation platform, including appropriate development, physiology, behaviour, welfare and ecological context. He added that the outcome would likely be an engineered proxy rather than a true restoration. Science Media Centre New Zealand Science Media Centre New Zealand experts also raise social and iwi opposition to the moa project, underscoring that welfare and ecological questions are not the only considerations.
