An engineered marine bacterium called VCOD-15 reduced five pollutant concentrations to 2% of their initial levels in contained wastewater and saline-soil experiments, according to a 2025 report on research published in Nature. That is a promising research result, not evidence that the microbe has cleaned an open-ocean oil spill or is ready for environmental release.
What is VCOD-15, and what pollutants did it target?
VCOD-15 is a genetically engineered strain of the marine bacterium Vibrio natriegens. Cong Su and colleagues’ 2025 Nature paper, DOI 10.1038/s41586-025-08947-7, is described in a Chemistry World account as targeting five pollutants:
- Biphenyl
- Phenol
- Naphthalene
- Dibenzofuran
- Toluene
These are pollutants associated with petroleum contamination, but success against these selected compounds does not establish that the strain can remove every component of crude oil or handle the complexity of a real spill.
What did the experiments show?
The reported work included initial flask tests, experiments using industrial wastewater in activated-sludge bioreactors, and tests in saline soil using a pot array. Across the described experiments, concentrations of the five target pollutants fell to 2% of their initial levels. This is a concentration result in those experimental settings, not a measured cleanup rate for an ocean, shoreline, or field spill.

- ZORBENT IS THE SAFEST, FASTEST SPILL ULTRA ABSORBENT POWDER EVER! Does this sound familiar – running late, disaster strikes! You are staring at a giant disgusting pet mess and massive vomit all over the floor? Zorbent to the rescue! Gone in seconds with no residue, dust or odor. Keep reading!
- 16X MORE ABSORBANT than other powders, heavy bags of clay or cat litter. Zorbent works on all surfaces - tile, carpet, concrete, steel, wood, even porous and rough surfaces. Easily removes all liquids like water, juice, urine, vomit, blood, BBQ sauce, oil and a lot more.
- ZORBENT IS ENVIROMENTALLY SAFE AND NON-TOXIC – Zorbent was originally developed to help clean up the Rocky Flats Nuclear plant in Colorado, removing 1.3 million cubic meters of waste. The formulation had to be 100% environmentally safe, non-toxic, non-hazardous, and non-irritating. That same formulation safely cleans up household messes today.
- SUPER EASY TO APPLY AND REUSABLE – Just pour, mix and sweep! Zorbent’s propriety formula quickly encases and soaks up all liquids, leaving surfaces clean and dry. Mix until the mess is absorbed then sweep. Zorbent is the ONLY reusable spill power! Keep using until the powder is fully absorbed. Each 5 qt jug absorbs up to 1 gallon.
- ZORBENT IS LIKE HAVING A PERSONAL CLEAN-UP GENIE in every 5 qt container! Never say “Oh No!” again. Just take out Zorbent and put it to work, and in a jiffy, the surface is clean, dry, dust and odor free. Store an extra container in your garage and car and always have the Genie handy. Proudly made in the USA.
The report says VCOD-15 converted the pollutants into salicylic acid, catechol, and benzoic acid. Other bacteria present in the wastewater or soil then metabolized these intermediates. The account does not establish that VCOD-15 alone fully mineralized the pollutants into simpler inorganic products; further metabolic engineering for complete mineralization remains a stated goal.
Has VCOD-15 been tested in the ocean?
The reported experiments were in flasks, a wastewater bioreactor, and a saline-soil pot array. They do not demonstrate cleanup in open water or on an oil-contaminated shoreline. The study author, Hongzhi Tang, described an intended approach using the bacterium in a closed treatment container and filtering it out at the outlet.

- Universal spill kit provides two absorbent socks, 15 absorbent pads, an LDPE disposal bag, and a pail for use in the containment, cleanup, and disposal of water-based and oil-based nonacid liquids on land; 5-gallon maximum absorption capacity
- Two 4' absorbent socks with polypropylene skins and filled with polymeric foam to absorb liquid
- Socks are flexible to fit tight spaces, wrap around corners or machinery, and encompass spills to form a barrier that helps keep liquid from spreading
- 15 absorbent perforated pads made of chemically inert polypropylene and heat-bonded for strength
- 5-gallon polyethylene pail has a locking lid and handle for storing and transporting spill containment supplies
That distinction matters: a controlled treatment system can contain and recover a microorganism, while an open spill site exposes it to changing conditions and an existing ecosystem. Evidence that native microbes respond to oil contamination is not evidence that VCOD-15 works in the sea. For example, a study of the 2024 Marine Honour spill in Singapore tracked natural microbial and hydrocarbon changes over 185 days, with responses differing by site and oiling intensity; it did not test VCOD-15 (study of the Marine Honour spill).
Is the engineered bacterium safe to release?
The reported work does not establish that open environmental release is safe. VCOD-15 carries a chloramphenicol-resistance gene, and deployment would also need to address whether the organism could persist outside a treatment site and how it might affect native microbial communities. Tang’s stated plan was closed-container treatment with filtration to recover the strain, not dispersal into a spill area.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies persistence outside the application site and effects on native microbial communities as unresolved concerns for open-release use of engineered microbes (EPA overview of biotechnology and microbial pesticides). These are U.S. regulatory and risk considerations, not a universal account of laws in every country. More broadly, the U.S. Government Accountability Office reported in July 2026 that testing infrastructure and standards, regulatory uncertainty, and public concerns remain obstacles to environmental uses of engineered microbes (GAO assessment).
How does this differ from established bioremediation approaches?
Bioremediation can mean using microbes already present at a contaminated site, rather than adding an engineered organism. After the Exxon Valdez spill, the EPA described a small-scale feasibility test and an approved proposal to add nutrients to shorelines to stimulate native bacteria that degrade oil (EPA account of the Exxon Valdez bioremediation work). A 2022 marine study also described a constructed consortium of indigenous bacteria, not VCOD-15 (2022 study of an indigenous bacterial consortium).

These approaches differ in what is introduced and how it is managed. Nutrient enhancement aims to encourage organisms already present; VCOD-15 is an engineered strain whose reported application concept involves contained treatment and recovery. The available evidence does not establish that VCOD-15 is superior to nutrient enhancement, mechanical recovery, or other remediation methods.

Is VCOD-15 available as a cleanup product?
No commercial availability is established. In July 2026, the GAO reported that it had identified no commercially available engineered microbes for waste cleanup. The VCOD-15 work is therefore best understood as research toward possible contained treatment, not a product that operators can currently buy for an oil spill.
