There is no direct evidence that AI-assisted or AI-generated game ports have cut Nintendo’s or Sony’s remaster sales or revenue. Sony has described using AI in development workflows and platform discovery, but not AI autonomously converting older games into commercial ports. The threat is a plausible question about future competition—not an established cause of lost sales.
Can AI make a port of an old game?
AI tools can assist parts of game production, but the available company statements do not show that they can independently turn a specific older game into a finished, commercially released port. Sony’s May 8, 2026 corporate strategy describes AI tools in its studios automating repetitive work in software engineering, quality assurance, 3D modelling, and animation. It also describes AI as supporting platform efficiency, personalization, and player discovery. Those are documented uses; they are not a disclosure of an AI-generated port.

Sony Group President and CEO Hiroki Totoki said, “AI is not a replacement for artists or creators.” That statement describes Sony’s view of AI’s role, not a guarantee about every future game workflow.
Would an AI port replace a remaster?
Potentially, if AI-assisted tools made it substantially cheaper or faster to adapt a game for new hardware and the resulting release met players’ expectations. But a port and a remaster are not automatically interchangeable. A port generally makes a game run on another platform; a remaster may also change presentation, add options, or improve quality of life. What each release actually does varies by title.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
There is no AI-port product or sales comparison in the available evidence that would let readers measure this competition today. To assess a real release, compare:
- Authorization and rights: whether the release is authorized by the rights holder. AI involvement alone does not establish whether a port is authorized.
- Platforms and compatibility: which systems are supported and whether the game works reliably on them.
- Fidelity and changes: how closely it preserves the original and whether it adds visual, accessibility, or quality-of-life improvements.
- Support and preservation: who is responsible for updates, and whether the release preserves the game’s behavior and content.
- Price and uptake: what it costs and whether players buy it. An announcement or technical demonstration is not evidence of commercial success.
What does Sony’s remaster business show?
Sony’s 2025 Corporate Report presents remakes and remasters as one part of a broader strategy for extending the value of game franchises. It says The Last of Us began in 2013, The Last of Us Part I received a ground-up remake for PS5 in 2022, and The Last of Us Part II was remastered for PS5 in 2024. The report also notes PC versions of both games.

- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Sony reported more than 37 million cumulative sales for The Last of Us franchise. That is a total across the franchise’s releases, not a sales figure for either remaster or a measure of remaster revenue. The same report describes television adaptation, merchandising, and location-based entertainment alongside games as ways of extending franchise value; it does not isolate the profitability of any one route.
Does Nintendo say AI ports threaten its sales?
Not in the cited statement. Nintendo’s UK legal FAQ addresses piracy, saying: “Piracy continues to be a significant threat to Nintendo’s business, as well as to the businesses of thousands of game development companies that work to provide games for Nintendo systems.” The page links that concern to piracy and legitimate sales; it does not identify AI ports as piracy or discuss AI ports as a separate threat.

Whether a particular port is authorized depends on rights and permission, not simply on whether AI tools were used to make it. Nintendo’s stated position on piracy therefore should not be presented as evidence that AI ports have taken sales from its remasters.
Are publishers still announcing authorized remakes and remasters?
Yes. Announcements show that publishers continue to pursue these releases, although they do not establish sales, margins, or consumer preference.

What does the AI game-supply research tell us?
A July 2026 arXiv preprint considers possible growth in game supply associated with AI-assisted production. Its abstract describes a Steam metadata snapshot of 93,073 titles and a dataset of 200,000 interactions. These are inputs to that study—not counts of AI-made games or ports across the market. The paper concerns marketplace supply and discovery, not Nintendo or Sony remaster revenue or whether AI ports caused consumers to substitute away from remasters. As a preprint, it should be treated as early research rather than settled industry evidence.
So, are AI game ports hurting Nintendo or Sony?
The evidence available here does not establish that they are. Sony has disclosed AI-assisted studio workflows and platform features, Nintendo’s cited statement concerns piracy, and publishers are still announcing authorized remakes and remasters. None of those facts demonstrates that AI ports have displaced a Nintendo or Sony remaster or reduced its revenue.
The commercial risk is worth watching if AI tools eventually make authorized adaptations cheaper or if competing releases draw players away. Establishing that this is already happening would require title-level sales evidence, a company disclosure, or a credible causal comparison. No such evidence is available here.
