A titanium carbide MXene coating showed exceptionally low friction in a laboratory test, and adding graphene reduced friction and wear further. That makes the material a promising research lead for rover mechanisms—not an established rover lubricant: the reported tests used a controlled dry-nitrogen environment, not a wheel operating on Mars.
What material did researchers test?
In a 2021 study, Huang, Mutyala, Sumant and Mochalin tested a coating made from Ti3C2, a two-dimensional titanium carbide in the MXene family. They also tested a composite coating that added graphene to the MXene. These were deposited coatings, not oils or greases applied to a rover wheel.
The work, “Achieving superlubricity with 2D transition metal carbides (MXenes) and MXene/graphene coatings,” appeared in Materials Today Advances, volume 9, article 100133, in March 2021. Read the study.

The researchers used a ball-on-disc tribometer: a diamond-like-carbon-coated steel ball slid against the coated substrate in dry nitrogen. For Ti3C2 alone, they reported a friction coefficient of 0.0067 ± 0.0017. Adding graphene reduced friction by 37.3% and wear by a factor of two compared with the MXene coating alone; the composite retained the reported superlubricity behavior.

| Coating tested | Reported friction result | Reported wear result | Superlubricity behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ti3C2 MXene | Friction coefficient 0.0067 ± 0.0017 in dry nitrogen | Not stated as an absolute value in the cited study summary | Reported |
| Ti3C2 MXene with graphene | 37.3% lower than Ti3C2 alone | Two times lower than Ti3C2 alone | Retained |
These figures describe the study’s laboratory comparison, not a measurement of rover-wheel performance. “Superlubricity” here refers to the very low friction reported under the experiment’s conditions.
Why might this interest rover engineers?
Rover mechanisms must work far from routine servicing, so reducing friction and wear is attractive. The research connection is motivated by the possibility of a wheel lubricant failing during a mission. Coating a contact surface with a low-friction material could be relevant to that engineering problem, but the study tested a specific coated contact in a tribometer rather than a rover wheel assembly.

Dry, oxygen-poor conditions are part of the rationale, but do not by themselves make the result a Mars-ready solution. Chemistry World reported that the tests were performed in dry nitrogen to limit humidity, and that MXenes can be susceptible to hydrolysis and reactions with oxygen. Study co-author Vadym Mochalin described protection from wet-air exposure, potentially using graphene, as a possible direction. That is a proposed mitigation, not demonstrated protection across rover operating conditions. Chemistry World’s report on the study.
What remains unknown before a rover could use it?
The cited study and report do not establish field testing on a rover or flight qualification. They also do not demonstrate service life in a wheel, resistance to launch and landing, performance under Martian dust or temperature cycling, or equivalence between the lab contact loads and rover hardware. Those are distinct engineering questions that the friction result alone cannot answer.

The mechanism behind the low friction is also not settled. Mochalin said: “We hypothesised about a few mechanisms, which can be related to functional groups on MXene surfaces and intercalated species, as well as the nature of the material itself, but at this stage there is little we can say with certainty.”

No. A separate 2020 study examined degraded black phosphorus against silica and implicated a mobile water layer. That is a different material interface and does not establish how the MXene coating works. PubMed record for the black-phosphorus study.
