Yes—if your router is unpowered or behaving erratically, trying a known-working outlet is a quick diagnostic worth doing before assuming the router has failed. ASUS and TP-Link both include an outlet check in their troubleshooting guidance. But a router that has power and Wi-Fi while losing internet needs a different set of checks.
There is no verified account here of a particular router taking a week to fix, so this guide treats the outlet as a practical troubleshooting step—not a confirmed explanation for every disconnection.
First, identify what is actually failing
Before unplugging anything, note the symptom. A router with no power light, one that repeatedly restarts, a Wi-Fi network that appears but has no internet, and a single device that cannot connect are different problems.
- No power or repeated restarts: Check the power source, adapter, cable, and model-specific controls.
- Wi-Fi works but there is no internet: Check whether the problem affects one device or all devices, then inspect the modem and router status.
- Only one device is affected: Troubleshoot that device’s connection before concluding the router or internet service is down.
If the router appears unpowered or unstable
Try a known-working outlet
Move the router’s power adapter to another outlet you know works. This is a diagnostic check: if the router behaves normally there, the original outlet or power strip may be involved. ASUS recommends trying another outlet or extension cord, and TP-Link includes another-outlet testing in its no-LED checks. Take care when checking power connections; do not open electrical equipment.

Check the adapter and cable
Make sure the adapter is firmly seated both at the wall and at the router. Look over the cable for visible damage. Use the adapter supplied with the router: NETGEAR warns that a different adapter may not work correctly, and power requirements vary by model. Do not substitute an adapter simply because its plug fits.
Confirm the buttons and lights for your model
Router lights and controls are not universal. Check the exact model’s manual or support guide to confirm what its LEDs mean and whether a power or LED control is enabled. A dark Wi-Fi light, for example, does not by itself establish that the router has lost power.

If there is still no LED after checking the outlet, supplied adapter, and model-specific controls, note the router model and hardware details and contact the manufacturer’s support. TP-Link recommends escalation when its no-LED checks do not resolve the symptom.
If the router has power but there is no internet
See whether one device or all devices are affected
If only one device cannot connect, the fault may be limited to that device. If every device is offline, check the modem and router status lights and look for an ISP outage notice. No internet access does not automatically mean the router has lost power or failed.

Restart separate modem and router units in order
If you have a separate modem and router, restarting them temporarily disconnects people using the network. Power-cycle the modem first and wait for it to establish its connection to the ISP; then power on the router. The time needed for connection lights to stabilize varies by device, so use the modem’s guide rather than assuming a fixed wait.
Check whether the modem or ISP is the problem
If a computer connected directly to the modem still cannot connect, TP-Link’s guidance points toward the modem or ISP rather than the router. Check for a local service outage, then contact the ISP or modem provider if the connection remains unavailable.

How to interpret the outlet test
If changing outlets restores stable power, that is useful evidence about the power source; it does not prove that the router itself is otherwise fault-free. If the router still has no lights on a known-working outlet with its supplied adapter, use the model’s support guidance and contact the manufacturer rather than buying a generic replacement adapter. If the lights indicate power but devices have no internet, continue with the modem, device, and ISP checks instead.
