There is no universal cost winner: a used ThinkPad is cheaper only if its purchase cost, measured electricity use, and upkeep work out below a cloud VM’s full bill for the same period and workload. To compare fairly, use your laptop’s actual power draw and electricity tariff, then price a VM in a specified region with compute, storage, and data transfer included. Neither option’s cost alone proves it can reliably encode and deliver your chosen stream.

What to include in the comparison

Choose a shared comparison period—12 months is a useful editorial assumption, not a sourced standard—and compare costs over that same period. Separate one-time and recurring expenses, and record the workload and location so the result can be recalculated when prices or circumstances change.

Option Cost inputs Operational questions
Used ThinkPad Purchase price allocated across the chosen ownership period; measured average running power converted to kilowatt-hours; local electricity rate; any incremental internet or cooling cost. Add a repair or replacement allowance only if you choose and explain an evidence-based amount. Can this particular machine sustain the selected resolution and frame rate? Can its internet connection and power stay available? Who will monitor and restart the stream if something fails?
Cloud VM Instance price for the time it runs, plus storage, outbound data transfer, public IP, and any other selected services or fees. Does the chosen instance sustain the encoding workload? What software will you configure and maintain? How will you monitor and recover the stream?

The ThinkPad cost depends on its actual condition and measured draw, not the model name alone. The VM cost depends on provider, region, operating system, instance type, utilization, and billing for associated services. There is no independently published statistic establishing a general monthly cost winner for this comparison.

Estimate the ThinkPad’s 24/7 electricity cost

Measure average wall power while the laptop is doing the intended work, including encoding and streaming. A model-specific figure cannot be assumed: the machine’s configuration, condition, workload, and peripherals can all affect the result. A plug-in electricity meter can provide a practical measurement; use a representative period rather than relying on an idle reading.

Lenovo Thinkpad T14 (Gen 1) 14" Laptop, i5 10310U 1.7Ghz, 16GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe SSD, 1080p Full HD, Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, Webcam, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • Fresh install and activated Windows 11 with zero bloatware. Windows 11 will be activated via your unit's unique digital license and ready to go right out of the box.
  • Intel Quad Core i5 10th Generation 10310U (1.70 GHz)
  • 16 GB DDR4 RAM | 512GB NVMe SSD
  • 14" 1080p Full HD screen | USB-C Thunderbolt 3 Port
  1. Measure average watts. Run the intended stream workload and record average power at the wall. Include any equipment whose electricity you are counting.
  2. Convert to energy. For continuous operation, monthly energy in kWh is average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours in the month. For a 30-day planning month, that is average watts ÷ 1,000 × 720.
  3. Apply your tariff. Multiply kWh by your local electricity price per kWh. Use the rate that applies to your household, including relevant variable charges if you intend to count them.
  4. Add ownership cost. Allocate the purchase price across the period you have chosen. If you include incremental internet, cooling, repairs, or replacement, state those assumptions separately.

For example, if a measured setup averages W watts and electricity costs R per kWh, its 30-day electricity estimate is (W ÷ 1,000 × 720) × R. Replace W and R with your measurements and tariff; there is no verified universal ThinkPad wattage or electricity rate to insert.

Estimate the cloud VM’s full bill

A VM’s advertised or headline compute rate is not necessarily the total price of a continuous stream. Price the specific configuration and include all resources the deployment will use.

AWS describes On-Demand EC2 billing by instance time and documents additional cost areas such as data transfer and EBS. Its estimate inputs include region, operating system, instance type, expected utilization, storage, transfer, and elastic IP options. Build a quote from your own settings using AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing and the AWS estimate inputs; do not treat one region’s or instance’s quote as universal.

Set a workload the two options can actually be compared against

Before comparing prices, decide what the stream must deliver. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 ingestion bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are recommended input bitrates, not evidence that any unspecified laptop or VM can encode the workload.

  • Test with audio and motion representative of the actual content, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
  • Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, and content assumptions when testing the laptop and sizing the VM.

See YouTube’s encoder settings for its guidance. YouTube says users can stream with software encoding on a computer or a hardware encoder in its encoder setup guide. That guide also says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours and streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that an individual channel should or can keep one stream open indefinitely, so plan a continuous broadcast with the channel’s requirements and YouTube’s current guidance in mind.

Find the break-even point for your own numbers

Once you have both totals for the same period, the comparison is straightforward. Let H be the ThinkPad purchase cost allocated to that period, E its measured electricity cost, and I any other home costs you are counting. Let V be the VM’s full bill, including compute and related charges. The home total is H + E + I; the VM total is V. The lower total is cheaper under those assumptions, not necessarily more reliable or easier to operate.

  • [Renewed] - The power supply and charger of refurbished products may not be original, but they are compatible with the computer and fully functional. The product is delivered in an ordinary packaging box, not the original packaging box.

To find the electricity-rate break-even point, let K be the ThinkPad’s measured kWh over the period. If H, I, and V are fixed, the two totals are equal when the electricity rate is (V − H − I) ÷ K. If that result is negative, the home setup’s non-electricity costs already exceed the VM bill under the stated assumptions. You can also solve for the VM break-even bill by adding the ThinkPad’s allocated purchase, electricity, and other counted costs.

Keep the inputs visible: ownership period, measured watts, hours counted, tariff, purchase allocation, VM region and instance, and storage and transfer assumptions. This makes the estimate useful even when a provider changes prices or you replace a component.

Cost is only one part of the decision

  • Choose the ThinkPad route if you already own a suitable machine, can verify it sustains the workload, and accept keeping it powered, connected, monitored, and maintained.
  • Choose a VM if you are comfortable configuring and maintaining the streaming software and want the machine running in a provider’s cloud rather than at home. A VM still needs sizing, cost control, monitoring, and recovery planning.
  • Compare operational effort honestly. Home power or internet outages can interrupt a local setup; a VM removes those specific home dependencies but does not make the stream maintenance-free. No comparative reliability test establishes one option as more dependable in general.

Managed cloud streaming is a different kind of option

A managed service is not a general-purpose VM and should not be priced as if it were one. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, for example, describes managed encoding billed by active channel duration and input/output resolution; see Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing. A specialist cloud playout service may package capabilities beyond VM compute, so compare its stated scope and billing model separately.

StreamNeo is another option for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube. Its published cost guides discuss compute, electricity, bandwidth, and monitoring as cost factors, but those are vendor materials rather than independent comparisons of a ThinkPad and a VM. A promotional figure from a vendor page should not be substituted for the cost of either setup; calculate your own scenarios from their actual inputs.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support.
