There is no universal winner: compare the VPS plan’s current monthly price with your desktop’s measured electricity use at your local power rate, then account for whether either option can reliably encode and upload your stream. Akamai’s North America pricing page lists a 1 GB Nanode at $5/month, but its low price does not establish that it has enough sustained CPU for your encoding workload. A spare desktop may cost less in cash if it is already owned and its electricity is cheap; a VPS avoids keeping that computer and home connection running, but still needs suitable compute, network capacity, and recovery monitoring.
How to compare the monthly cost
Use recurring costs that are specific to your location and setup. For a clear baseline, compare one selected VPS instance with the electricity consumed by a desktop over the same period. Use 720 hours as an illustrative 30-day month; for another billing period, substitute its actual hours.

Akamai’s North America pricing page lists the Nanode 1 GB at $5/month or $0.0075/hour, with 1 GB RAM, one CPU, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. These are region-specific listed figures, not a guarantee of availability or price elsewhere; confirm the selected region’s current plan details on Akamai’s pricing page.

Measure the desktop rather than guessing
Use a plug-in electricity monitor if you do not know the desktop’s draw at the wall. Measure while the machine runs the intended stream, since idle consumption may not represent encoding, playback, or other equipment left on for 24/7 operation. Multiply average watts by the hours in the billing period, divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your electricity rate per kWh. The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes electricity prices by state and end-use sector; use the tariff that actually applies to your home, not a national figure as a substitute.

If your home internet plan is already paid for, its bill may not increase just because you stream. Still, consider whether it has sufficient upload capacity and reliability; add only genuine incremental costs to the desktop total.
Find your electricity-only break-even point
To calculate the desktop’s wall draw at which electricity alone equals a chosen VPS price, use: VPS monthly price ÷ (monthly hours × electricity price per kWh) × 1,000 = break-even watts. Enter the current price for your selected plan and your local electricity rate. This is not a universal wattage: the result changes with both inputs, and it excludes any incremental internet or hardware costs.

Can the lowest-cost VPS encode your stream?
Do not treat a low VPS price as proof that it can run the stream. The North America Nanode listing specifies one CPU and 1 GB of RAM; whether that is enough depends on the video, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and workload. Akamai describes shared CPU as burstable: short bursts can reach 100%, but its guidance says average sustained use should remain below 80%, including virtualization overhead. Match the encoder to YouTube’s settings
YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. For H.264 video, its current bitrate table recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 14 Mbps at 1080p60, 3 Mbps at 720p30, and 8 Mbps at 720p60. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, and CBR among its encoder settings. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular VPS can encode them. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and test with the actual content, audio, movement, resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings you plan to use.

For pre-rendered video, you may be able to avoid real-time encoding by sending a compatible prepared file, depending on your chosen streaming software. If you are encoding live on the VPS, benchmark CPU use over a representative period and watch for dropped frames or stream-health warnings. Do not assume a burst of adequate performance means the instance can sustain the load.

Both setups need enough upload capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams, and using a reliable connection. For example, calculate the total bitrate you will send, include any backup feed, and then allow that recommended margin. The relevant connection is the VPS’s network path or your home internet’s upload—not its download speed. YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips explain testing and upload capacity.

A VPS removes dependence on the desktop’s power and home internet, but an instance can still encounter process failures, reboots, network problems, or resource contention. Plan for process supervision, reconnect behavior, monitoring, and replacement media. A desktop has different failure points: local power, home internet, operating-system updates, and the computer itself. Neither option is hands-off merely because it can run for long periods.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
A stream that runs continuously is not necessarily preserved as one YouTube archive. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local archive backup. If a recording matters, arrange a separate local recording or other backup and structure sessions with this limit in mind. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance before relying on the live replay as your only copy.

Before committing, test the complete chain at the intended resolution and frame rate, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and check the actual recurring costs. For a VPS, test sustained CPU rather than relying on a brief successful launch. For a desktop, measure wall draw during streaming rather than using a generic wattage estimate.
