If you’re about to paste a code fragment or command for the second time, give it a name and save it as a searchable snippet. That simple habit turns copy-paste from a hunt through old chats, notes, and shell history into a repeatable workflow.
When should you save a snippet?
Use the second-paste rule: if you are about to reuse something you already copied once, save it under a memorable name. The name gives you a reliable way to find it later instead of relying on where you last saw it or whether you can reconstruct it from memory.
Names work best when they describe the task. For example, prod-logs is easier to recognize than an unexplained filename or a vague label such as command2. Add a language tag when it helps distinguish formats; examples include js, sh, sql, and yaml.

In his DEV Community article, ke jia describes snippetx, a terminal-based tool for saving and retrieving snippets. The workflow uses standard input and output: send text into the tool to save it, search the saved library by term, and print a chosen snippet when you need it. That output can be copied to a clipboard or passed to another command.

To put output on a clipboard, it names pbcopy on macOS, clip.exe on Windows, and xclip on Linux. What belongs in a searchable library?
Save small pieces of text you expect to reuse: a health-route fragment, a Kubernetes log command, or another recurring code or command-line pattern. Give each item a name that reflects when or why you use it, then add a language tag if that makes browsing clearer.

Why choose local storage—and what does it leave out?
Jia presents snippetx as a zero-dependency terminal manager implemented in a single Node.js file, storing snippets locally without a server or account and not phoning home. Those are the author’s product claims; they have not been independently confirmed against a current package or repository page.
A local, terminal-first library suits a workflow built around shell commands and offline access. The trade-off is that local storage without synchronization does not give you automatic cross-device access. A cloud service may better suit someone who needs syncing, a graphical or mobile interface, or collaboration; the article does not establish that every cloud service offers the same capabilities.

What one person’s use can—and cannot—tell you
Jia reports using about 200 entries after a few months and says the top 20 accounted for 90% of his lookups. He also estimates that saving a snippet takes about two seconds. These figures describe his personal experience, not a general measurement of developer habits or a comparative performance test.

The useful takeaway is the workflow, not the percentages: start with the handful of snippets you repeatedly reach for, name them clearly, and save the next item when a second paste is coming.
