To copy files from a microSD card to a Chromebook, connect the card, open the Files app, select the card in the left sidebar, then drag the files or folders you want to My files or another destination. Your Chromebook needs a built-in microSD slot or a card reader that fits one of its ports.
What you need before you start
- A microSD slot or compatible reader: Chromebook models differ. Check your model’s ports; if it has no microSD slot, use a card reader or adapter that matches an available port. Google lists SD and microSD cards and adapters as compatible peripheral categories, but does not say every Chromebook has a built-in slot. Google’s external-device guidance and Chromebook setup instructions cover these options.
- A readable card format: ChromeOS supports FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, MTP, journaled HFS+ in read-only mode, ISO9660 in read-only mode, and UDF in read-only mode. The read-only formats allow access without writing changes to the storage.
- Access to the destination: Decide whether you want a local copy in My files or another folder before you begin. A managed school or work Chromebook may restrict external-device access.
Copy files from the card in the Files app
- Insert the microSD card into the Chromebook, or connect it through a compatible reader.
- Open the Launcher and select Files.
- In the Files app’s left sidebar, select the card’s name. Browse to the files or folders you want.
- Select the items and drag them to My files or the destination folder. Google’s Chromebook migration instructions describe copying files from a storage device to My files this way.
- Wait for copying to finish. Open the destination folder and try opening a copied file to confirm it is present and readable.
- In Files, select Eject for the card or reader before physically removing it.
If the card does not appear
Check the connection and Chromebook model
Make sure the card is seated in the slot or the reader is firmly connected. If you are using an adapter, verify that its connector matches a port on your Chromebook. A model without a built-in microSD slot requires a reader or another transfer route.
Check filesystem support and ChromeOS
If ChromeOS reports that the storage device is unsupported, check whether its filesystem is on Google’s supported list above and make sure ChromeOS is up to date. Google’s external-device troubleshooting guidance recommends checking file-format support and using the latest ChromeOS version.

Use another computer and cloud storage if needed
If the Chromebook still cannot read the card, connect it to another computer that can. Upload the files to a cloud file system such as Google Drive, then access them from the Chromebook. This route requires an internet connection and gives you an online copy; download the files on the Chromebook if you need them stored locally.

Do not format before protecting the files
Reformatting can resolve an unrecognized device or an unmountable partition, but it erases the card. If the files matter, first try to copy them using another computer or another safe method. Format only after backing up anything you need. Google discusses formatting as a possible remedy in its external-storage help.
If a copied file will not open
A file that transferred successfully but will not open is different from a card that failed to mount. The Chromebook may not support that file type or may need a suitable web application. Google lists compatible media and document types in its Chromebook file and device guidance; for an unsupported type, try an appropriate web app or access the file through cloud storage.

When access is blocked on a school or work Chromebook
Organizations can apply administrator restrictions to external devices or files, and settings vary by organization. If the card is not accessible on a managed Chromebook, ask the school or workplace administrator whether external storage is allowed.
