Coolify gives you a PaaS-like way to deploy and manage applications, databases, and services on Linux servers you control. It handles much of the deployment workflow—such as Docker builds, domains, HTTPS, logs, and health checks—but it is a control plane, not hosting: you still provide and secure the workload servers and remain responsible for their operation.

What Coolify manages—and what stays yours

Coolify connects to Linux servers over SSH and coordinates Docker-based deployments. In Coolify, a resource belongs to a project and environment, and runs on a connected server. Depending on the resource, Coolify can build or pull an image, start containers, configure routing, and provide controls for environment variables, storage, domains, health checks, logs, deployments, and lifecycle actions. See Coolify’s product documentation.

The distinction matters: Coolify manages deployment operations, while the application and its containers run on infrastructure you provide. You still choose and pay for servers, manage operating-system updates, SSH access, firewall rules, DNS, secrets, workload security, monitoring, backups, and restoration. Self-hosting adds the Coolify control plane itself to that list.

What can you deploy with Coolify?

Applications

Coolify supports several ways to supply an application: a Git repository, a Dockerfile without Git, a Docker Compose file in a Git repository, or an existing Docker image. The appropriate route depends on how the software is packaged and where its source or image is available. The applications documentation describes the available deployment workflows.

Databases and services

The database guide lists PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Redis, Dragonfly, KeyDB, and ClickHouse. Database backup capabilities differ by engine:

Database engines Documented scheduled dump jobs
PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, ClickHouse Listed in Coolify’s database guide
Redis, Dragonfly, KeyDB Not listed; persistent storage is available, but the documented scheduled database-backup workflow is not

Persistent storage helps data survive container recreation; it is not, by itself, a backup or recovery plan. Check the database documentation for the current engine-specific options, and arrange an independent backup and tested restore process where needed.

What server do you need for Coolify?

Coolify’s self-hosting guide states a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB of free disk space to run the Coolify control plane. Coolify published this minimum in documentation observed on October 4, 2026; it is not a capacity recommendation for your applications, databases, builds, images, or backups. Those workloads need additional resources, and the amount depends on what you run. See the self-hosting requirements.

The guide allows a VPS, dedicated server, Linux virtual machine, 64-bit Raspberry Pi setup, spare laptop, or another Linux device with SSH access. It lists amd64 and arm64 architectures and supported Linux distribution families. A mini PC or other local Linux machine can therefore be an option, but plan for workload capacity and storage growth rather than sizing it only to the control-plane minimum. Coolify recommends starting with a fresh server to avoid conflicts. Its validation may install Docker and restart it, which can interrupt containers already running on that server. Details are in the server documentation.

Choose where builds and workloads run

A new self-hosted installation starts with a localhost server, which can also run deployed resources. For production, you may prefer a separate server so application activity does not compete with the dashboard. An optional build server can take on image builds, but it cannot host the deployed resources themselves. These are design choices: separating roles adds infrastructure and is not a universal requirement. Coolify explains the roles in its server overview.

How do you self-host Coolify?

The basic process is to install the control plane on a Linux machine, secure its initial access, connect workload servers, and deploy a resource. Use Coolify’s current installation guide for the exact install command and platform-specific steps; follow the terminal’s instructions rather than using an old copied command.

  1. Prepare a Linux server. Confirm SSH access, architecture and distribution support, free disk space, and the control-plane minimum. Prefer a fresh server, especially if it already runs Docker containers.
  2. Install Coolify. Run the install script shown in the official installation instructions and follow the terminal’s next steps.
  3. Create the admin account promptly. Coolify warns that anyone who reaches the registration page first can become the instance administrator and obtain root access to the server. Restrict access to the registration page and complete setup before exposing it broadly. See the security and installation guidance.
  4. Secure and connect workload servers. Configure SSH and firewall access, then use Coolify to validate and connect each server. Account for the possibility that validation installs or restarts Docker.
  5. Add a project, environment, and resource. Choose the app or database deployment method, configure its required environment variables and storage, and set domains or health checks where appropriate.
  6. Protect recovery data. Store /data/coolify/source/.env securely. It contains secrets, including APP_KEY, used to encrypt values in Coolify’s database and needed for restoration. Back up Coolify and workload data, and test that you can restore them.

Coolify self-hosted vs. Cloud

The central difference is who operates the Coolify control plane. With self-hosting, you operate its installation, updates, backups, monitoring, and recovery. With Coolify Cloud, Coolify’s team operates that control plane. Cloud is not managed hosting for your apps: in either option, you provide and secure workload servers and remain responsible for applications, databases, volumes, secrets, server access, firewalls, DNS, backups, and workload security.

Consideration Self-hosted Coolify Coolify Cloud
Control-plane operations You install, update, back up, monitor, and recover the Coolify instance. Coolify operates the control plane.
Workload infrastructure You provide and secure the servers running your apps and databases. You still provide and secure the servers running your apps and databases.
Published platform price Free according to Coolify’s pricing page; your infrastructure costs are separate. The pricing page observed October 4, 2026, displayed a $5/month base price for two connected servers, plus $3/month for each additional server. Verify the live price before choosing.
Control-plane availability You are responsible for availability and recovery of your instance. Coolify’s choice-path documentation describes built-in high availability for the Cloud control plane; that does not guarantee workload-server availability.

For current pricing and plan details, consult Coolify’s pricing page. The trade-off is not simply “free versus paid”: self-hosting avoids a platform fee but requires your time and infrastructure to operate the control plane, while Cloud shifts that control-plane work to Coolify.

What you remain responsible for after deployment

  • Server and network security: maintain operating systems, SSH credentials, firewall rules, exposed services, and DNS configuration.
  • Secrets and access: limit administrative access and protect application secrets as well as Coolify’s recovery data.
  • Backups and restores: back up application files, database data, volumes, and the control plane as appropriate; confirm recovery by testing restores. Backup workflows differ among database engines.
  • Monitoring and incident response: review logs and health checks, but do not assume deployment automation supplies complete infrastructure monitoring or recovery.
  • Capacity and availability: size servers for actual builds and workloads. A separate deployment server can reduce competition with a self-hosted dashboard, but it does not make the workload highly available.

Coolify’s documentation distinguishes control-plane management from responsibility for the servers connected to it; its server guidance and self-hosting and Cloud choice guide explain those roles.
