To protect a convertible laptop keyboard in tablet mode, first check how your exact model is designed to handle the keyboard and touchpad. Detach a removable keyboard when the manufacturer recommends it; with a built-in keyboard that rotates beneath the screen, use the intended mode and avoid pressure or rough contact. For travel, close the device and carry it in a correctly sized sleeve or laptop compartment. A sleeve protects the closed laptop in transit, not exposed keys while you use it as a tablet.
Start by identifying your keyboard design
“Convertible laptop” can mean a built-in keyboard that folds behind the display on a 360-degree hinge, or a tablet with a keyboard that attaches and detaches. Those designs call for different handling. Find your exact model and generation in its manual or manufacturer support materials before choosing a cover or changing how you fold or carry it.
- Detachable keyboard: You can remove it during touch or pen use if the manufacturer recommends that approach. Plan where to put it so it stays clean and stable.
- Built-in rotating keyboard: The keyboard remains attached beneath the display in tablet configuration. Check whether the manufacturer says tablet mode disables keyboard and touchpad input; that feature does not physically shield the keys from dirt, abrasion, or pressure.
What happens to the keyboard in tablet mode?
Input behavior varies by model, so do not assume that every convertible disables its keyboard in the same way. Lenovo’s 2025 guide for the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 says its keyboard and pointing device are automatically disabled in tablet, stand, and tent modes. Microsoft says a folded-back Type Cover will not register key presses on the supported Surface models covered by its guide. These instructions describe specific products, not a universal rule.
Disabling input helps prevent unintended typing or pointer movement; it does not protect keycaps or the palm-rest surface from contact with hands, clothing, a tabletop, or other objects. Follow the handling method in your own device’s manual, and do not force the hinge to reach a position it was not designed for.

How to handle a detachable keyboard
For Surface Keyboard and Type Cover users, Microsoft recommends detaching the accessory when it is not needed for the best 2-in-1 experience, and suggests removing it during long inking or note-taking sessions. Set the detached keyboard on a clean, stable surface rather than leaving it where it could be stepped on, snagged, or exposed to debris. Microsoft also advises against storing a Surface open or folded back for a long time; close it as intended or detach the cover for storage.
Compatibility is model-specific. Microsoft’s Type Cover guide says the referenced cover is not compatible with Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 8, or later models. Check the compatibility information for your exact device and generation before buying or using a keyboard cover.

How to handle a built-in rotating keyboard
Use the manufacturer’s intended tablet, stand, or tent configuration, and verify what that mode disables on your model. Since the keyboard stays physically attached, pay attention to where the keys and touchpad rest when you set the laptop down or hold it. Avoid placing it on gritty, wet, or otherwise dirty surfaces, and do not press objects against the keyboard while the screen is folded back.

Lenovo cautions that excessive force while rotating the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 display, or excessive force on either upper display corner, could damage the display or hinges. Treat that as model-specific guidance, but the practical rule is broadly sensible: rotate the hinge gently and do not use the display corners as leverage.

Protect the closed laptop during transport
Before carrying the computer, close it as intended and use a sleeve sized to the device or the laptop compartment of a bag. Microsoft recommends an additional protective layer for Surface devices in transit. Check the sleeve’s dimensions against your convertible’s closed dimensions and account for an unusual hinge or chassis shape. Remove the sleeve before unfolding the laptop.
A sleeve is transport protection for the closed device. It does not cover a built-in keyboard during tablet use, and the manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal accessory that shields rotating keyboards in that configuration.

Before using a keyboard cover or improvised shield
A generic silicone cover or rigid panel is not a safe universal solution for a convertible keyboard. Fit, hinge clearance, heat behavior, pressure on the display, and compatibility can vary, and the manufacturer guidance cited here does not verify those factors for a general-purpose cover. If you want a keyboard cover, use only one documented as compatible with your exact model and generation, and follow its installation and removal instructions.
A detachable keyboard accessory is also not interchangeable across device families. For example, the Lenovo Keyboard Pack for Tab P11 Pro (2nd Gen) is a model-specific accessory; it is not evidence of a suitable cover for a built-in convertible keyboard.
