Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse PHP’s Imagick extension to read a PDF as an image sequence, then write the pages to image files. The working setup also needs ImageMagick’s PDF delegate, Ghostscript, and a security policy that permits PDF reading. Check all of these from the same PHP runtime that will handle conversions before building the feature.
Convert a PDF to page images with Imagick
Imagick exposes ImageMagick functionality to PHP. A minimal whole-document conversion looks like this:
<?php
$input = '/path/to/input.pdf';
$outputPattern = '/path/to/output/page.jpg';
$pages = new Imagick();
$pages->readImage($input);
$pages->writeImages($outputPattern, false);
$pages->clear();
$pages->destroy();
?>
readImage() reads the PDF and writeImages() writes the image sequence. The second argument, false, requests separate output files rather than one combined file. Output naming can vary with the format and installed ImageMagick version, so inspect the generated filenames and confirm that each PDF page has a corresponding image. See the PHP manual for Imagick::readImage() for the method description and user-contributed sequence examples.
Convert selected pages
Imagick can use a page selector in a filename. For example, the PHP manual page includes a user-contributed example using a zero-based selector such as test.pdf[0] to read one page. Because this example is in a user-contributed note, validate the selector syntax and indexing on your deployed PHP, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript versions before relying on it.

Check the dependencies in the PHP runtime
Installing the PHP extension alone may not be enough. Imagick is a PHP interface to ImageMagick, and ImageMagick requires Ghostscript to read PDFs. The PHP Imagick documentation describes the extension and its supported formats; ImageMagick’s format documentation identifies Ghostscript as a PDF requirement.
- Confirm Imagick is loaded in the PHP SAPI used by your application, such as PHP-FPM or the background worker. A successful command-line check does not prove that another SAPI has the extension.
- Confirm the ImageMagick installation used by that process can find and invoke Ghostscript.
- Check that the effective ImageMagick policy permits PDF input. A policy may intentionally block PDF interpretation.
- Confirm the destination directory is writable and has enough capacity for the output.
- Set limits for page count, page dimensions, and raster resolution before accepting documents.
There is no established compatibility matrix covering all current operating systems, PHP versions, and ImageMagick/Ghostscript releases. Pin and verify the versions in your own deployment rather than assuming that an example works unchanged everywhere.

Choose pages, resolution, and output format
Resolution and resource use
Higher raster resolution produces larger pixel dimensions and generally consumes more memory, CPU time, and storage. Choose a resolution for the intended task—such as a small preview, screen viewing, OCR, or print—and measure representative PDFs. The PHP manual’s user-contributed note suggests setting resolution before reading for better quality, but it does not establish a universally suitable DPI.
JPEG, PNG, and transparency
JPEG can suit photographic pages or compact previews. PNG is lossless and can preserve transparency where applicable. If the source PDF has transparency and the selected output cannot preserve it, decide whether to flatten onto a background and inspect representative pages. There is no single format or resolution that fits every conversion.

Secure and reliable conversion
PDF parsing involves ImageMagick and its delegates, so treat untrusted input as a resource and security boundary. ImageMagick’s security policy documentation explains controls for coders, modules, delegates, and resource use, including limits on memory and image-sequence length. A policy denial may be an intentional safeguard; investigate the configured policy before changing it.
The Imagick project recommends restricting the files and system resources available to scripts that use Imagick, while noting that its recommendations do not guarantee security. For an application that accepts uploads:

- Keep temporary files out of executable locations, remove them after processing, and handle conversion exceptions.
- Do not broadly enable PDF or external delegates without assessing the exposure in your environment.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Class Imagick not found |
The extension is missing or not loaded in the PHP runtime serving the request. | Check the relevant PHP-FPM or worker configuration, not only the CLI installation. |
| PDF cannot be read or Ghostscript is unavailable | ImageMagick cannot reach its PDF delegate. | Verify Ghostscript is installed and visible to the ImageMagick process used by PHP; see ImageMagick’s format requirements. |
| Operation not allowed or security-policy error | The active ImageMagick policy blocks PDF reading or a required operation. | Review the configured policy and resource limits. Do not remove restrictions indiscriminately; see ImageMagick’s security policy guidance. |
| Only one image appears, or filenames are unexpected | Output sequence naming or the writeImages() mode differs from your expectation. |
Check the generated files for your installed version and test with a multi-page PDF. The PHP manual’s sequence example is a starting point, not a naming guarantee. |
| Conversion exhausts memory, runs too long, or fills storage | The PDF has many pages, large dimensions, or an unnecessarily high raster resolution. | Bound pages and dimensions, lower resolution where acceptable, set ImageMagick resource limits, and use job timeouts and storage quotas. |
| Output directory write fails | The PHP process lacks permission or available storage. | Check directory ownership and permissions for the actual worker user, along with free disk space. |
When a wrapper or another renderer makes sense
A wrapper can make application code more convenient, but check which rendering dependency it uses and whether it is maintained for your runtime. Spatie’s pdf-to-image project documents page-saving workflows and notes ImageMagick PDF policy as a possible cause of read failures. Pop PHP’s PDF documentation describes Pdf::extractAsImages(), which requires Imagick; it is a higher-level interface to the same dependency, not an independent renderer.
Poppler command-line utilities are another rendering family, but the available documentation does not establish a complete PHP integration workflow or a controlled comparison against Imagick. Compare options against your actual deployment: delegate availability, page selection and output control, security isolation, compatibility and maintenance, and measured throughput, memory, temporary storage, and fidelity on representative PDFs. No performance or security winner is established without testing the specific builds and documents you use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a PHP Imagick installation include everything needed to read PDFs?
No. The ImageMagick installation also needs a working Ghostscript delegate, and its active security policy must allow PDF reading.
Can I assume PDF page selectors start at zero?
A zero-based selector appears in a user-contributed PHP manual example, but confirm its behavior on the versions deployed in your environment.
