Yes—you can convert HTML to a PNG or JPEG in C# with NReco.ImageGenerator in a few lines. Install the NuGet package, create an HtmlToImageConverter, and call GenerateImage. NReco is a .NET wrapper around the wkhtmltoimage executable, so its rendering support and deployment behavior are determined by that older QtWebKit engine.
Minimal conversion: HTML string to JPEG or PNG
Install the NReco.ImageGenerator NuGet package in your application. The shortest working example is:

}Change ImageFormat.Jpeg to ImageFormat.Png for a PNG. The API also documents ImageFormat.Bmp. GenerateImage returns the encoded image as a byte array, which you can save to disk, return from an ASP.NET action, upload to storage, or write to a response stream.

Rendering a URL or local HTML file
For a webpage or file, use GenerateImageFromFile:

File.WriteAllBytes("report.png", bytes);The input can be a URL or a local filesystem path. External images, stylesheets, fonts, and scripts must be accessible to the wkhtmltoimage process. A browser session’s cookies, authentication, or JavaScript state are not automatically available.
Resource failures
Missing images, CSS, or scripts can cause wkhtmltoimage network errors. If the page is still useful without a failed resource, configure the documented command-line option:
converter.CustomArgs = " --load-media-error-handling ignore ";This tells the renderer to continue when media loading fails; it does not make an inaccessible resource appear. Prefer absolute HTTPS URLs, verify that the server permits the renderer’s user agent, and test private assets with a temporary signed URL or suitable request configuration.

HtmlToImageConverter exposes settings for the most common operational requirements.

A very large page increases memory use and processing time; a small viewport can cause wrapping, clipped content, or missing below-the-fold material. For repeatable output, keep the same width, height, zoom, fonts, and asset versions across environments.

What NReco actually renders
NReco is a thin wrapper around wkhtmltoimage, which is based on QtWebKit 4.8. The vendor explicitly warns that it does not support modern CSS3 features such as flexbox and grid, or modern JavaScript such as ES2015. A page that looks correct in current Chrome may therefore reflow incorrectly, omit interactive content, or fail to execute scripts.
Designing compatible HTML
- Prefer block and table layouts over flexbox or CSS grid for critical positioning.
- Transpile or simplify JavaScript that depends on ES2015 features.
- Inline essential CSS and provide explicit fallback styles.
- Wait until charts or asynchronous content are finished before capture, using suitable wkhtmltoimage arguments.
- Use locally installed or bundled fonts when exact typography matters.
When modern browser fidelity is a requirement, test representative pages—not just a simple heading—on the exact server image and binary you will deploy.
Deployment on Windows, Linux, macOS, Docker, and modern .NET
The standard package launches wkhtmltoimage as a separate process. Your host must allow executable files to be deployed and must permit System.Diagnostics.Process. Shared ASP.NET hosting, UWP or Universal Windows apps, and mobile environments may block one or both requirements.
For Linux, macOS, Docker, and modern .NET 6 or .NET 8+ applications, NReco directs users to NReco.ImageGenerator.LT. The C# API is the same, but you must deploy wkhtmltoimage separately. Treat the executable as a deployment dependency: pin its version, place it in a known directory, grant execute permission on Unix systems, and verify it can run under the service account.
Deployment checklist
- Install the appropriate NReco package for your target framework.
- Install or copy a compatible wkhtmltoimage binary into the application image or host.
- Set
ToolPathwhen the binary is not on the expected path. - Confirm the process account can execute the file and read local assets.
- Make outbound DNS and HTTPS access available for remote resources.
- Run a health-check conversion during deployment and log the executable path, timeout, input type, and output format.
Security and reliability considerations
Rendering untrusted HTML or URLs is equivalent to running a network-capable document renderer. Validate or allow-list URLs, restrict access to internal addresses, and avoid exposing arbitrary URL capture as an unauthenticated endpoint. Sanitize user HTML when appropriate, isolate the renderer process, and apply request, output-size, and execution-time limits.

Do not share one mutable converter instance across concurrent requests unless your own testing confirms it is safe; constructing a configured instance per operation makes settings explicit. Queue expensive captures for background processing rather than holding an HTTP request open. Record failures separately for process startup, navigation, resource loading, and output writing so operators can distinguish a bad URL from a missing binary.
Licensing and maintenance
The official FAQ says free use covers a single-deployment website, intranet or extranet, or an application used internally by a company. External redistribution as an ISV, multiple deployments, and SaaS deployments require a commercial license. The vendor describes an enterprise pack with source code, extended redistribution/SaaS rights, an LT-version license key, one year of email support, and free updates. A $99 enterprise-pack price appeared on the vendor page when it was crawled; pricing is volatile, so verify the current terms directly before budgeting.

That age matters: validate compatibility with your target framework, operating system, security policy, and HTML stack before committing to it.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The executable could not be started”
Cause: wkhtmltoimage is missing, the path is wrong, permissions deny execution, or the host blocks child processes.
Fix: install the binary, set ToolPath, check Unix execute permissions, and test under the same service account. Move to a host that permits process execution if necessary.

Blank or partially rendered image
Cause: the page depends on unsupported CSS/JavaScript, asynchronous content has not finished, or the viewport is too small.

Images or styles are missing
Cause: relative paths resolve differently, remote resources require authentication, TLS or DNS is unavailable, or a request failed.
Fix: use absolute URLs or valid local paths, make resources reachable to the renderer, inspect server logs, and consider --load-media-error-handling ignore when a failed optional asset should not abort output.
Modern page looks different from Chrome
Cause: QtWebKit 4.8 lacks current CSS and JavaScript features.

Fix: create a legacy-compatible template, or use a Chromium-based renderer when browser parity is more important than NReco’s simple API.
Requests time out
Cause: slow navigation, blocked third-party resources, infinite scripts, or an undersized timeout.
Fix: remove unnecessary resources, set a bounded ExecutionTimeout, use a controlled wait strategy, and move long captures to a queue.

Yes. Pass the URL to GenerateImageFromFile and set Width and Height for the thumbnail dimensions, provided the renderer can reach the page and its resources.
