One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a browser-side PDF download, pass the HTML element containing the form content to html2pdf.js, configure the filename and page layout, then call .save(). The library uses html2canvas and jsPDF, so the PDF reflects a rendered page rather than automatically becoming a selectable-text, accessible, or fillable PDF. First decide which content the document should contain, then capture that content in a dedicated element and check the generated file in the browsers and page layouts you support.
Convert a form element to a PDF in the browser
html2pdf.js is a browser-side option for turning a DOM element into a PDF. Its documented workflow starts with an element, applies options, and saves the result. The library composes html2canvas and jsPDF; it does not run in Node.js. Load the browser build of html2pdf.js in your page or application using the project’s documented installation method, then call it after the library and target element are available.
Give the capture a dedicated container, such as #form-content. That lets you control what appears in the document without accidentally capturing navigation, buttons, or unrelated parts of the page.
<div id="form-content">
<h1>Application form</h1>
<form>
<label for="full-name">Full name</label>
<input id="full-name" name="fullName" value="Alex Example">
<label for="email">Email</label>
<input id="email" name="email" type="email" value="alex@example.com">
</form>
</div>
<button id="download-pdf" type="button">Download PDF</button>
<script>
document.getElementById('download-pdf').addEventListener('click', () => {
const formContent = document.getElementById('form-content');
const options = {
filename: 'completed-form.pdf',
margin: 0.5,
pagebreak: { mode: ['css', 'legacy'] },
jsPDF: { unit: 'in', format: 'letter', orientation: 'portrait' }
};
html2pdf().set(options).from(formContent).save();
});
</script>
This example assumes that the browser build has already loaded and made html2pdf available globally. In a bundled application, use the project’s documented package setup and make sure the library is available before the click handler runs. The example uses Letter paper in portrait orientation; choose the format that matches the audience and document requirements.

Make sure the PDF includes the intended form state
The library converts the element you pass to it. A form’s live state can differ from its initial HTML—for example, a user may have typed a new value or selected an option. Do not assume that every live control will appear in the PDF exactly as desired. Generate a sample after editing each kind of control used by your form, and inspect the actual PDF.
If a control does not render in the form you need, create a document-specific view that displays the current values as ordinary text and other suitable page content, then pass that view to .from(). This also gives you a way to omit interactive controls such as submit buttons or reset controls from the document. Treat the displayed document as a separate output representation; keep it synchronized with the form state at the time the user requests the export.

Choose paper, margins, quality, and page breaks
html2pdf.js documents options for the output filename, margins, image type and quality, page-break behavior, html2canvas, and jsPDF settings such as units, paper format, and orientation. There is no universal setting that suits every form: a short portrait form and a wide, multi-page report need different layouts. Start with the actual content and inspect the result rather than assuming that a page-sized browser view will automatically paginate well.
| Setting | What to decide | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
filename |
A useful downloaded file name, including the .pdf extension. |
Check the browser’s resulting download name and choose a name that makes sense to the person saving it. |
margin |
Space around the printed content. The example uses 0.5 with units set to inches. |
Confirm that text, borders, and other important content are not clipped at the page edge. |
jsPDF.format and jsPDF.orientation |
Paper size and portrait or landscape layout. The example uses Letter and portrait. | Check the document on the paper format your users expect, especially if the form has wide columns. |
pagebreak |
How configured page-break behavior should be applied. The example enables the documented CSS and legacy modes. | Inspect long sections and content near page boundaries for awkward splits or unexpected blank space. |
| Image type and quality | Rendering quality versus PDF size when the form includes visual content. | Compare the legibility and file size of output from your real page; the documentation does not establish one best setting for every form. |
| html2canvas options | Rendering behavior exposed through the underlying renderer. | Test the elements and assets used by your page, including any content with browser security restrictions. |
The documented CSS and legacy page-break modes are configuration choices, not a guarantee that every browser layout will break exactly where you want. For a long form, use a representative completed example, inspect every page, and adjust the document layout or page-break configuration as needed. Avoid adding a break rule solely because it looks right on screen; verify where it falls in the saved PDF.

What this conversion does—and what it does not promise
This route renders HTML through html2canvas and uses jsPDF to produce a PDF. That matters when the page includes content the browser will not expose to a canvas. html2canvas documents that it cannot render cross-origin iframe content because the browser does not expose the iframe’s contentDocument; it also cannot read a canvas that has been tainted by cross-origin content. An element may be visible on the webpage yet remain unavailable to this rendering route.
Neither the html2pdf.js nor jsPDF HTML documentation cited here establishes that the resulting PDF preserves selectable text, accessibility structure, or interactive PDF fields. Do not promise those properties based on a successful download. If users need searchable text, accessible document structure, or fillable PDF fields, treat that as a separate output requirement and verify the generated file directly against it.

When jsPDF’s HTML method is an alternative
jsPDF also exposes an HTML method that accepts an HTML element or string. Its project documentation says that method depends on html2canvas, so it is another entry point to HTML rendering—not evidence that it avoids the same canvas-related constraints. html2pdf.js offers a documented worker chain and a set of options for filenames, margins, page breaks, image output, and PDF page settings; choose based on the interface and configuration surface that fits your application. The available documentation does not establish a controlled quality comparison between the two methods or a current browser-version support matrix.

If what you need is a PDF or image capture of a webpage at a URL, rather than a client-side export of unsaved form values, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It captures a page from one GET request; it is not a substitute for converting local, in-memory form state into a purpose-built document. Here is the cURL request from its API pattern, with the URL set to a page that displays the completed form:

Troubleshooting a form-to-PDF export
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
The click does nothing or html2pdf is undefined. |
The browser build has not loaded, the click handler ran before it was available, or the expected global is not exposed by your bundle. | Check the browser console and verify the library’s loading or module setup. Run the export only after the target element and library are ready. |
| The PDF is blank or missing the form. | The element passed to .from() is missing, empty, or not the content you expected at capture time. |
Check that document.getElementById('form-content') returns the intended element and that the displayed document is populated before saving. |
| Some fields show old, empty, or unexpected values. | The captured rendering may not reflect the live state of every form control. | Test after changing each control type. If needed, render the current values in a document-specific view and capture that view. |
| An embedded frame or canvas content is absent. | Cross-origin browser security restrictions can prevent html2canvas from reading the content. | Check whether the asset is in a cross-origin iframe or whether a canvas has been tainted by cross-origin content. Do not expect client-side rendering to bypass those restrictions. |
| Text or images are cut off, tiny, or split poorly. | The selected page format, orientation, margins, or page-break behavior may not suit the content. | Try the appropriate paper format or orientation, adjust margins or the document layout, and inspect output across page boundaries. |
| The PDF is larger or less legible than expected. | Image output settings affect visual quality and file size, particularly for image-heavy content. | Compare the documented image type and quality options using representative forms and choose a balance that meets your users’ needs. |
| The result downloads, but users cannot select text or fill PDF fields. | A rendered HTML-to-PDF workflow does not establish those output properties. | Open the PDF in the viewers your users rely on and verify the required text, accessibility, and field behavior. Select another document-generation approach if those are requirements. |
Test the export before shipping
Check the generated PDF as a document, not just as a successful function call. Use a completed form with long and short answers, optional sections, selected choices, and the visual assets your page actually uses. Confirm the exported values match the state the user submitted, that the intended sections appear, and that page boundaries do not obscure content.
- Test a short form and a long form in the target paper format and orientation.
- Check fields after users edit them, not only with default or prefilled values.
- Inspect pages containing embedded or canvas-based content for omissions caused by browser security restrictions.
- Open the downloaded file in the PDF viewers relevant to your users and confirm the properties your application requires.
- Keep the export focused on the data users intend to save; a dedicated document view helps prevent unrelated interface elements from appearing.
The browser-side approach is useful when the desired output is a rendered PDF of content already available in the page. Its success depends on the content html2canvas can render and on how well the chosen layout fits the document. For a form with strict requirements for selectable text, accessibility, or interactive PDF fields, validate those requirements independently rather than treating a visual export as proof.
