Use PHP’s IANA timezone identifier America/Los_Angeles for Los Angeles time, then format the result with T when you want its date-specific abbreviation. It displays PST for a winter date such as January 1, but the abbreviation can differ at other times of year.
Convert a known instant to Los Angeles time
If your input represents a known instant—such as a UTC timestamp—create a DateTimeZone for Los Angeles and apply it to a DateTimeImmutable value with setTimezone():

Parse a local Los Angeles wall-clock time
If the input is a local clock reading with no timezone attached, pass the intended zone when constructing the value. Do not treat such input as UTC and then convert it.

echo $local->format('Y-m-d H:i:s T');This tells PHP that the supplied clock reading is already Los Angeles local time. For an input that represents an instant, use the conversion approach in the previous section instead.
Choose a named timezone, not a fixed PST offset
America/Los_Angeles identifies a location whose timezone rules depend on the date. PST is an abbreviation, while -08:00 is a fixed UTC offset; neither should replace the location identifier when you need Los Angeles rules across dates. PHP accepts identifiers, abbreviations, and offsets as timezone inputs, but they do not mean the same thing.

Use $date->format('e') to display the timezone identifier and $date->format('T') to display the abbreviation applicable to that date.
Set Los Angeles as the script-wide default
When the whole script should use one default timezone, call date_default_timezone_set():

Handle invalid identifiers and timezone data
date_default_timezone_set()returnsfalseif it receives an invalid timezone identifier. Check the return value when the identifier comes from configuration or user input.- PHP warns that behavior for timezone names not included in its supported list is undefined. Use a supported identifier such as
America/Los_Angeles. - PHP’s supported timezone list is based on timezone database version 2026.5, as identified by the PHP documentation. A deployed runtime may use different timezone data; if results disagree or rules have changed, check the timezone data available in that runtime.
