Use Selenium’s TakesScreenshot API to capture the page, then Java’s ImageIO to encode that image as JPEG. The standard WebDriver screenshot is for the current browsing context (typically the visible browser area), not a universal full-document capture. The example below saves a JPEG and checks that Java found a JPEG writer.
Capture a webpage and save it as JPEG
This Java example uses Selenium’s standard screenshot API and Java ImageIO. Add Selenium and a compatible browser driver to your project, then replace the example URL with the page you need.
import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.IOException;
import javax.imageio.ImageIO;
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
public class WebpageToJpeg {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
File screenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
BufferedImage image = ImageIO.read(screenshot);
if (image == null) {
throw new IOException("Could not decode screenshot image");
}
boolean written = ImageIO.write(image, "jpg", new File("page.jpg"));
if (!written) {
throw new IOException("No JPEG writer available");
}
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
The flow is capture, decode, then encode. OutputType.FILE supplies a temporary screenshot file; read or copy it promptly rather than relying on its path as a permanent artifact. The code is an illustrative pattern, not a tested compatibility guarantee for every Selenium/browser setup. See Selenium’s screenshot documentation and Java ImageIO.
Choose the capture area: viewport or full page
The standard WebDriver screenshot represents the current browsing context; do not assume it includes all content below the viewport in every browser. If you need the entire scrollable document, use a browser-specific full-page facility and confirm it works with the browser and Selenium versions deployed.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Firefox full-page option
Selenium’s Java API documents FirefoxDriver.getFullPageScreenshotAs(OutputType<X>) through HasFullPageScreenshot. This is a Firefox-specific option, not a cross-browser guarantee. Consult the FirefoxDriver Java API and HasFullPageScreenshot API for the relevant version.
DevTools screenshot option
A versioned Selenium DevTools binding for protocol v122 / Selenium 4.19.0 documents Page.captureScreenshot and JPEG as a format. Treat that as a browser- and version-specific route: verify that the DevTools binding matches your Selenium and browser versions before building around it. It does not establish universal full-page JPEG support. See the versioned Page API.

Understand JPEG quality and transparency
ImageIO.write(image, "jpg", file) selects a JPEG encoder by format name. JPEG is lossy, so fine text and sharp interface edges can become softer than in the captured image. Oracle’s image-saving tutorial specifically cautions against JPEG for screenshots where exact preservation matters. Choose PNG when pixel fidelity or transparency matters; use JPEG when the recipient requires it or the lossy format’s trade-off is acceptable.
JPEG does not preserve transparent pixels. If the source can contain transparency, composite it onto an explicit opaque background before writing JPEG. Pick the background to suit the page or downstream use; there is no universally correct color.

Other Selenium screenshot output types
TakesScreenshot.getScreenshotAs supports OutputType.FILE, OutputType.BYTES, and OutputType.BASE64. FILE is convenient for the decode-and-write example above; BYTES and BASE64 can suit workflows that keep screenshot data in memory or transmit it. Regardless of input type, convert to a BufferedImage or otherwise decode the screenshot before using ImageIO to write a different format. See Selenium’s TakesScreenshot API.
Troubleshoot common failures
ClassCastExceptionwhen casting toTakesScreenshot: the active driver implementation may not support screenshots. Use a WebDriver/browser combination that implements Selenium’s screenshot interface.ImageIO.readreturnsnull: Java could not decode the supplied file as an image. Confirm the screenshot capture produced image data and that the temporary file is still available when you read it.ImageIO.writereturnsfalse: no suitable writer was found for the requested format. Check that the format name isjpgand that a JPEG writer is available in the runtime.- The output is not a full-page image: the standard screenshot is not a universal full-document capture. Use a supported full-page browser API and verify compatibility for the actual browser/version.
- Text looks less crisp than expected: JPEG compression is lossy. Save as PNG when preserving exact UI edges and text is more important than JPEG output.
- Transparent areas turn dark or otherwise unexpected: JPEG has no transparency. Composite against a chosen opaque background before encoding.
- Dynamic or lazy content is missing: screenshot documentation alone does not establish that pages have finished rendering or that lazy images have loaded. Your capture flow must wait for the page state and content your application requires; validate that behavior on the target site.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-request capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its API can return JPEG; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the request options and response behavior.

Frequently asked questions
Does changing the filename extension convert a screenshot to JPEG?
No. Encode the decoded image with a JPEG writer, such as ImageIO.write(image, "jpg", outputFile); renaming a PNG file to end in .jpg does not change its format.
