To stream prerecorded video on YouTube without leaving your computer on, use a cloud streaming service that supports your playlist or loop; YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre as an option for 24/7 prerecorded streams. For a continuous camera feed, a compatible in-camera or standalone encoder may work instead. Neither approach guarantees uninterrupted streaming, so test the setup and monitor it.

A software encoder such as OBS runs on your computer, so the computer must remain available to encode and send the stream. A cloud service handles that playout remotely, while camera-based and standalone encoders are separate options for live camera or production workflows. Compare what each option supports before choosing.

Compare ways to stream without a desktop encoder

Option Best fit Computer requirement What to verify
Cloud streaming service Prerecorded videos or a recurring playlist No dedicated local PC is needed for cloud playout Playlist and loop support, recovery behavior, monitoring, resolution, storage, cost, and account integrations
Camera-based encoder A continuous real-world camera feed May avoid a desktop encoder with a compatible camera and app Camera compatibility, network reliability, automated recovery, power, and unattended operation
Standalone hardware encoder Dedicated live production or camera input Uses separate hardware rather than the personal computer Inputs, YouTube compatibility, monitoring, failover, power, network, and price
Software encoder, such as OBS Flexible production controlled locally The computer must stay available as the encoder Local reliability, power, network, heat, software updates, and crash recovery

YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streaming, Upstream as a cloud studio, and CamStreamer as an in-camera app for compatible Axis cameras. These are options to investigate, not endorsements or guarantees of uptime. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that every service supports the same playlist, loop, monitoring, or recovery features.

Prepare your YouTube channel and stream

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Initial live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help, so enable it before your planned launch. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then connect your service or encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key.

  1. Confirm the channel is eligible and enable live streaming in advance.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  3. Configure the chosen service or encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address.
  4. Run a test. Check the Live Control Room preview, the watch page, and playback on mobile before relying on the stream.
  5. Test how interruptions are handled and check what alerts and monitoring the provider offers. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring; do not assume a particular service will recover automatically.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple output formats for viewers.

Choose a bitrate and check bandwidth

Start with settings appropriate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test whether the actual connection can sustain them. The following starting points are YouTube’s H.264 incoming-stream recommendations; they are not a guarantee that your upload connection can maintain the stream.

Resolution Frame rate Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate

720p 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. Recommendations differ for H.265 and AV1, so consult the codec-specific settings rather than reusing H.264 values. YouTube advises testing upload speed and choosing a quality your connection can reliably support.

Monitor continuity and plan for archives

A 24/7 schedule is an operating goal, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. Problems can arise with the source, network, encoder, cloud service, YouTube ingest, or account restrictions. YouTube recommends testing and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. For a cloud setup, test the provider’s recovery behavior and alerts rather than assuming automatic failover.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not promise an automatic archive for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. If you need a complete replay, test a separate recording or archive workflow; YouTube’s documentation does not establish a method that guarantees a full archive of a longer stream.

Before a long broadcast, check the provider’s playlist and loop support, stream status tools, recovery behavior, and pricing. If a full replay matters, confirm your recording plan as well. YouTube’s listed services are not a comparison of price, uptime, or support commitments; verify those details with each provider.

FAQ

How do I stream on YouTube 24/7 without leaving my PC on?

For prerecorded video, choose a cloud streaming service that supports your playlist or loop. YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. Test its features and recovery behavior before relying on it; YouTube does not guarantee a provider’s uptime.

Can I loop prerecorded videos as a YouTube live stream?

A cloud streaming service can handle prerecorded playout if it supports the playlist or loop you need. Verify that feature with the provider. Do not assume YouTube itself will run a continuous prerecorded loop for you.
