Vagga can describe an isolated PHP development environment, install Composer dependencies, and run an application alongside a database. Its official PHP and Laravel examples, however, use PHP 7 and Alpine 3.5, and the documentation’s current compatibility with Linux distributions is not established. Treat Vagga as a documented development workflow to evaluate—not as a verified modern default.
How Vagga fits PHP development
Vagga is documented for development environments and container builds, with commands that can run multiple processes. Rather than installing a project’s PHP runtime and dependencies directly on the host, you describe the environment in Vagga configuration: choose a base distribution, install PHP and the extensions the app needs, and configure how Composer is used.
That can help keep project dependencies separate from the host and make the setup repeatable for contributors. The trade-off is that the configuration and package names have to match a compatible base image and runtime. Vagga’s published PHP instructions are historical examples, not a recommendation for current PHP versions.
How to set up the documented PHP workflow
Choose a base and install PHP requirements
Start with a container base distribution, then declare the PHP runtime and extensions required by the application. Vagga’s PHP guide gives PHP 7 package examples including php7-openssl, php7-phar, php7-json, php7-pdo, php7-dom, and php7-zip. Those names belong to the guide’s older package ecosystem; check whether equivalent packages and a supported Vagga workflow exist for the distribution and PHP version you intend to use. See the Vagga build guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure Composer and dependency placement
Vagga’s documented Composer integration installs project dependencies from composer.json. The guide places them under /usr/local/lib/composer/vendor, so an application that expects dependencies in its own vendor directory may need configuration to make the expected path available. The guide also describes selecting the runtime executable and disabling Vagga’s default runtime installation when PHP is installed by another method. Account for both choices explicitly rather than assuming Composer’s dependency path or PHP executable will match your application’s expectations.
Use the Laravel example as a model, not a current template
The official Laravel walkthrough builds a base container from Alpine 3.5, installs PHP 7 and extensions, then layers application setup on top. It configures environment variables and Composer, makes dependencies available at the project’s expected vendor path, and defines a run command. It also demonstrates running a database service alongside the app. This is useful for understanding the shape of a Vagga workflow, but its versions make it unsuitable as a copy-and-run recipe for a current Laravel project. See Vagga’s examples.

Can one Vagga command run the PHP app and database?
The Laravel tutorial demonstrates coordinating a database service with the application, and Vagga describes commands that can run multiple processes. That makes a single local workflow for the app and its supporting service a documented use case. The exact command and configuration depend on the tutorial and project setup; do not assume the legacy example’s database, PHP, or distribution choices are compatible with a present-day project.
How Vagga compares with current PHP container workflows
Docker’s PHP guidance covers containerized application runtimes, local databases, persisted data, development dependencies, and tests. Its Laravel guide describes a Compose setup using PHP-FPM, Nginx, PostgreSQL, and Xdebug, and notes that using the production image as the basis for development can help align environments. These sources illustrate current container-development patterns, not proof that Docker and Vagga are interchangeable.

For Docker’s PHP concepts and Laravel example, see Docker’s PHP guide and Docker’s Laravel guide. Choose based on the tool your team can support, the service coordination your project needs, and whether the examples align with your target runtime.
Is Vagga suitable for production?
No—not as the production service runner described by its own documentation. Vagga says it does not automatically restart failed services and states: “While vagga is perfect for development environments and to build containers, it should not be the tool of choice to run your software in production environments.” Use a separate production runtime or service manager when automatic recovery is required. The warning is in the Vagga documentation.

What to verify before adopting Vagga today
The official pages identify documentation version 0.8.1 and show legacy PHP 7/Alpine 3.5 examples. The available documentation does not establish Vagga’s current release activity, support status, or compatibility with current Linux distributions. Before basing a team workflow on it, verify those points against the project’s current official materials, then validate the full stack—base distribution, PHP version, extensions, Composer behavior, and any database service—in a test project.
