Neither Contabo nor Vultr can be named the overall winner from the public information available. Contabo’s US pricing page makes VPS bundles easy to compare by vCPU, RAM, storage and port speed, while Vultr’s product documentation covers a much wider cloud catalogue. The better choice depends on your workload, the region you need, the price for the term you actually commit to, and whether you will need services beyond a single server.

What this comparison can and cannot settle

Two gaps limit any firm verdict. First, we did not find a current Vultr plan with a like-for-like CPU, RAM, storage and traffic allowance to set against Contabo’s listings, so this article makes no price-per-resource comparison. Second, we did not locate a controlled benchmark of the two providers, so no claim about speed or reliability can be made in either direction.

Contabo has published its own comparison with Vultr, last updated 2 October 2024. It is written by one of the two providers and predates current listings, so treat any prices in it as historical and its conclusions as one side’s view.

Contabo: what its US pricing page shows

Contabo’s US pricing page lists Core VPS and Performance VPS configurations with CPU, RAM, storage, port speed, a traffic description and a price. The prices shown are for a 24-month term. A monthly figure you see elsewhere, or a price quoted in a different billing region, may not be directly comparable. Check the total at checkout, including any tax that applies to your billing location.

Examples visible on the page are shown below. Prices are left out because they change, and the page itself is the authoritative source for them.

Plan vCPU RAM Storage Port speed Processor
Core Cloud VPS 4 4 8 GB 100 GB SSD 200 Mbit/s Not stated in the listing
Core Cloud VPS 6 6 12 GB 200 GB SSD 300 Mbit/s Not stated in the listing
Performance Cloud VPS Plus 4 4 8 GB 150 GB NVMe 500 Mbit/s AMD EPYC

The table shows why headline specifications mislead. The two Core plans and the Performance plan are not interchangeable: the Performance example pairs the same vCPU and RAM counts with NVMe storage, a faster port and a named AMD EPYC processor. Whether that difference matters for your application depends on the workload, which is a question the listing alone cannot answer.

Reading Contabo’s traffic terms

Contabo describes traffic as unlimited, but that is subject to fair usage. Exceptionally high or disruptive use may be throttled at Contabo’s discretion. Treat “unlimited” as a description with conditions, not a guarantee. If your workload involves sustained heavy outbound transfer, ask Contabo how fair use is applied before you commit to a term.

Contabo’s VPS documentation

Contabo’s Cloud VPS documentation describes the product as unmanaged hosting, meaning the operating system, security updates and application stack are your responsibility. It refers to snapshots and paid automatic backups. The exact plan-level backup limits and fees were not confirmed in the material we reviewed, so check them in Contabo’s documentation or control panel before you rely on them.

Vultr: what its product documentation covers

Vultr’s official product documentation lists compute instances alongside a wider cloud catalogue:

  • GPU instances
  • Bare metal servers
  • Object storage and block storage
  • File systems
  • Managed databases
  • Kubernetes
  • Load balancers
  • Networking
  • Backups and snapshots

That breadth matters if your application may grow into several cooperating services, such as a web tier, a managed database and a load balancer. It does not by itself make Vultr cheaper or faster for a single VPS. Current plan prices, region-level availability and the traffic allowance for a plan equivalent to Contabo’s examples were not established for this comparison, so confirm them on Vultr’s pricing and region pages for the configuration you need.

Performance: how to test instead of guessing

Advertised vCPU and RAM counts do not translate directly into application speed. CPU allocation, storage type, network path and the noisy-neighbour behaviour of shared infrastructure all affect results. Because no like-for-like benchmark is available, the only reliable answer for your case is a short test of both providers using your own stack:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose one region that both providers serve close to your users. Deploy the same operating system image and application stack on one instance from each provider, using comparable configurations.
  2. Measure network latency from a machine near your users. Run ping -c 50 203.0.113.10 (replace the address with your server’s IP) and record the average and the packet loss.
  3. Measure application response time with repeated requests: curl -o /dev/null -s -w '%{time_total}' https://example.com/ (replace the URL). Run it at least 100 times and note the median and the 95th percentile.
  4. Measure disk I/O on the storage type you plan to use. A representative random read/write run is fio --name=randrw-test --rw=randrw --bs=4k --size=1G --iodepth=32 --direct=1 --runtime=60 --time_based --group_reporting. Run it on the instance’s data disk, not the system disk, and repeat it at different times of day.
  5. Check sustained CPU behaviour by running your real workload under load for at least an hour. Watch the steal column in vmstat 5; a steadily high value suggests the host is contending for CPU time.
  6. Compare total monthly or term cost for the same region, storage, backup setup and traffic conditions, not the headline plan size.

Backups and snapshots

Both providers document backup or snapshot features, but the terms that decide whether two plans are equivalent are the ones that are easiest to miss: how many restore points are kept, how long they are retained, how restoring works, and what each one costs. Contabo’s documentation points to snapshots and paid automatic backups. Vultr’s product documentation lists backups and snapshots among its services. Neither source, as reviewed here, sets out the retention periods and fees in a form that allows a direct comparison, so ask each provider for those figures in writing before you choose.

Which provider fits which workload

  • A single website or application on one virtual machine, where budget is the main constraint: start with Contabo’s plan listings, calculate the 24-month total, read the fair-use wording, and then run the performance test above on both providers.
  • A single VM that must run in a specific region: confirm that the region is offered and has capacity in each provider’s console before comparing prices, because region availability was not established here.
  • An application that may need a managed database, Kubernetes, a load balancer or object storage later: Vultr’s documented catalogue covers these services, so price the specific services you expect to use rather than only the compute instance.
  • Sustained heavy outbound transfer: put the traffic question to each provider directly, because Contabo’s unlimited traffic is subject to fair use and possible throttling.
  • GPU or bare metal needs: Vultr’s documentation lists GPU instances and bare metal. The Contabo examples reviewed here do not show either, so check Contabo’s full catalogue before assuming it offers them.
