How do I stream 24/7 on YouTube?
You need a continuous video source, an encoder or hosted playback service, a reliable connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, and an operations plan for interruptions and archives. In a self-managed VPS setup, the VPS runs the encoder software; YouTube receives the encoded feed and distributes it to viewers. Can I use a VPS for YouTube live streaming?
Yes. A VPS can host an encoder that sends a live feed to YouTube. Contabo describes VPS plans in terms of virtual compute and plan-level resources; the operator remains responsible for configuring applications (Contabo VPS documentation). Before selecting a plan, establish the encoder’s CPU or GPU needs, target settings, region, number of outputs, recording requirements, and how you will monitor and recover the process. The available evidence does not establish one universally suitable Contabo plan for every 24/7 channel.
Do not read port speed as guaranteed streaming capacity
Contabo’s terms state an annual-average 99.9% physical connectivity availability for listed infrastructure, including VPS, subject to exclusions. The same terms do not guarantee a specific bandwidth level for an individual server unless expressly agreed; this is not an end-to-end guarantee that an encoder application or YouTube stream will stay live (Contabo terms). Contabo also says its traffic policy is subject to fair use: exceptionally high or disruptive usage can lead to throttling, and port speeds depend on the product (Contabo traffic guidance). Match the actual product and region to a measured workload; do not equate a port headline or no-default-limit language with guaranteed sustained bitrate.

Size outbound capacity for the real feed
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommended ingest settings, not guarantees of stream quality, VPS throughput, or a monthly traffic allowance (YouTube encoder settings). YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; include any backup feed in the calculation (YouTube streaming tips). For example, a 1080p30 H.264 feed at the recommended 5 Mbps requires more than 5 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity once headroom is included. Measure the workload over time and account for other traffic on the server.
What should I configure for YouTube ingest?
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the codec and resolution you select: its recommendations vary by format and frame rate. The figures here are H.264 examples, not universal settings for every codec or source. YouTube also recommends testing and monitoring the stream. The service transcodes the incoming feed into playback formats, so the encoder’s ingest profile is not the same thing as a promise that every viewer will receive that exact bitrate (YouTube encoder settings).

- Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to match the source and YouTube’s applicable current recommendations.
- Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder, and keep the key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live control workflow and update the encoder.
- Test the complete route from source through encoder to YouTube before relying on it for continuous output.
- Monitor both the encoder process and YouTube’s receipt of the stream; a running process alone does not prove that the platform is receiving usable video.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream?
Do not rely on automatic archiving for a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all (YouTube archive guidance). If keeping a complete recording matters, configure a local or separate archive and size its storage for the duration, bitrate, and retention period you need. A VPS recording also consumes disk space and requires monitoring and backup planning.

Choose a VPS when control is worth the operating work
- You can install and maintain the encoder and operating system.
- You need flexibility over software, recording, or server configuration.
- You can validate sustained capacity and provide monitoring, restart logic, security, and backups.
Choose a managed encoder when operating the stack is the burden
- You want a hosted encoding workflow rather than maintaining a server yourself.
- You need distribution to multiple destinations or outputs; verify each provider’s destinations, limits, recovery, and charges.
- You prefer to evaluate a provider’s service terms instead of owning all server-level tasks.
YouTube’s documentation describes cloud encoders as a way to send one high-quality stream to selected channels, resolutions, or platforms. That is a separate layer from YouTube’s own ingest and viewer distribution; confirm the specific provider’s current capabilities and limits before choosing it.
