Contabo says its servers have no default bandwidth limit, but fair-use terms apply and exceptionally high or disruptive traffic may be throttled. That means a Contabo VPS may have enough advertised port capacity for a YouTube stream, but neither the port-speed figure nor the word “unlimited” guarantees a stable 24/7 stream or establishes that every continuous-stream workload is expressly approved. Check the terms for your exact plan and test the VPS-to-YouTube route before relying on it.
This reflects Contabo’s Help Center and product documentation available in 2026. YouTube’s recommended encoding bitrate and your accumulated monthly traffic are separate questions: a stream can use a moderate data rate while transferring several terabytes over a month.
What “bandwidth limit” means for a Contabo VPS
Three different measurements are easy to confuse:
- Port speed is the advertised network-link capacity, expressed in Mbps or Gbps. Contabo’s cited VPS plan documentation displays port rates from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps; rates and terms vary by plan, so confirm the current details for the specific plan and location you intend to order. - Stream bitrate is the data rate sent by the encoder, usually in Mbps. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate.
- Traffic volume is the total data transferred over time, usually counted in GB or TB. A modest stream bitrate running all day can accumulate substantial monthly traffic.
A port-speed number is not a promise of that rate end to end. It does not establish the throughput to YouTube, the absence of packet loss, or the stability of a long-running stream.
Does Contabo throttle VPS bandwidth?
Contabo’s current Help Center states that there is no default bandwidth limit for VPS, VDS or dedicated servers, while also saying its fair-use policy applies. The provider reserves the right to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive use. Its current product documentation likewise presents traffic as unlimited with a fair-use qualification. Read the terms attached to your order and ask Contabo support about your intended persistent workload if the policy boundary matters to your use case. How to interpret Contabo’s older traffic schedule
Contabo’s older post, dated September 4, 2024 and last updated April 10, 2025, described traffic packages of 10 TB, 32 TB, 81 TB, 162 TB, 243 TB and 324 TB, with port-speed reductions after usage exceeded a package for ten consecutive days. That post may describe an earlier or product-specific rule set; the current Help Center wording does not repeat the same fixed schedule. Do not treat the ten-day threshold or listed tiers as a universal rule for every current VPS. For your account, the applicable order terms and confirmation from Contabo support are more relevant than assuming either that no limit can ever apply or that the older schedule necessarily governs. The displayed Contabo VPS port rates of 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps are numerically above these example bitrates. That comparison is only a first check: it does not prove that the VPS can sustain the required upload rate to YouTube. The actual route, packet loss, shared resources, encoder CPU load and any policy enforcement can affect results. Estimate how much traffic a 24/7 stream uses
For a rough decimal-data estimate, use bitrate in Mbps × seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 to get GB. The figures below assume a constant video bitrate for every hour; they are arithmetic estimates, not traffic figures published by Contabo or YouTube.

Actual totals can differ because of audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, relaying or other server traffic. If you stream only part of each day, multiply the hourly estimate by your planned hours rather than using the 24-hour total. Compare that estimate with the traffic wording for your exact Contabo plan, and ask support how its fair-use policy applies to continuous outbound streaming.
How to check a VPS before relying on it
- Confirm the exact plan and terms. Check the plan’s advertised port speed, location and current traffic/fair-use wording in your Contabo account or order details. Do not infer the terms from another VPS tier or from an older traffic post.
- Set the encoder for your intended YouTube format. Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate, and account for audio and any other traffic when estimating total upload demand. - Test the actual VPS-to-YouTube path. Run a private or unlisted test stream using the intended settings. A general speed test can help check upload capacity, but it does not prove the route to YouTube will remain stable over time.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health during the test. Check for dropped frames, bitrate instability or other warnings; use YouTube’s live control room and encoder diagnostics to identify issues. A clean short test is useful evidence, not a guarantee of 24/7 reliability.
- Check the separate compute requirement. If the VPS encodes the video, CPU capacity and encoder load matter as well as network bandwidth. If it only relays an already-encoded stream, determine which traffic crosses the VPS and where viewer playback traffic is served; these configurations can have different network demands.
- Ask Contabo about policy uncertainty. If the workload is continuous or unusually high-volume, get clarification tied to your product and order terms rather than relying on the older ten-day schedule.
What the available figures do not establish
Contabo’s published plan rates and YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not provide a guaranteed Contabo-to-YouTube throughput, an uptime guarantee for continuous streaming, or explicit authorization specifically for 24/7 YouTube streaming. They also do not show that a particular VPS will avoid fair-use review. A test can expose route or configuration problems, but it cannot turn an advertised port speed into a service guarantee.
