Contabo’s Nextcloud offer is a paid VPS with a free, pre-installed Nextcloud 1-click add-on. The installation is quick, but Contabo does not run Nextcloud for you. After deployment, you are responsible for maintaining, updating, troubleshooting, and backing up the application. This review explains what the offer includes, where the responsibilities sit, and what user feedback can and cannot tell you.
What the offer includes
Contabo describes Nextcloud as a private cloud platform for file storage, collaboration, and productivity. The add-on can be ordered pre-installed with a new VPS, or installed on an existing Contabo VPS or VDS through the Customer Panel. The software itself is free; you pay for the server it runs on.
Contabo’s Help Center says the Docker-based add-on runs on Ubuntu LTS 24.04 and bundles five components:
- Nextcloud, the application itself
- Caddy, the web server
- Redis, for caching
- MariaDB, the database
- Cron, for scheduled background jobs
Deployment may take up to 30 minutes after the server is provisioned. Contabo’s tutorial, published July 17, 2026, walks through 1-click setup, user management, sharing, connecting a custom domain, and keeping the instance updated. It documents the intended workflow; it is not an independent usability test.

Plan sizing: minimums versus recommendations
Contabo’s Help Center lists requirements for the add-on on Cloud VPS 10 and Cloud VDS S plans. These are vendor figures, and they do not establish how many users, how many files, or what office workload a given plan can handle.

The minimum is the level at which the add-on can be installed, not a level at which it will feel responsive. Storage needs are the easiest to underestimate: Nextcloud keeps versions and trash, and synced files accumulate quickly, so plan for growth beyond the 50 GB recommendation if you intend to store a large library.
Contabo’s English-US Nextcloud page shows a Cloud VPS 4 example at €5.50 per month for the first 24 months, with 4 vCPU cores, 8 GB RAM, and 100 GB SSD. This is a promotional price displayed on the page, not a guaranteed checkout price. Location, taxes, renewal pricing, and configuration can all change the total, so confirm them at checkout before you commit.

Who runs what
Contabo draws a clear line between infrastructure and application support. Its 24/7 technical support covers the physical server, network connectivity, and VPS access. It does not cover Nextcloud application issues. For configuration questions, errors, and app help, Contabo directs customers to the Nextcloud community resources.
In practice, that means you handle the following yourself:
- Applying Nextcloud and system updates after deployment
- Creating user accounts and sharing files
- Diagnosing application errors and app conflicts
- Configuring and testing backups
- Monitoring disk usage as your data grows
If you do not have someone comfortable with Linux server administration and Nextcloud’s own settings, this is the most important factor in the decision. The convenience is at install time; the work comes after.

Credentials and account recovery
The initial password is used for both VPS access and the Nextcloud application. New users’ activation details are not emailed automatically, so the administrator has to pass credentials along.
The recovery risk is the most serious one in the setup. If the administrator changes the initial password and has not linked an email address to the Nextcloud account, Contabo says regaining access requires a reinstall or a new installation, and that causes data loss. Before you go further, do three things:
- Store the administrator credentials in a password manager your team can reach.
- Link a recovery email address to the Nextcloud administrator account.
- Confirm that the recovery path works before you load important files.
Backups: your responsibility, on separate storage
Contabo states that backup planning is the customer’s responsibility and recommends keeping a copy on separate storage. Its pages do not confirm that automated backups are included with the add-on, and they do not show that a restore has been tested.

Treat the backup as a project of its own. Decide how often data needs copying, where the copies will live, and how long you keep them. A separate external hard drive is one possible destination for a copy, but it is only one part of a backup plan. Size it against your real data volume, and test a restore onto a fresh instance before you rely on it. Buying a drive does not by itself make your data recoverable.
What user feedback can and cannot tell you
Searches for Contabo turned up mixed comments about pricing, support, and reliability on G2, Trustpilot, and Reddit. These are not a representative sample of Contabo Nextcloud deployments. None of the material reviewed measured performance or uptime for this setup, with the plan, location, workload, and measurement period disclosed.

A useful test is to run your own workload on a trial or small plan, measure sync times and page load under realistic use, and compare the results with the recommended specifications above.

A common question in Nextcloud community discussions shows the decision readers are weighing. One post, dated August 8, 2026, asked simply: “VPS or locally hosted?”

Use this checklist before ordering:
- Administration skill: Can someone on your side maintain a Linux server and a Nextcloud instance, including updates and troubleshooting?
- Support expectations: Are you comfortable with infrastructure support from Contabo and application help from community resources?
- Capacity: Does the plan’s CPU, memory, and storage match your users, files, and planned apps, with room to grow? The recommended specification is a starting point, not a performance guarantee.
- Backups: Do you have a second location for copies and a tested restore procedure?
- Total cost: Have you checked the location-specific price, the promotional term, the renewal cost, and any separately purchased storage?
- Hosting location and control: Contabo presents choice of server location and self-administration as part of the offer. Check that the location meets your own compliance requirements.
If most of these boxes need a “no,” a managed Nextcloud host, where the provider takes on application upkeep, is the category to compare against. A self-managed VPS like Contabo’s suits readers who want control and are prepared to do the work.
Bottom line
Contabo makes it simple to get a Nextcloud server running: a free add-on, a documented stack, and a setup tutorial. What it does not provide is a managed service. Plan for the administration, recovery, and backup work from day one, size the plan against real workloads rather than the minimum, and verify the price at checkout.
