For a live stream, start with constant bitrate (CBR) when your platform recommends it. A steadier outgoing rate is generally easier for a live platform to ingest. Variable bitrate (VBR) is often more useful when encoding a video file for on-demand viewing, because it can allocate more data to complex scenes and less to simple ones. Neither mode can compensate for an upload connection that cannot reliably carry the stream.
CBR and VBR: what changes?
Constant bitrate (CBR)
With CBR, the encoder aims to send data at a steady target rate over time. This makes the outgoing rate more predictable for a live connection. It does not mean that every moment has identical visual quality: a fast-moving or detailed scene can be harder to encode well than a static one at the same rate.
Variable bitrate (VBR)
With VBR, the encoder varies the data rate according to its quality or bitrate targets. Depending on the mode, it can spend more bits on motion or detail and fewer on simpler passages. That can use data efficiently when creating a file, but the rate is less even, which may be a poor fit for a live ingest connection with a specified target.
Bitrate mode is not a measure of connection quality. Choosing a rate in an encoder does not prove that your upload can sustain it; test the complete setup and monitor the platform’s stream-health indicators.

Which should you choose?
| Use case | Starting point | Why | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live stream to a platform | CBR, if the platform specifies it | A predictable ingest rate; Twitch, YouTube Live, and Cloudflare Stream guidance reviewed for this article favors CBR for live delivery. | Current platform requirements for codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes, and protocol, plus stable upload capacity. |
| Video-on-demand (VOD) file encoding | Consider VBR where supported and appropriate | It can vary data use with scene complexity instead of spending a fixed rate throughout. Google’s VP9 guidance specifically recommends VBR for high-motion VOD. | Delivery format, file-size target, codec, quality target, and downstream streaming or packaging requirements. |
| One encode for recording and streaming | Use separate output settings if your encoder supports them | Live ingest constraints and recording quality or file-size goals are different. | Whether your software and hardware provide separate controls for streaming and recording. |
These are workflow-level starting points, not rules for every encoder. The mode’s behavior and available options depend on the encoder, codec, and platform. Follow the destination’s current instructions.
YouTube Live settings: a practical reference
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, as observed on October 3, 2026, lists CBR, recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency (not over 4 seconds), and advises RTMPS. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The table below gives the listed values for 60 fps; they are recommendations, not guarantees of quality or universal settings.

The figures are YouTube’s page recommendations as of October 3, 2026; guidance can change. Check YouTube’s current encoder table for your exact output before going live. YouTube also advises testing the stream before starting it.
Other platforms
- Twitch: Its current broadcasting guidance says to use CBR whenever possible. It warns that an excessive bitrate can use too much available upload bandwidth and cause buffering or disconnections; increasing bitrate improves quality only up to a point. Use its current recommended settings for your target resolution and frame rate rather than copying an old third-party preset.
- Cloudflare Stream: Its live documentation likewise recommends CBR when possible for a stable streaming experience. It describes creator streams as typically well under 12 Mbps; that is general context from Cloudflare, not a universal bitrate cap.
Set up and test a live stream
- Identify the output: decide whether you are sending a live stream or encoding a VOD file. The appropriate rate-control choice can differ.
- Check the destination’s current encoder guidance: confirm the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and protocol for your intended stream.
- Choose the platform’s specified rate-control mode: use CBR for live delivery when the destination recommends it. Do not assume a VOD preset is suitable for live ingest.
- Check upload capacity: the connection must sustain the planned live bitrate with room for normal network variation. A speed-test peak is not a guarantee of a steady rate.
- Test representative content: YouTube advises testing before going live. Include movement and audio similar to the real stream, then review stream health.
- Separate recording and streaming outputs if possible: when you also record locally, use distinct controls if available so live ingest needs do not dictate your file-encoding quality or size.
Why are frames dropping or the stream disconnecting?
OBS guidance treats dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as signs of a network problem between the computer and remote ingest server. CBR versus VBR alone does not diagnose or fix that path.

- Bitrate exceeds reliable upload capacity: reduce the target to a rate the connection can sustain, following the platform’s guidance for the selected output.
- Wireless instability: OBS recommends testing on another platform and using a wired connection. Ethernet can remove one source of instability, but it cannot guarantee a particular bitrate or resolve every ISP, router, or ingest issue.
- Platform or ingest warnings: watch the platform’s stream-health indicators during a test. Investigate the connection between encoder and ingest if warnings persist, rather than assuming a different rate-control mode is the answer.
