Connect your Vonage phone adapter to the router with an Ethernet cable—not through Wi-Fi. Plug the adapter’s Internet port into an open LAN port on the router, power the adapter, and wait for its model-specific readiness lights. Then connect your telephone to the correct Phone port.
First check the label on the adapter: the Vonage Box VDV22/VDV23 and HT802 have different port labels and startup indicators. Vonage’s adapter guide listings include both models and older devices, so follow the instructions for the model you have.
Connect a Vonage Box VDV22 or VDV23
- Find the blue Internet port on the Vonage Box and an unused LAN port on your router.
- Use the supplied Ethernet cable to connect the blue Internet port to the router’s LAN port.
- Connect the power supply to the orange Power port and plug it into an outlet.
- Wait for the Telephone LED to turn blue. A slowly blinking Telephone LED can indicate voicemail waiting.
- For one Vonage phone line, connect the telephone cord to the green Phone 1 port. Pick up the handset and check for a dial tone. Phone 2 is for an additional Vonage line or fax line.
These steps follow Vonage’s VDV22/VDV23 adapter instructions.

For this model, Vonage documents a port-sharing option: disconnect a device such as a computer from the router, plug that device’s Ethernet cable into the Vonage Box’s yellow Ethernet port, then connect the Box’s blue Internet port to the freed router LAN port. Keep the Internet-to-router connection in place.

Connect a Vonage HT802
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the HT802’s blue Internet port to an open LAN port on your router, router/modem, or managed switch.
- Connect the supplied power adapter to the HT802’s Micro USB 5V 1A power port and plug it in.
- Let the adapter finish starting up. Vonage says this can take several minutes. Do not disconnect power while the Internet and Phone LEDs are blinking in unison.
- Check that the Power LED is blue, then wait for the Internet LED and the active Phone LED to turn blue.
- Connect the telephone cord to Phone 1 or Phone 2, depending on which port is provisioned for your line.
Vonage’s HT802 instructions say: “Wait for the HT802 to complete the power on cycle. This may take several minutes to complete.”
If all router LAN ports are occupied
Vonage recommends expanding the available LAN ports with a router for the HT802. Follow the instructions for your network equipment when adding it.

Troubleshoot a Vonage adapter that will not connect
- Check the Ethernet connection. Make sure the cable is firmly seated in the adapter’s Internet port and a router LAN port, and confirm that the router has working internet access.
- Read the HT802 lights. A steady blue Internet LED means it is connected to the internet. An unlit Internet LED indicates the internet cable is not connected; a fast blink indicates an internet issue. A steady blue Phone LED means the line is ready to make calls.
- Check the phone and service. Confirm that your Vonage service and number are active, and that the phone is connected to the correct Phone port. A single-line VDV22/VDV23 setup uses Phone 1.
- Restart only after checking cables and internet access. For the HT802, Vonage’s restart sequence is to power off the adapter and router/modem-router, restart the modem/router and confirm internet access, then power up the adapter and wait for its startup cycle to finish. Do not unplug the HT802 while its Internet and Phone LEDs blink together.
Do you need to change router or adapter settings?
Usually, no. DHCP is the default internet connection type for the VDV22/VDV23, and Vonage says most customers do not need to change advanced settings. Static IP and PPPoE options are documented for connections that specifically require them; see Vonage’s VDV22/VDV23 advanced options.
