To use Alexa on a Samsung tablet, install the Amazon Alexa app from the tablet’s app store and sign in to your Amazon account. You do not need to register an Echo just to use the app. Linking Alexa to Samsung SmartThings is a separate, optional step for controlling compatible smart-home devices.
Choose what you mean by “connect Alexa”

How to get Alexa on your Samsung tablet
- Open the app store available on your Samsung tablet and search for the Amazon Alexa app. Amazon’s general instructions are to download and install Alexa from the mobile device app store.
- Install the app, open it, and sign in with your Amazon account.
- Complete any account verification prompts and review the permissions requested by the app. Prompts can vary by app version and what you choose to use.
- If you only want Alexa available through the tablet app, you can stop here. You do not need to follow the Echo registration flow unless you are setting up Echo hardware.
Availability and features can depend on the tablet model, Android version, country, and current app listing. The official instructions cited here do not provide a complete Galaxy Tab compatibility matrix or establish support for every tablet. Check the Amazon Alexa listing in your local app store for your specific device.
How to link Alexa with Samsung SmartThings
Use this optional setup if you want Alexa to access compatible devices connected through SmartThings. You need the Alexa app and the Samsung or SmartThings account associated with your devices.

- Open the Alexa app and complete account verification if prompted. Allow the permissions requested for the setup.
- Open Devices and find the smart-home skills area. Samsung’s U.S. guide also describes a newer route through the Message Alexa field to Smart Home Skills; labels may differ by app version.
- Search for SmartThings and enable the skill.
- Sign in to the relevant Samsung or SmartThings account and authorize access.
- Start device discovery. If prompted, authorize Location access and wait for discovery to finish. Samsung says its documented discovery process can take up to 45 seconds.
- Review the devices Alexa finds and configure the ones you want to use. If discovery does not start automatically, manually choose Add Device, select SmartThings, and run Discover Devices.
Samsung’s U.S. guide describes control of compatible lights, on/off switches, dimmer switches, thermostats, locks, and supported routines. It also says Alexa can check the status of motion and contact sensors. These are capabilities described for Samsung’s SmartThings integration, not a guarantee that every device or region supports them. See Samsung’s guide.

What to check if a smart-home device does not appear
- Confirm Alexa compatibility. Check the device maker’s instructions and product information. Amazon says products bearing the “Works with Alexa” badge are certified to work with Alexa. Amazon’s smart-home setup guidance also points users to brand-specific instructions in the Alexa Add Device flow.
- Check the Wi-Fi band for the specific device. Amazon notes that most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz bands. This is not a rule for every device, so follow its manufacturer’s requirements.
- Run discovery manually. In Alexa, choose Add Device, select SmartThings, and run device discovery if it did not begin automatically.
- Allow discovery time. Samsung’s documented SmartThings flow estimates up to 45 seconds after Location authorization; the time may vary.
These checks address device compatibility and the documented discovery flow. They do not establish a universal fix for account, network, or Samsung tablet-specific problems.
How to disconnect SmartThings from Alexa
Samsung says you can unlink Amazon Alexa in SmartThings’ linked services settings, or disable the SmartThings skill in the Alexa app. Menu names may change between app versions. Samsung’s SmartThings guide

Do not assume a Samsung tablet has Alexa built in. Samsung’s Alexa built-in instructions found here concern TVs and monitors, not tablets.
