To connect a printer to a point-of-sale (POS) system, first confirm that the exact printer model and connection method are supported by your POS app and device. Then connect it by USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or AirPrint if available, configure it in the POS app, and run a test print. The menus and compatibility rules vary by POS platform, so use its current instructions rather than assuming one setup works everywhere.
Before connecting: check compatibility
Look up the printer in the POS provider’s current compatibility list before buying or setting it up. Check the complete combination: POS app, terminal or tablet, operating system, printer model, and connection interface. A printer that works with one app or device may not be supported by another.
Also confirm any configuration the platform requires, such as a printer profile, driver, printer language, paper width, or network address. If the printer will handle more than receipts, check that the POS can route the intended jobs, such as kitchen or order tickets, to it.

Choose a connection method
| Method | How it connects | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet/LAN | Connect the printer to a router, switch, or network port; select or discover it in the POS app. | The POS and printer may need to be on the same network. Multiple POS devices may be able to share a LAN printer, depending on the platform. Square, for example, says Ethernet cannot be used with its offline payments. |
| Wi-Fi | Join the printer to the Wi-Fi network, then discover and assign it in the POS app. | Follow the printer manufacturer’s network setup instructions and confirm the POS device and printer are on the required network. |
| USB | Connect the printer to a supported POS terminal or device, then select it in the POS app. | Check the POS device’s ports and operating-system support. In Square’s documented setup, a USB printer is tied to one POS device; direct USB printer connection to iOS is unsupported, and Android may require USB OTG and USB Host-mode support. |
| Bluetooth | Pair the printer with the POS device, then select it in the POS app. | Check pairing permissions and proximity. Square advises keeping its Bluetooth printer within 10 feet, says it can connect to only one POS device at a time, and does not recommend Bluetooth because of performance issues. These are Square-specific cautions, not universal rules. |
| AirPrint | Use the POS app’s AirPrint flow to find and select a compatible printer. | Both the printer and POS integration must support AirPrint. Square’s guide gives Brother QL-1110 and Star TSP847II as examples, but verify the current compatibility list for your setup. |
These are options, not interchangeable guarantees: the POS app, printer, and device determine which methods are available. For example, Lightspeed describes a LAN setup that can be shared by multiple POS devices, while a direct USB setup may be limited to one device.

Connect and configure the printer in the POS app
- Connect the hardware. Power on the printer and connect it using the method supported by both the printer and POS device. For Ethernet or Wi-Fi, follow the printer maker’s network setup steps; for Bluetooth, pair it in the device’s Bluetooth settings if the platform requires that first.
- Open the POS printer settings. In Square, the documented path is More > Settings > Hardware > Printers. Other POS apps use different menus; consult that app’s current instructions rather than copying Square’s path.
- Add or select the printer. Depending on the app, select a discovered printer or specify its model, connection mode, USB path, or IP address. SalesPlay’s setup guide, for example, asks users to select a model and connection mode and to enter the printer’s IP address for a network connection.
- Set the printer profile and output options. Create or assign a profile if required, choose the correct model or driver, and configure the paper width, printer language, and print destinations available in the app. These settings are platform- and printer-specific.
- Save and print a test. Use the app’s test-print control where available. Confirm the output is legible, fits the paper width, and is sent to the intended printer.
Match printer language and paper settings
A printer can appear connected yet fail to produce usable output if its profile or settings do not match. StoreConnect lists ESC/POS and Star PRNT in its own POS context and advises matching character width to the paper and template; its examples include 32 or 42 characters for common 58 mm or 80 mm setups. These are not universal requirements. Use the language, driver, and width specified for your POS app and printer model.
Lightspeed’s LAN instructions recommend selecting the printer model and installing the recommended driver. Other platforms may request a printer IP address or a USB connection choice. If a field or option is missing, do not substitute a setting from another POS vendor’s instructions.

Troubleshoot a printer that will not connect or print
- No power or no connection: Check that the printer is on, the cable is firmly connected to the correct port, and the printer is ready. Replace or reseat a suspect cable if appropriate.
- Network printer not found: Confirm the printer and POS device are on the network required by the platform and that the printer is discoverable. For a network setup that uses a manual address, confirm the IP address entered in the POS app matches the printer.
- USB printer not found: Check that the POS terminal supports the connection and that the cable is connected to the appropriate port. On an applicable Android setup, verify USB OTG and USB Host-mode support; confirm the platform supports USB printing on your device.
- Bluetooth printer unavailable: Confirm Bluetooth is enabled, pairing permissions are granted, the printer is nearby, and it is not already connected to another POS device when the platform limits connections.
- Printer connects but output is wrong or missing: Review the selected printer profile, model, driver, language, paper width, and destination for the job. Then run another test print.
- Still failing: Restart the printer and POS device; for network issues, restart relevant network equipment as appropriate. Use the printer manufacturer’s model-specific reset instructions rather than assuming a generic reset sequence.
