COMSOL has been named the Official Multiphysics Partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship under a multi-year partnership announced on October 7, 2026. In practical terms, it is an engineering collaboration. Formula E engineers will use COMSOL Multiphysics, a simulation software environment, to study problems in which several physical effects interact, and COMSOL will provide software and expertise. It is not a consumer product launch, and the announcement describes neither a vehicle-team technical contract nor a sponsorship with disclosed financial terms.

What was announced, and where

COMSOL and the championship each published the news on October 7, 2026. COMSOL’s press release says the partnership was announced at COMSOL Conference 2026 Boston, where Formula E CTO Dan Cherowbrier gave a keynote on the technology and engineering shaping the future of the series. The championship’s own news item confirms the central details.

Two statements anchor the announcement. COMSOL SVP of Product Management Bjorn Sjodin said: “Formula E is a great example of why multiphysics simulation matters, as multiple phenomena are at play and constantly interact with one another. We are excited to work directly with Formula E’s technology team and put COMSOL Multiphysics to work on these kinds of real-world challenges.”

Formula E CTO Dan Cherowbrier said: “Technology is at the heart of Formula E, so partnering with COMSOL makes real sense for us and truly enhances our engineering skillsets. COMSOL gives us a powerful environment for understanding complex systems where many different physical effects are connected, but the opportunity goes beyond individual simulations. We’re particularly interested in how AI-assisted modeling, agentic workflows, and digital twins can help engineers interact with models, explore designs, and make simulation insight more accessible as we continue to push the limits of electric racing.”

Both statements are made by the partners themselves, so they describe intent rather than independent assessment of results.

What multiphysics simulation means

Multiphysics simulation models several physical effects at once and lets them influence each other inside one calculation. Most engineering tools analyze one domain at a time, such as electromagnetism, heat flow, or structural stress. In a real machine those domains are coupled.

As an illustration only, not a description of any Formula E system: in an electric motor, changing magnetic fields create torque and also losses. Those losses heat the windings. Heat changes material properties and electrical resistance, which feeds back into the magnetic and electrical behavior. Temperature and rotational speed also create mechanical stress, and coolant flow determines how much of the heat is removed. A model that handles only one of these effects can miss the interaction between them.

The announcement lists electrical, thermal, structural, electromagnetic, fluid, and battery systems as examples of interacting areas. That list is the scope the release gives for the collaboration, not a catalogue of projects already underway.

What the partnership covers

The announcement separates three different things. They have different maturity levels, and readers should not treat them as one package.

Element What the announcement says Status as announced
Software and expertise Formula E engineers will use COMSOL Multiphysics to investigate complex technical challenges involving interacting effects. COMSOL will support Formula E with software and expertise. Described as the core of the partnership. No project count or schedule is given.
Simulation apps and digital twin solutions The parties will explore these areas. Exploration only. The announcement does not say any app or digital twin has been delivered.
COMSOL Multiphysics v2027 Announced capabilities include dedicated electric motor modeling, system-level simulation, agentic modeling, and expanded access for creating simulation apps. Separate from the partnership deliverables. Planned for release later in autumn 2026. Availability of each feature is not independently established as of October 9, 2026.

The v2027 details come from the Formula E partner page, accessed October 9, 2026, and the COMSOL press release. Until COMSOL publishes the release and its feature list, treat the timing and capabilities as announced intentions.

How COMSOL’s system-level modeling would fit

COMSOL’s October 7, 2026 blog post explains that system-level representations can connect to 1D, 2D, or 3D multiphysics models. Its example is a detailed model of a motor, battery, or regenerative braking system connected to an analysis of the wider vehicle. This is explanatory vendor material. It shows how the approach is meant to work, but it does not disclose that Formula E has adopted any specific modeled subsystem.

AI-assisted modeling and digital twins

The clearest technology direction in the announcement comes from Cherowbrier’s quoted interests: AI-assisted modeling, agentic workflows, and digital twins. He framed them as ways to help engineers interact with models, explore designs, and make simulation results easier to use. These are stated interests. They are not evidence that such tools are already in use within Formula E.

GEN4 figures reported by COMSOL

The partnership is set against the GEN4 era of the championship. COMSOL’s blog reports the following figures for the GEN4 race car. They come from COMSOL, not from an independent technical specification, and they describe the car. They are not results attributed to the partnership.

Measure Figure as reported by COMSOL (October 7, 2026)
Stated maximum speed 208 mph (335 km/h)
Acceleration 124 mph (200 km/h) in 4.4 seconds
Power in ATTACK MODE 600 kW
Race mode power compared with GEN3 Evo 50% more
Base power output compared with GEN3 Evo 71% increase
Recyclability 100% recyclable or reusable, as described for the GEN4 race car
Recycled content Minimum 20% recycled materials in specified tires, batteries, chassis, and front powertrain kit

What is not yet established

  • Financial terms. The announcement discloses no partnership value.
  • Delivery schedule and scope. No number of simulation projects, deadlines, or deliverables is given.
  • Measurable outcomes. No quantified performance improvement is attributed to the agreement.
  • Existing apps or digital twins. None has been named as delivered.
  • v2027 release details. The release is planned for later in autumn 2026. Check COMSOL’s release information for the final date and feature availability before relying on them.

For most readers, the practical effect is limited. COMSOL Multiphysics is engineering simulation software, and the partnership is an announced collaboration. Its results will become visible only if Formula E or COMSOL publish specific applications, findings, or technical details.

For a basic primer on the car itself, see the championship’s own partner page, which lists the COMSOL relationship alongside current partner information.
