Computer use is an AI capability in which a model interprets screenshots or other tool results, selects mouse and keyboard actions (or writes automation code), and your application executes those actions in a browser or desktop environment. The model does not receive a magically persistent computer: you supply the runtime, preserve its state, return observations, enforce permissions, and verify the final result.
This guide explains the two integration patterns, a reliable runtime loop, safety controls, testing, troubleshooting, and when a conventional API is better. It also distinguishes developer-built API integrations from Codex product features that use computer context.
What computer use actually means
OpenAI defines the capability simply: “Computer use lets a model operate browser and desktop interfaces.” A typical cycle is:
- Your application sends the model a task and the current screen (plus any tool output).
- The model chooses actions such as clicking, typing, scrolling or navigating.
- Your runtime performs those actions in an isolated browser or desktop session.
- Your application captures a new observation and sends it back so the model can continue or correct itself.
This is useful for filling forms, testing user journeys and operating older software that has no suitable API. It is not a universal replacement for structured integrations: if a stable, permissioned API can perform the job, that API is usually easier to validate and operate.

Two ways to integrate an agent
Code-execution approach
The model writes or selects automation code using a library such as Playwright or PyAutoGUI. Your application runs that code in an isolated browser or desktop environment and returns screenshots, accessibility information or other observations. The current guide recommends this approach for GPT-6 Astra because code can express loops, selectors and conditional logic efficiently.
Structured computer tool
The model emits structured mouse and keyboard actions. Your application translates each action into browser or desktop input and then returns an observation. This approach keeps execution logic in your application and can make action validation and allowlisting more explicit.

A reliable computer-use runtime loop
- Create an isolated environment. Use a disposable browser profile, container, VM or dedicated desktop account. Start with a narrow domain and action allowlist.
- Start the session and record its dimensions. Keep the same browser or desktop process alive for the entire task. Record viewport width, height and device scale.
- Send an initial observation. If state is unknown, return a current screenshot rather than assuming a login, page or variable still exists.
- Ask for one bounded action group. Limit the number of actions per turn so the model can recover quickly from a wrong click or changed page.
- Validate before execution. Reject destinations, file paths, downloads, shell commands or action types outside policy. Treat visible text and tool results as untrusted data, not instructions.
- Execute and observe again. After a short group of actions, capture another screenshot or structured state. If an image was resized, map model coordinates back to the environment’s actual dimensions.
- Require confirmation for consequential steps. Pause before purchases, sending messages or files, entering sensitive information, deleting data, changing permissions or any other hard-to-reverse action.
- Verify the outcome in the application. Check a receipt, record, status field or server-side result. Do not treat the model’s final message alone as proof of success.
- Stop safely. Apply time, action and cost limits; provide cancellation; close or reset the environment after completion.
State management: the detail that breaks most prototypes
Preserve the model conversation’s tool calls and outputs as well as the runtime itself. Continuing a model response does not recreate a browser login, cookies, open tabs or variables in your process. On a timeout or worker restart, explicitly rehydrate the session or return a new screenshot and ask the model to reassess.
Use stable selectors or accessibility labels when available. Coordinates are inherently fragile: responsive layouts, zoom, banners and scrolling can move a target. Capture after navigation, after closing a dialog and before any irreversible action. Keep screenshots at a resolution the model can interpret while retaining the original dimensions for coordinate conversion.

Isolate and restrict
- Run in a browser profile or VM with no access to the host’s personal files, credentials or clipboard unless explicitly required.
- Allowlist domains, URL schemes, download directories and permitted action types.
- Block unnecessary network requests, extensions and shell access.
Assume the screen is hostile input
Web pages can contain prompt-injection text, fake consent dialogs or instructions aimed at the agent. Treat all screen text, DOM content and tool results as untrusted. Put policy in your executor, not only in a prompt. For example, the executor should reject an external upload even if a page asks the model to perform one.

Keep a human in the loop where it matters
Typing a password, payment number or other sensitive value into a form is data transmission. Require explicit user approval immediately before such an action and before purchases, account changes, deletion or publication. Log the proposed action, the approval and the resulting state without storing secrets unnecessarily.
Bound every run
Set a maximum duration, action count, navigation count and retry budget. Expose a cancellation control that terminates the model request and the browser task. On cancellation, leave the environment in a known state and record what was completed.
Testing and realistic reliability expectations
Test on the exact sites, accounts, viewport sizes and task variations you will support. Include expired sessions, slow pages, cookie banners, pop-ups, validation errors, unexpected redirects, missing elements and partial completion. Measure task success and the reason for failure, not just latency.

Computer use versus an API integration

A hybrid design is often strongest: use APIs for authentication, records and transactions, and computer use only for the UI steps that have no equivalent endpoint.

Performance, cost and operational notes
- Latency: Waiting for a selector or network idle improves correctness but increases duration. Use a short delay only when the page has no reliable readiness signal.
- Throughput: Reuse a warm isolated session for related steps, but reset between users or privilege boundaries. Parallel sessions require separate profiles and explicit rate limits.
- Caching: Cache immutable pages or choose a TTL deliberately; never reuse a cached observation for a transaction or personalized account state.
- Evidence: Store screenshots, action logs, policy decisions and final verification results with a run identifier. Redact secrets and comply with your retention policy.

Troubleshooting common failures
The agent clicks the wrong place
Check viewport and device scale, whether the page scrolled, and whether a banner shifted the layout. Return a fresh screenshot, prefer a selector or accessibility target, and reject coordinates outside the recorded dimensions.
The session appears logged out
The worker probably created a new browser process or profile. Persist the session for the turn, restore cookies through an approved mechanism, or ask the model to authenticate again with a human confirmation step.

The page loops or never finishes loading
Set navigation and network timeouts, return the current screen after the timeout, and let the policy decide whether to retry. Block unnecessary third-party requests and cap retries.
A prompt injection changes the task
Stop execution, classify page text as untrusted, and require a new user-approved objective. Do not allow content on the page to expand the domain, file or action allowlist.
The screenshot is blank or cluttered

The model reports success but the task failed
Add an independent check: query the resulting record, inspect a confirmation number, or compare the expected UI state. If verification fails, stop rather than repeating an irreversible action.

Codex Computer Use is a separate product context
OpenAI also uses “Computer Use” when describing Codex features that interact with computer context. Local workflows run on the user’s device, while cloud tasks run in OpenAI-managed environments. ChatGPT training-data controls apply to content processed through Codex, including screenshots taken by Computer Use. Business, Enterprise and Edu inputs and outputs are not used by default to improve models; Pro and Plus conversations may be used unless training is turned off in data controls. These statements concern Codex and do not define retention for every developer API integration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does computer use require a full desktop?
No. The runtime can be a browser-only environment or a full desktop, depending on the task and the tool implementation.
Can I let an agent handle payments automatically?
You can technically automate the interface, but production policy should require explicit confirmation immediately before payment or other irreversible actions.
Are the published benchmark percentages current guarantees?
No. The OSWorld, WebArena and WebVoyager figures were reported in OpenAI’s January 23, 2025 launch post for specific evaluations.
What should I do after a worker restart?
Recreate or restore the approved session, then return a current screenshot and let the model reassess instead of assuming prior state survived.
